Hard to believe that Beverly Cleary, famous for Beezes and Ramona is over 100 years old. She is currently 103,to be precise. And her first book, Henry Huggins, was published in 1950. I well remember reading her books when I was in elementary school, and even back in the 1960s, they were of a time long ago.

This picture book gives a brief biography of Cleary as a child, and what influenced her stories. And I like that it points out that the most successful books are written by the authors to tell stories that they wanted to read when they were kids.

Highly recommended as a good intro to this most famous author. Children who enjoy her stories will enjoy learning how she became the author that she is.

As a child, Beverly Cleary’s books were a huge influence on me as I grew up wishing for a sister like Beezus and to have adventures like Ramona. When I saw that this book was the story of Cleary’s life (so far! She is 103 years old!) I was interested for nostalgia’s sake. What I didn’t expect was that the book would have such a wonderful message! The message that you can’t succeed if you never try is a universal message that we all need to hear. The story is told in a simple manner making it a great introduction to her life, but what I also enjoyed was that a more straightforward biography is included as well as a timeline. These resources would make this an excellent choice for a student wishing do do a report on Beverly Cleary or for a class to study her as an author. I would also recommend this to anyone who has read the books or who is currently reading them as a way to understand her characters. Furthermore, I would recommend this book for almost any child who is struggling with reading/writing, has feared failure, or just needs some encouragement.

This informative picture book tells about how Beverly Cleary drew on her childhood experiences, her work as a children’s librarian, and her experience as a parent when writing her well-known children’s books. Always searching for interesting books, she grew up to write the books children would love. Many adults—her mother, her teachers, her husband—supported her efforts. Illustrations bring this story to life, showing Beverly’s life as.a child, a young adult and a mature writer. Back matter explains her her career developed and grew. The only missing piece is a few excerpts from her writing to show her delicious mix of humor and realistic fiction.

When I was a child, one of the first chapter books that I loved was called Ellen Tebbits. Years later, I introduced my children to Ramona and Beezus. Then, more recently I read about Beverly Cleary's 100th birthday. Clearly, she [s known to me as a beloved children's author.

This book, that is illustrated with humor and a sense of nostalgia, tells the story of Beverly. She was a child with a vivid imagination who, at first, did not like school. Having a teacher who took a special interest in her helped to change this as did having a seventh grade teacher who encouraged her to use her imagination.

Beverly Cleary went on to become a children's author who wrote stories based on her experiences and her sense of the kinds of books that children want to read. She started with Sparerib (Ribsy) and Henry and progressed from there.

This book includes the illustrated biography along with more detailed information at the end of the book. Young readers and author hopefuls will enjoy this story as will those who have read books by the talented Ms. Cleary.

You are never too young to try. While also teaching young readers about Beverly Cleary, this book also encourages forming and following dreams. If your child has not read any Beverly Cleary books, this is a great jumping off point that can be followed by her own writing. The author has also included resources with more information in the back of the book for older readers.
