I really wanted to like this book. It's about dogs! The author's love for dogs is very palpable, and I love that. There are also some interesting tidbits about our relationships with dogs throughout history -- from loving them for their doggy-ness to our attempts to domesticate them and thereby also reduce their doggy-ness. There are some troubling bits, like how our attempts to breed dogs for certain characteristics comes at a detriment to the species. So there were interesting parts that I really wanted to latch on to, and to follow the narrative thread.

But overall, the book felt very meandering. Horowitz dips into one topic after another, without much of a narrative flow.

Still, her love for dogs comes through very well. I enjoyed her anecdotes about dogs -- her own and those she encounters -- and I think I'd love chatting with her over a coffee or something about how amazing dogs are.

But I couldn't get into this book. DNF at 52%.
