Okay, I definitely picked this one up because of the title. 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my all-time fave movies, and as a cat lover as well, this romantic comedy looked to be nicely geared towards my interests. And in a lot of ways, it is; with a charmingly kooky protagonist in assistant museum curator Clara whose rescued cat Casper takes great pleasure in terrorizing her potential love interests and the beautifully scenic city of Cambridge, England as a backdrop.

Unfortunately, there are also a few things I really don’t like. Two love interests both given about equal weight in the story even though only one of them was endgame, both of them treating Clara badly - Josh was a player and Adam infantilized her - and, frankly, irresponsible cat ownership. About 90% of Clara’s problems with Casper’s attitude would have been solved if she’d neutered him and kept him inside at night. My inner RSPCA volunteer was SCREAMING about her blase attitude to Casper’s nocturnal wanderings. She lives in a city, not on a farm. Allowing an entire tom to wander the neighbourhood at night to terrorise the urban wildlife and father unwanted kittens made me want to shake some sense into Clara, and her pet ownership pretty much typified her entire attitude to life. She needed to wise up and start behaving like an adult if she wanted to be taken seriously, and stop complaining about not being taken seriously!

Clara works as an assistant museum curator but doesn’t want to do the unglamorous work of completing grant applications, even though she knows very well they’re the lifeblood of the museum; is it any wonder her boss is reluctant to give her greater responsibility? Her self-centredness was nowhere better illustrated than her relationship with her younger brother Freddie, who comes to stay with her at the start of the book. It’s more than a month later when Clara actually notices something serious is wrong and Freddie needs her help and advice, but doesn’t know how to ask for it. Or maybe doesn’t ask because he can’t rely on her to be helpful, I wasn’t really too sure. In short, Clara’s a flake, and though she could be charming and funny, she’s also unreliable. I struggled to like her, I didn’t believe in her happy ending because there was too much left unresolved, and I just wanted her to neuter the darn cat. Two stars.

The title grabbed me then this British rom-com stole my heart. This is a sweet and funny tale of opposites attracting. Clara is smart but a little flaky and has a few misses on her path to finding love. I really enjoyed this story.

I got this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book has a slow start. A lot of time is spent on setting up the life and relationships of Clara Swift. As a first impression, I'm not really liking her or the BFF or the storyline. A cat chases away your boyfriends? And you can't, like, IDK, text them later? I know we are suspending disbelief for the love of a good story, buuuuuut.... It's a big ask in this case.

The relationship between her and her BFF is kinda mean... They snipe at each other about past mistakes and it's really judgy. Clara and her brother Freddie have a nice sibling thing going, but again, Clara is so self involved and flighty she recognizes he has problems, but does not do much to help or ask about them until they are on her doorstep.

Then the boyfriends... They are both delightful, but again, she is flighty and weirdly overly attached or distant with no discernable reasons. My favorite person in this book is Ruby, who is a minor character. She is negativly described as a feminist 😳. Yikes.

For all my complaints, once the story got going, it was interesting to see where things went. I enjoyed the setting of the book a lot too. The main character did grate on me, which prevented me from really enjoying this book, but she may connect with others.

Happy Reading!

I will pretty much read any book that has a cat on its cover, cat in the title or is about a cat (yes I'm one of those crazy cat people.) Unfortunately, Casper, the cat, was not enough for me. I just didn't care for the book. I wasn't a fan of the characters, except for Casper. It's hard to resist large, orange cats with attitudes. Clara was twenty-five, but acted like she was nearing fifty without the chance of ever finding true love. I felt the same way about her best friend Heather. Did the best friends even like each other? All the men she dated definitely over reacted to her cat. Yes, Casper was a killing machine to any small creature, but a can of cat food would probably had him liking any guy Clara brought home. They could have tossed him some catnip and he would have been more pleasant. Clara's men problems weren't all caused by her crazy cat. What happened to the grants? Did Clara ever really finish them? What was wrong with Freddie??? I couldn't believe the reason he was living at Clara's house. The book needed more Casper, even if he was a terror.

I say give the book a try, you might like it more than me.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Harper Impulse and Killer Reads through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I want a cat like Casper, one of the funniest feline I've ever read.
I liked this quirky, funny and enjoyable rom com with a fleshed out cast of characters and an engrossing plot.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

Romance, cats, what could be better right ? Yes you’d be right because this book is wonderful, so funny and cute. So different from a lot of others on the market, it just seemed so unique from a lot of others books, it’s laugh out loud funny, the characters are so adorable and the cat, the best thing in a book in ages. Absolutely fabulous read.

