Georgina is a fabulous character full of determination. She starts off in a terrible job with an awful boyfriend but quickly looses those through some humorous twists and turns. I loved this story because she grew so much from start to end and overcame trauma to move forward. A beautiful story that had comedic and cringe worthy scenes.

This book was not what I had expected going in, but I loved what it turned out to be! This was an amazing story and I loved reading about Georgina and seeing inside of her head. She was complex and a very thought out character and she seemed like she could be a real person. I definitely recommend this one!!

I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Sweet love story full of losses and redemption. It would make a great romcom film.

I wanted to love this book but it wasn’t for me. The sarcastic tone was fun at first, but felt forced after a while. It pulled me from the setting too often and distracted from the characters and plot.

Ahhhhhh where to begin? This book is five stars and more, easily one of my favorite rom-coms of the year. Heart-warming, sweet, fun, and perfectly written. I have been waiting to read this book ever since I laid eyes on the description, and the wait 100% paid off. Let me start by whispering a suggestion to you…could this be the modern-day riff on Jane Austen’s Persuasion that we’ve all been looking for? I’ll leave that up to you, dear reader.
I absolutely adored the characters in this book, particularly the main character, Georgina Horspool. She’s a warm, big-hearted, quirky, weird, mess of a thirty-year-old woman who is perfectly happy with her series of waitressing and bartending jobs and her gaggle of three insane friends. Instead of saying she’s in a very slow motion tailspin, her sister tells her, “You’re more like a Roomba, Gog, bumping into walls, pinging back and carrying on.” Take one of my favorite Georgina quotes, an observation about her high-strung sister:
“Inside, Esther is fond of the sort of uplifting wall art that says things like LIVE LOVE LAUGH. It’s weird, because she’s the world’s least whimsical person. It always has a whiff of the ‘floggings will continue until morale improves’ to me. I might get her one saying LAUGH DAMN YOU.”
The book essentially opens with her getting fired from her waitressing job at the worst restaurant in town, then going to her boyfriend’s apartment to find him sleeping with another woman. In a last minute coup de grace, Georgina’s brother-in-law gets her a gig bartending at a bar owned by two brothers, one of whom is Georgina’s sweet, shy, loner sixth form boyfriend. He’s a stunning, brooding, tall drink of water now, but - he doesn’t remember her.
Flash to her gaslighting, borderline stalker boyfriend following her around town and trying to ruin her life, antics with her friends, a pitiful get-your-life-together intervention from her mom’s awful new husband, and more. Think Bridget Jones’ Diary-esque antics, but she’s a bit more together than Bridget Jones, the conflicts in this book are real and infuriating, and the romance has a different Austenesque spin.
Georgina is an amazing protagonist who you root for every time - she’s strong and resilient, and most importantly: she stands up for herself. There are many moments in this book that will anger you, but an equal number of moments where you will fist-pump and say, “Fuck yeah, George!” The book is primarily about her development as a character and an individual, with the romance acting as a heavy side dish.
This was my first read from Mhairi MacFarlane and if this is how all of her books read, it certainly won’t be my last. I’m slightly upset with myself for devouring this so quickly. Big thanks to Harper Collins and NetGalley for an early copy of the book before its US release in September 2019!

Thank you to NetGalley, Mhairi McFarlane and HarperCollins for an Arc of don't you forget about me. First this cover is adorable and I already knew I would love this book just by looking at it and second I am a huge Mhairi McFarlane fan and her books never disappoint.
Georgina is down in her luck. The same day she gets fired from the restaurant she works at she also comes home to find her boyfriend in bed with someone else. She gets a job as a barmaid in a newly opened pub that turns out to be run by the boy she fell in love with back at school. She's sees Lucas has really grown up now owning his own business and he has a dog. Seeing him after all of these years brings up a secret from her past that happened on the last day of school. A secret that has chased her all of these years...
This book is both a second chance romance and about a girl fighting for herself and discovering who she really is. She has had a hard time since school and has let it all drag her down and she is not on the path she wants to be on but with the help of her amazing friends she starts to pick up the pieces. I loved this book because of the romance but also because Georgie is a strong woman who picks herself back up. Highly recommend this one.

For the longest time, I avoided romance books like this one- "contemporary" romance- especially ones that star slightly older women reminiscing about relationships in high school. This theme comes up so often and feels so overdone, that I thought it just wouldn't be that interesting to read about. Getting past the "I won't like this"-- I've read through a few books in this genre lately... and am having such a great time with it!
"Don't You Forget About Me" felt like a good dream. One of those books that when you finish reading, you can't help but think back to your own awful... and maybe at times good high school memories ;). The characters were fun, the banter was witty, and the writing was amazing! For the first time in probably ever, I found myself bookmarking pages with insightful comments that felt really on-point about life and relationships. 7 bookmarks people! Coming from someone who never bookmarks kindle or fiction books! This book is on my "to purchase" list when it is published :).
I had never heard of Mhairi McFarlane before this book, but I currently have two tabs open for her on my browser. One at Goodreads checking out her stuff, and one at Amazon so I can get started reading more from her quickly. Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins Publishers for providing me with an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.

Georgina has had a string of jobs that often end in disaster, or at least in unemployment. Somehow, she finds herself in situations where she is blamed for things that aren't really her fault. She is offered a job that seems like a perfect fit only to find that she has history with the co-owner of the bar. She is relieved to find that he doesn't remember their long-ago relationship - or does he? McFarlane weaves together a story that makes us care about Georgina and her travails and is truly laugh out loud funny. I'll be looking for more books by McFarlane!

