This book was a roller coaster of emotions that ranged from heartbreak to hope, fear to anger. You can't help but root for Drew the whole way through and hope that she will one day get her happily ever after.

Well written thriller, told in a good pace.

Interesting, creepy, dark, good characters, well developed storyline.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of the book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Absolutely gripping storyline, had me hooked from the start. A bit darker in places than I expected but full of surprises and gritty to boot.

This truly had the potential to be a dark, creepy, engrossing read. It just needed more detail and grit. Still worth reading, I believe.

Did not finish - I could not connect with the plot or writing so I decided to put it down.

Drew, a survivor of domestic violence, and her 10 year-old son, Michael, have been on the run for almost a decade. Understandably, Drew is suffering from the mental toll of it all and has kept her son in the dark about his father and his early life. But then they move to a new town where Drew is trying to seek out answers. And both Michael and Drew begin to form meaningful, healthy relationships. Unfortunately, though, there is a price that will need to be paid for the hope of happiness and closure of the past.
This books falls firmly in the "psychological thriller" genre and has almost all the elements I desire for this type of work of fiction. It was a page-turner, but I also felt squeamish at points because of the descriptions surrounding abuse. Therefore, I would caution domestic abuse survivors about reading this book. It's sickening to me that although this was fiction, there are people out there that actually abuse their partners in ways described here. It's so dark.
Actually, the only part of this book I didn't care for was the ending. It wasn't satisfying enough for me, based on the drama leading up to the end. It almost would have been better if the author had ended the book sooner and left out the follow-up details.
Overall, I do recommend this book to those who enjoy dark, psychological thrillers, and I will be looking forward to rereading it again at some point down the road.

This book was okay. It took a lot for me to finish it and it was only so I could move on to my next book. Some parts of the book were good and looked promising but it just didn’t work out.

TW - domestic violence, physical abuse, miscarriages
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, very dark and twisty. Another great psychological thriller that shows just how far a mother will go for her child.
My only issue was that I didn't connect with any of the characters, however, I feel the story itself made up for it.
I flew through this book and just couldn't put it down.

Once again, thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

This was such a good psychological thriller. I was hooked from the beginning and just had to find out what would happen next.

I know some books suffer from bad timing and that may be the case here. I know others have loved it so if it looks like something you'd like, give it a try. I just wish I'd loved it more.

First, I felt it was a bit...messy. The beginning is confusing - with 3 POV and no evident link tying them together other than mother/son and someone else. It's violent and gruesome right off, pointing out slit throats and a very jumpy mother. Obvious signs of hiding from the father.

I was also not a fan of having the son's POV. Although I understand the point and reasoning in adding in this perspective, it just pushed me out of the story and I wasn't a fan. Meh, this one just wasn't for me.

This was a fast paced and exciting read with a lot of twists and turns. I definitely recommend it for people who enjoy suspense.

For nine years, Drew Baker has been running from her brutal husband and the dark deeds of the night she left him. Focused on protecting her ten-year-old son, Drew reluctantly settles into a small town, eager to find proof of her husband’s true nature so she can stop looking over her shoulder.

But Drew is also on the run from her own terrible crimes—ones that mean prison and separation from her son should the police catch up to her before her husband does. If only she could remember that night and what really transpired…

Without warning, the unthinkable happens, and Drew is plunged into the most nightmarish situation a woman and mother could imagine. Desperate to save her child, Drew takes matters into her own hands, proving that anyone is capable of darkness, and nowhere is safe for those who fear themselves.

The story was ok, as were the characters. This took me a while to read because I couldn't quite get into it.

This was a good book, the only thing that knocked a star off for me was the pace of it. It was slow for a while but once you get to the middle it picks up and turns out to be a really good story.

A little overdone/cliche but all in all a good read. I enjoyed even though it felt like I’d read this 100x before. I do look forward to reading more by this author because their writing is great.

I had high expectations for this thriller. A mother on the run doing what ever it takes to protect her child. A sadistic husband who is good at hiding his darkness from the world. However I felt like this story was lacking in character development.

This story is told from multiple point of views, the mother Drew, her 10 year old son Michael and from the babysitter.
Even though it was mostly told from Drew’s perspective I couldn’t quite get fully invested in her character.
While Michaels chapters were short they were definitely creepy.
I think I would have liked to read from the husband point of view I think that would have made things more interesting.

I keep dancing between 2 and 3 stars. It's not bad, but it's not for me.

This is somewhat of an overdone storyline, or rather cliché, if you will. I'm starting to think the cover lured me in, because had I really taken a second look at the synopsis, I probably would have changed my mind. That's not to say that the book is written poorly, or that it's even a bad book, but that maybe my expectations were different with this one.

Drew is on the run... from? You've guessed it, an abusive husband. See where I'm going with this? At this point, I'm already thinking, you better hit me with something "in your face" crazy, because there better be something that sets this apart. Well folks, I kept waiting... and waiting... and reading... and waiting... FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN. We were given Catherine, a "crazy" nanny, which I thought, okay, this could turn into something... but NO! It only ended in disappointment.

I want to thank NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and J.M. Winchester for allowing me the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for my review.
