Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

I did not read book one in the series, but I don't feel like I'm missing any important information that would make this one easier to read. (Although I'm sure I'd have a better understanding of the main characters off the bat). This was a dark thriller with religious fanatics and horrifying murders that kept me turning pages for hours. The characters were fairly fleshed out, and I'll definitely be putting book one on my TBR list.

This is the first book I have read from this author.

similarly, incidents are detected in other areas of the country and these murders are detailed in such a manner that they seem real. Intriguing and interesting story.

I haven't read the first in the series, Absinthe, but certainly will now.

Great detective series aet in Amsterdam. While part of a series, it stands alone. Loved it.

I haven't read Absinthe and there were moments when I felt that I have missed some connections to the first title in the series. The style of writing is simple and clever. More than the details of the crime and the search for the perpetrators, I enjoyed the description of the bureaucratic aspects of the collaboration between the dutch and Belgian police work as well as the cultural aspects portrayed. Having lived both in the Netherlands and in Belgium, I found these details endearing and ironic.

Once again we follow Walter Eekhaut in his new position in Amsterdam where he is trying to settle in with his new colleagues. This time the story covers big parts of the world and also history. I must say I really like this series and must strongly recommend it. I have to thank #Netgalley and #SkyhorsePublishing for letting me read #Purgatory by #GuidoEekhaut

Purgatory is a smart and engrossing detective thriller. Guido Eekhaut has written another page turner.
