The second novel in the Evermore Chronicles, Into the Hourglass, keeps up the pacing and the momentum, delivering a non-stop adventure that pushes Everly to her limits.

Story Development
This novel has been sitting in my digital library for over two years. After such a length of time, I admit I was a bit worried about whether or not I would remember the first novel’s events. Then, of course, I read this novel’s blurb, which reminded me of bits and pieces. However, what was remarkable was King’s writing and how she could recap everything that happened in the previous novel expertly.

The way that King begins the story takes place almost immediately after the first novel’s events. Everly and her friends are on a ship they are looking for dorka this way whale that can transport them to the world beneath the waves. So it is a scene reminiscent of Disney’s Pinocchio where they get swallowed by the whale, and I didn’t hate that I did like that little touch of nostalgia for me. I don’t know if that was the author’s intent to mirror that thing, but it worked very well for the storytelling.

But here, King recapped the events from the first novel by inserting the emotional ramifications of everything that happened into the character dynamics, the dialogue, and the internal narrative. By doing that, King ensures that the story keeps up that fast momentum.

It was excellent to see King bring back events from the first novel as memories throughout the narrative. There are mentions here and there versus being unloaded on the reader all at once. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. I hate when authors decide to recap in one giant paragraph because it dampens the story’s pacing. Here King avoids that; instead, they focus more on the effects, the emotional effects, and the way character dynamics have shifted. King does everything to ensure that the momentum of the storytelling does not falter. King’s storytelling works so well because it does not stop; it moves like “bam bam bam bam,” capturing the adventure within the story, capturing the rising tension and stakes while pushing Everly to her limits, forcing her to discover so much about herself.

Characterization
As for the characterization, I think Into the Hourglass focuses a lot on the characters as it develops the action and adventure. Everly has gone through so much. When she was a child, her family was murdered. She was stabbed through the heart, left for dead, and the only way to save her was for her uncle to team up with Father Time to build her a clockwork heart. So growing up in a society that shuns and distrusts magic, Everly had to keep to herself. Her uncle raised her that way so that she would be protected. However, that means she doesn’t allow people in, making her life a lonely one.

So throughout this adventure, Everly is learning how to trust. It is not until the end that she sees that the people she has been on this grand adventure with are her friends and worthy of her trust. Everly faces many twists and turns, forcing her to learn more of her history and the history of her parents, uncle, and even Prince Killian.

There is also a nice juxtaposition between Everly and Killian. Seeing a man such as Killian, immortal, all flesh and blood be a proper bastard reflect the irony of Everly’s clockwork heart. Everly feels and loves more than he ever could; she cares deeply for her friends and even her enemies, which is more than can be said for Killian. It is quite the journey; seeing her grow and develop her love and trust in others allows her to accept herself for what she is. She learns to let people in, which makes her character development worthwhile.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Into the Hourglass is an enjoyable sequel. It does raise the stakes. It increases the tension and keeps the reader glued by keeping that speedy momentum. Coupled with the fact that there is such an inner journey for our main protagonist and seeing her grow and develop into this really fierce and formidable girl that she wasn’t in the first novel lends to a very captivating story.

Second book in the Evermore Chronicles, this was a short, snappy, enthralling read like everything I've touched of King so far. This is a light, easy reader, great for the summer, the beach, any weekend where you need a break in a beautifully, and richly written, world.

In the second book of the series The Evermore Chronicles, Into the Hourglass, our Everley and her friends move to the Land Under the Water, where they must continue trying to catch the evil Prince Killian and take away the sword of Averley, an immortal sword created from a star.
In this book the author continues to amaze us with the quality of her prose as well as with her mastery of fantasy and the creation of worlds and stories so attractive that it is almost impossible to notice the transition between chapters, so read "just one more chapter" is an almost impossible mission!
Again, when I finished reading this book I immediately began to read the next one. I think I have found a new author to add to my favorites list!

5 stars for sure! In this extremely well written second book of the Evermore Chronicles you once again get to adventure with Kilian, Evelyn, and father time. This book drew me and just wouldn't let me go. I had to find out what was going to happen to Evie next! I would highly recommend this series to anyone looking for an adventure story that has amazing characters that you find yourself drawn to.

The second in the Evermore Chronicles series. King takes readers on another adventure with hints of Pinocchio in the novel .

To be honest, I was worried this book would suffer from the second book slump, but it really surprised me. Emily wove beautiful prose with an elegant and highly engaging story. I'm struggling to put my feelings about Everley and this series into words without giving spoilers because those are my favorite parts. I enjoy that she has to work for every scrap of information she receives. She doesn't just get the answer she wants when she asks.
Once I finished this book I knew I needed this series in hardcover. And audio. And ebook. If you are still on the fence about this series I recommend you go pick it up now!

