THE COST OF DYING by author Peter Brandvold is the 3rd book in the “Violent Days of Lou Prophet” series, and it pretty much lives up to the titles of both the book and the series.

Lou Prophet is a bounty hunter who is spending time with his lady friend when the story opens, and he wakes with a powerful hangover, and shortly thereafter finds himself bringing down a man who’s been abusing a young woman badly; only to find out that it happens to be a lawman that he’s gunned down.

Running for his life, Luke has to rely on all of his strength and keep his wits about him to survive and escape the men on his heels.

Along the way, Luke encounters a beautiful but dangerous woman that leads to him once again being dragged into a precarious situation caused by the manipulation of a woman, as he does much better at facing adversaries that are of the male persuasion it would seem.

Violence occurs pretty much throughout the entire book, and the extreme nature of it described in detail could put some readers off, but readers of typical western novels will find this book enjoyable as are the other novels in the genre written by author Brandvold.

3 stars.

I'm always surprised when I find that not every one loves Westerns as much as I do. My uncles taught me young that this genre is one of the best. I've read several of Peter Brandvold's books and enjoyed every one of them. He gives his characters morals and the backbone to fight for what they think is right, no matter the consequences. In THE COST OF DYING, the consequences mean our hero must run for his life. There's plenty of action and near misses with the bounty hunters to keep you reading and keep you gasping when it looks as if he's cornered this time. I must convince I watch Western movies too and I'd love to see this series done as Netflix specials.

It was great getting my hands on Peter Brandvold's third installment from his Violent Days of Lou Prophet series, The Cost of Dying. I liked it other books in the series but I think this one is by far my favorite. I give it five stars.