This book was so much more than I originally thought it would be. It was about first loves, tragedy and grief, friendship, self-esteem, and finding happiness in this crazy world.

Don't You Forget About Me is more chicklit than romance in my opinion. Georgian is seriously unlucky and down at an age when she should be building her life up. Some things do start to turn her way and maybe begin turning her luck around. I like the characterization of Georgian as a person with some growing up to do, even though she's in that thirtyish should already be grown place in her life. It's taken her longer than average to figure out her life, but she is making progress toward positive change. I wasn't interested in the romance aspect of the story. I found her individual story more compelling because so many of us have made bad decisions and ended up nowhere. Georgian is proof that no-one is hopeless, but you have to do the work. She's an inspiring character with charm and wit. I enjoyed this story and hope others will as well. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fresh, funny, and delightfully feminist take on romance, and I loved every moment of it. I found myself chuckling out loud and getting teary-eyed as Georgina falls in love with herself as much as with the love interest

Loved Mhairi McFarlane's Don't You Forget About Me! This story is a romantic comedy with a heart and a soul. I loved all of the characters and really cared about them, especially Georgina and Lucas. Wonderful and swoony!

I laughed at the beginning and applauded when Gina found her voice during her Shame speeches. She found her self worth and in return became a person worthy of love. A great book about finding your other half that makes you better.

Don't You Forget About Me was my first book by Mhairi McFarlane, and I'm so excited to add her to my list of must-buy authors! This book was so funny and full of British witticisms that made the pages fly. It took a bit to get the story going, but once the plot was set-up I couldn't stop reading. Georgina gets fired from her waitressing job and finds her boyfriend in bed with another woman all in the same night. She takes the first job she can find, which is bartending at a new pub that just so happens to be owned by her high school boyfriend. Even though she and Lucas seemed meant to be, they broke up inexplicably and never spoke again. Things are super awkward working with him in the pub, but Georgina persists while simultaneously battling the unwanted advances of her cheating ex. She also deals with unresolved family issues with her parents and sister. I couldn't stop reading until I found out how things would resolve with Georgina and Lucas--what exactly happened in high school to keep them apart? Don't You Forget About Me is full of humor and is a pleasure to read, but it's so much more than a rom-com. It tackles some weighty topics like toxic masculinity, gaslighting, and feminism. Huge thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for the preview copy!

Excellent second-chance romance that had me laughing and crying and fully identifying with Georgina and her quest for acceptance and love. Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the DRC in exchange for an honest review.

This book went from making you laugh out loud, to crying in one sitting! I love a good book that makes me feel different emotions. Its like you escape for a little bit. Sometimes you just need a good cry!

Lemme tell you my story before you throw stones.
This is a fun story but it's not what I would categorize as a romance. It's chick lit. Chick lit that reminds me a lot of Bridget Jones's Diary only Georgina is probably wiser than Bridget.
They both get into wacky situations regularly, they're both British and they both have a core circle of friends that stick by them through thick and thin.
I actually really like Georgina and empathized with her familial trials and tribulations. She's a generous friend, kind to others, loyal and has a hard time with conflict which has landed her in some unpleasant situations and taken a bit of a toll on her psyche.
Her humor is VERY British and sometimes that misses the mark for me but here it was mostly a win. Had I gone into this expecting a modernized version of Bridget Jones's Diary in all likelihood I would be singing its praises right now.
But... I was expecting a romance and the guy who "forgets" her from high school and she have no relationship development. At all.
There's actually more relationship info/development between Georgina and her ex who is... a special one.
He was not boring nor was this story and on those two fronts, I will give credit where credit is due. But at the end of the day it just didn't meet my squishy marshmallow expectations and I found that frustrating. The premise of first loves reuniting is what caught my attention, plus the title, but the focus was not on them reconnecting. Rather that took a secondary role to Georgina coming into herself which is fine but not what drew me to the book in the first place. However, my opinions are my own and YMMV.
I'm somewhere between 2-3 Stars but will round up because it held my attention consistently.

Sweet, funny, and modern! Mhairi McFarlane hits the nail on the head with this one! It's compulsively readable, dynamic, and an all around FUN read. I have had many readers recommend her books to be before and this is the first time I have sat down and read her work! I am impressed. I cannot wait to read more of her novels in the near (like, very near) future!

Having heard such high praise about this author and being smitten with the description, I wonder if this was a case of setting myself unrealistic expectations. While I very much enjoyed the writing style and was captivated by the protagonist, this book actually seemed very light on the actual romance. I’d borrow another book by her from my library, though.

Contemporary romance in line with "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Good In Bed." Prior to this book, I hadn't ready anything by this author, but the premise and title hooked me. It's a second-chance romance between Georgina and Lucas, but it evolves into much more of a finding yourself story. I enjoyed Georgina's process of becoming a fully evolved adult, but there were points in the novel that dragged on a bit. I was a little concerned because the happy ending I was hoping for wasn't materializing, and I was 98% finished with the book. I'm hoping that a series about Georgina's best friends follows, because I'd like to see more of Georgina and Lucas.
While the writing was sharp and witty, there were several words that I assume are British slang that I couldn't define using context clues, so that was a bit jarring. Other non-British readers might have similar problems.