This sequel to Before the Broken Star took the characters to some fascinating places. Again, this is a light and easy fantasy read, with a sympathetic protagonist and a suitably villainous antagonist.

I had difficulty getting into this book because it starts off very slowly. Also, as I did not read the first book in the series, it was a bit difficult for me to keep track of what was happening. However, midway, the story started picking pace and I found myself enjoying it. I really liked Everley as the main character, as she is strong willed and determined. I loved Jamison as well. I think what I loved most was how when people found about her clock heart and they still accepted her.

I have absolutely loved this series and can't wait to buy myself the books in hardcover because they are absolutely gorgeous and I highly recommend looking at the 'naked' hardcovers as they are truly something to behold. The first book did a lot of world building and plot development so that Into The Hourglass could continue on easily. This installment focuses a lot on Evelyn chasing Prince Killian in order to get her revenge. This series has great settings where you can feel yourself in the worlds with the characters, good world building that is quite in-depth and not just touched on but truly fleshed out, nice and realistic, slow-burn romance and great character development. I think my favourite parts were the romance, the plot, the fact there is a pirate aspect to the novels, as well as a strong female lead character who isn't afraid to fight a physically stronger male in a time when men dominate women, and is focused on getting revenge for herself and her beloved family.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as book 1. It lacked a lot of the excitement and newness of the first book. For all the new information revealed, I often felt like a whole book wasn't needed for them. That said, it was enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all ends in book 3.

Difficult to get into. The main couple went from tentative in books one to totally in love and kissing at the start of this, and it felt like a leap. Not a huge fan of the MC in general.

The second book in this series proceeds apace! In this book, Everly is pursuing Prince Killian across worlds that she could hardly have imagined, facing mermaids, danger, love, betrayal and mischief. This book has a definite Pirates of the Caribbean feel to it, which I loved.

I also really like the secondary characters in this book who were given more of a chance to be fleshed out. Everley’s love interest is a true hero. Two of her female companions fall in love, which I didn’t realize was coming and hadn’t heard this book was be LGBTQ inclusive. It’s a lovely surprise.

Emily R. King is a great read in these times where so many people are stuck at home. Do you want something fantastical, with a setting that will whisk you away from the craziness that is social distancing? This is a good series to start.

Into the Hourglass, The Evermore Chronicles #2, by Emily R. King has beautifully detailed cover art. This book picks up a couple months after the first book in the series, Before the Broken Star, ends and follows main character Everley. It was easy to fall into the story and to follow the plot. It sucked me in and had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Creatively intriquing with a world full of wonder.

The second instalment to The Evermore Chronicles. I absolutely loved the first book in the series and the second one doesn't disappoint. We travel across worlds to find Killian and the truth about Everley's destiny and the ancient sword of Avelyn. Being swallowed by the terrible Dorcha to pass into the Land Under the Wave is just the beginning of the adventure. You meet more exciting characters and the story will continue to grip you all the way through! Thank you for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

I love Emily’s writing. This book was a fantastic sequel. A lot of times a middle book will not have as well of a story arch but this book had great pacing and was very well plotted. I loved this series and enjoyed binge reading it in 1 week.

Everley Donovan plunges into the roiling waves of a strange new world to hunt a wicked prince who cheated time.

A high-fantasy novel, Into the Hourglass utilises the key conventions of fantasy to adapt itself into an effective and deliberate master-piece. Taking a literary skill, and an ability to compose a convincing narrative, Emily King has outdone herself.

As a result, the novel biomes a whirlwind of plot-twists, dynamic relationships and desire.

Into the Hourglass is book two in this series. It’s written by Emily R King. We’re back with Everley, following the wicked Prince to retrieve the hallowed sword of Avelyn. Everley must travel through treacherous unknown seas, which is a huge gamble with a rogue crew, heading for the otherworlds. I really enjoy this author, she has a way with writing that I enjoy. I do you do too.

Emily R. King is a wonderful storyteller.

She's done it again with great battles, pirates and charming dialogue and a fairy with noting but attitude and courage. The characters drove this book. Emily R. King wrote magic when she wove together a band of misfits with only mutiny, gold and the bonds of a gang that fends for its own. Into the Hourglass is a book that balances on the edge of a great sea wave. Each character drives the story of dear Everley down paths she wasn’t expecting and as a reader, I wasn’t expecting either after such a great first instalment.

Everley is such a read character. Her fears and her strengths and her dislike/like of her husband feels so human even when the characters and the giant sea whale may not be. But don't let any of that fool you into thinking she's anything other than truly remarkable. The delicacy of the clock shop, the nurturing uncle, the plot for revenge and the fear that this young girl was holding so tightly.

4/5 is my final review and it's a great book to read before a fire with a large cup of tea.
