This book was a miss for me. The story was very slow and I had a hard time being drawn into it, which is why I wasn't able to finish it.

Well, I am definitely looking forward to the next book. This one was not a quick read, but was definitely one that wanted me to stay up all night turning pages.

Overall,, "The Pachinko Girl" is a difficult read.

The story takes a lot of time to move forward making it difficult to engage within the plot. I made a lot breaks during my reading. In addition, the characters are rude and not likable.
The book is informative about the Japanese culture and the lifestyle of the middle class in Japan. It also
Introduces the Pachinko, a popular gamblin game in Japan.

I found this book really sad and complex as well as all what the author is telling us about life and culture in Japan.

I received an digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and Netgalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

The Pachinko Girl is an intense read that doesn't pull any punches. Viscerally emotional the characters feel all too real in situations that could have been pulled from the headlines.

5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.

I did enjoy this book, but it started out slow and I had some difficulty actually getting through it. I like the merging of two different cultures. I really like reading about other cultures, and I like how the story opened up with Smith explaining his last name. Overall, I did enjoy the story. I found it slow and the ending a little flat. I don't think I will read any of the others in the series.

I found it difficult to get into the writing style of this book and unfortunately wasn't able to complete it.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future installments of this series, however it’s not something I’m going to set a reminder for in my calendar. There was a bit of hype around this book and I found it to be just ok, not exceptional. I do think there is a lot of potential for this story to continue and flourish, which is why I will read future titles to see how it comes together.

Great read. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in.

I was interested by the concept of the book and found the setting and atmosphere interesting.

Unfortunately the translation to English is poor, many parts make no sense and it is very distracting - I was unable to finish because of this.

Note that this is the first in a series of three books, and does not have a real conclusion. It's an enjoyable read, with an interesting setting and very special characters.

Thanks to the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It was a little to much for me. Complex and hard to follow.

This is a beautiful thriller, I know it's a contradiction in terms, but it's the only way I can describe it. A western manager in a Japanese company in Japan finds a beautiful young girl in pachinko gambling parlour. He is intrigued by her, to the point where he appoints himself as her guardian angel.

There are a lot of underhanded dealing going on, inside the company, as well as with the game Misa is playing. She wants to find who murdered her cousin, although she seems to have taken the identity of her cousin - and she does not realise how every step she takes, takes her deeper into the world of sex, drugs and death.

It's an interesting look at a society Western people seldom see, or, in fact, understand. The book also takes a good look at how traditional life in Japanese society is actually transgressing human rights as we know it in the West.
It's a difficult subject. Do we intervene or don't we? Do we have a right to intervene in someone else's culture? How far can we let things go before we intervene?

Very thought provoking.

There are a lot of simple grammatical errors which irritated me. This could be sorted by a good ARC reader, so because of that, I cannot give a full five stars. The story in itself is brilliant.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. I would really like to read other books in this series. The author takes her time to develop a brilliant story. She just needs to sort out those irritating grammar mistakes.
