This is a murder mystery told from different points of view. It is a dark story about betrayal and abuse. It divulges how easy it is for a charismatic person to get people to do his bidding in belief of his higher cause. Who is the baby? How did the people in the mansion die and where did the children go? This 25 -year-old-mystery is now resurfacing. 25 years have passed and the baby has returned to the mansion where she was found among the dead. She has no idea of who she really is and how this mansion has become hers. Follow the journalist as he discovers what really happened that night and where the children had gone. You will experience sadness, anger, and revolution as the story unfolds. I was given a free copy of this book and am voluntarily writing my review.

I used to love Lisa Jewell but for her last few novels I feel like I enjoy one storyline and the other threads are just a mess. The skipping around and the random murder of an ex spouse took away from what would have been a really fun story if it had be told in more linear way. I understand that’s the trend now but I don’t think it best serves every book or story.

I have LOVED every one of Jewell's books, but this one did not strike a cord with me. I liked the premise but the book was ALL OVER the place. Too many characters, too many threads to follow with only a clunky attempt to stitch them together at the end.
I will check out Jewell's next book, though. Everyone has an off day now and then.

I’ve recently discovered Lisa Jewell, and she is very quickly becoming one of my go-to authors. I had high expectations of The Family Upstairs, and it did not disappoint! I loved the alternating perspectives, and I felt like every chapter ended on a cliffhanger that kept me reading long past my bedtime. The characters were incredibly interesting, each with a very different voice and I couldn’t decide which character I was most drawn to. The story of the past was fascinating and I found myself rereading pages just to make sure I grasped it all and because I found it so interesting and disturbing. This may be my favourite Lisa Jewell book yet, and I highly recommend The Family Upstairs to fans of character-driven, atmospheric thrillers with plenty of twists and turns.

I believe that this author just gets better. Creepy story that all came together in the end. I loved guessing and getting it wrong. Just very well written.

This was my favorite Lisa Jewell book yet! Told from multiple perspectives, this books weaves past and future to tell the story of an old house in Chelsea. I thought Jewell did a great job keeping this book twisty and interesting without feeling unrealistic or overly exaggerated. I flew the book in two days, picking it up any time that I had a spare minute. I definitely can't wait to see what else she has in store

This was a good one! So original and kept me interested the whole way. There are a few different points of view, which together start to reveal the whole story. The book will have you trying to guess what is really going on, because you know there has to be something more than what they first tell you.

I was so excited when I got an email from the publisher to read this book, based on one of my other reviews of one of the authors'. While I did not like the storyline as much as the others, it was still very well written, with a strong attention to detail. I could imagine myself being in the setting along with the characters, which is sometimes extremely hard to do when telling this sort of story. Would recommend -- a great summertime read for someone who enjoys darker tales.

3 Stars.

Creepy and Disturbing. Par for the Course with Lisa Jewell, Right?!

The Past: Houseguests. They are never pleasant. Unless they are temporary. For a family living in a mansion in Chelsea, a ringing of the doorbell signals a whole host of changes that influences their entire lives, forever. Call it dark, eerie and downright strange.

The Present: On Libby Jones’ twenty-fifth birthday, she inherits a house. Not just any house, a mansion in Chelsea. Though dilapidated and vacant, it is a total windfall for someone like Libby who has always lived paycheck to paycheck. When she visits her new “home” she discovers something frightening and begins digging into its history. What she finds is unlike anything she ever imagined.

Lisa Jewell’s “The Family Upstairs” is a novel told in different timelines, containing lots of characters to keep track of. Once you get going, the storyline flows and you become enmeshed in the mystery of the mansion and the ominous feeling of the story. While this wasn’t my favorite of Ms. Jewell’s novels simply because I felt like it was lacking something, it was a super quick read, which I tore through in a just a few hours.

Another buddy read with Kaceey!

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have never read any other books by this author, and after reading this, not sure why! This book kept me interested from beginning to end with plot twists and turns and interesting characters. Will have to go back and read her other works.

Not quite as good as Watching You and the thriller aspect is missing but it's still creepy. What made the Lambs give in to the intruders in the family as they did? Was there some plot at the start between Birdie and David, before they all moved in? Neither question is answered, which doesn't necessarily matter at the end. Moving back in time to some unknown POV (revealed at the end) and forward to Libby's discovery that she has inherited a house with A Past and her trying to unravel that past, this can get a little confusing at times. There's a definite twist regarding some of the relationships in the house and what that means for the present, but the rest is pretty standard.

I loved this book! So many twists and turns, a great page-turner. And how great that so many of the characters were likeable, which lately seems very rare in this sort of book. The concept was different than anything I have read. And I still can't decide how creeper out to be about the ending!

Heard about this one at BookExpo and knew I had to get my hands on it.

Another great Lisa Jewell book! This one is one part Flowers in the Attic and four parts...WHAT!!!
A great dysfunctional family story with twists and turns and utter weirdness.
Going to be a great book to pick up this fall and tuck in with on a cold night.

I truly found this book a fabulous read. Too often mysteries focus on simply solving a problem, but Jewell presents the reader with a mystery and then fleshes out the characters involved in this very touching story.

As a reader, I could not put down the book until the entire story was revealed. Though the central theme might seem unlikely, we have seen endless stories of children victimized by cult-like leaders.

Each character was developed and some totally sympathetic, others evil, but all fascinating. I found myself thinking of this book long after I had finished reading this.

I highly recommend this to people who love a really well written mystery. Jewell has done an outstanding job. Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review this fine mystery.

hmm. i'm sort of disappointed because i love this author a lot, and her mind, the last book she released floored me, while this one... okay hang on. look, i read the first 92% of this book in one sitting and then it just became dull. i didn't expect something so well written and exciting, something i needed to figure out would end up where it did. it almost felt silly in a way. the twists she write always catch me off guard and shock me but the big reveals in this felt small, not that big a deal at all. i so badly wanted to know the history of these children and what they faced, the horrors the adults threw upon them, but so much almost felt unanswered? i'd have loved to have known more from the adults perspectives, understood exactly the spell upon them to do the things they did. perhaps simple manipulation and brainwashing, some jonestown stuff. i'll still keep reading her books but this one really left me feeling lackluster by the ending.

Libby Jones became an orphan at 6 months old. Now, at 25, she learns she has just inherited a house through a trust. She is now on a mission to uncover the story of her birth parents. In London, childhood friends Lucy and Clemency are headed to the very same house to discover secrets of their own. Jewell's latest novel will keep readers on their toes until the very end!

This is by far my favorite psychological thriller by Lisa Jewell. I adored how she was able to weave three voices and storylines so seamlessly together as each drifted from past to present. It was a darker novel that focused on childhood abuse and how that trauma continues into adulthood. But the story also included resilience and healing too. Overall, my interest was kept to the very end -- with a killer last few lines (pun?).

I read “Then She Was Gone” and absolutely loved it and was very excited about reading this book! While it was an overall good read with some great twists and turns, I had some difficulty in the beginning keeping track of all of the characters as the story switched back and forth from different view points. I would call it more of a family drama than a thriller but still worth reading.