This book was sweet, funny, and light-hearted. I enjoyed it! It was a bit of a romantic comedy, and I am totally okay with that!

This book just left me feeling kind of "meh". It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. The one thing I really love about romance novels (besides the HEA) is a good story of two people developing a relationship, and I just didn't feel that I got that from this book. It seemed to me that Clara, the main character, spent more time on the page trying to get her life together and imagining being in love than actually taking the time to develop a relationship with either of the male protagonists. Otherwise, this was a pretty funny book. Casper's kitty shenanigans were the best part of the book, imho.

More Bridget Jones than 10 Things, this light and funny British rom com sits solidly somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. There’s a whole lot that I liked about the book - it’s a true rom com with such a fun vibe, solid writing that moves quickly, and an interesting plot that feels like a modernization of a 90s movie. However, there’s a whole lot that I DIDN’T like as well - our heroine romanticizes things so much that she can’t see what’s right in front of her, the “wrong” guy plays a role in the story for far longer than I would like, and events are told exclusively from her perspective so the reader is left with her flawed interpretation of things. Did I enjoy the whole book as I was reading it? After a slow start, yes, absolutely. Was I disappointed by how things played out in the end? Kinda.

The story follows Clara, an art historian who is a serial dater. She gets attached quickly and blames the inevitable breakups on her moody cat, but her friends claim that her judgment is just flawed. After her most recent breakup, she’s feeling low and wonders whether her cat really does have better judgment about men than her. But suddenly two men enter her life, and while they’re extremely different, they both evoke feelings in her. One’s a charming, easy-going veterinarian and the other is a grumpy, awkward professor... in other words, one is her ideal man and the other is anything but Prince Charming.

If you’re looking for cute cat antics, this is definitely lacking in that department. The story follows much more like Bridget Jones, with two love interests who don’t seem like they should be in competition and a storyline that focuses on Clara’s work (plus a completely British feel). Probably the biggest issue I had with the book was how long the wrong guy was in the picture - it’s a clean romance, but there were definitely sexy times and strong feelings between Clara and the wrong guy until VERY late in the book. I would’ve loved more time for our hero to really shine, because what we know of him seems to be great. This one probably won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it held my attention from start to finish and provided many laughs along the way. I received a free copy via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review of this romantic comedy.

This book is a very cute rom-com story about finding the one you love through a cat? Or a cat choosing your partner (at the very least). While the story was adorable, the tone and voice weren't for me personally. I thought it was fine but sometimes it would sound a bit childish while reading. This is a small quip and something that is subjective, but it didn't hinder our reading experience at all. After a while, you either get used to it or you don't. I loved the idea of a cat choosing your love partner or the person you date, that is what drew me to the book in the first place. However, the book was a bit on the wordy side (Clara talked quite a bit sometimes about nothing important to the narrative). The main character, Clara, was okay. The cat was the best character and I did enjoy that its expressions were a huge part of the story. Not a bad rom-com to check out this winter, but it has its quips.

I don't giggle. Catch me giggling and you've done well to break through to me. Laughing loud, yes, and quiet stoicism, yes. Nearly never the thing, giggling, between the two.

So the fact that TEN THINGS MY CAT HATES ABOUT YOU made me giggle, countless times, bumped it from a four-ish star read to five. It is such a stinkin' cute story!

Clara Swift has only one steady man in her life... Casper the cat. Casper has opinions about the other men who show up in her life, hence the title of the book. This would seem to stretch credulity and yet... it doesn't. Everybody knows that cats are some of the most opinionated creatures, next to humans, to exist. So why wouldn't Casper 'accidentally' knock a potted plant onto the foot of a sexy, but sometimes insufferable professor? Of course he would!

And when a sexy, and also sometimes insufferable veterinarian joins the love triangle, Casper takes a liking to him. This works too, because it proves that just like his human, Casper can get some things wrong in how he sees and judges people.

That is the saving grace of this story... that Casper is fallible, where some authors would have made him all-knowing. Basically, Casper is what pets are to the humans who love them - someone to rely on. I know I trusted my cat and my dogs judgment of people!

Set in the romantic Cambridge, England, this story incorporates the august halls of study at the university, the quirky museums and quirky curators who no doubt exist everywhere, the complexities of existing as part of family and friends, the bliss and devotion of having a pet (being adopted by one, really), and the romance that can plague you or raise you.

It is an adorable, funny, sweet, silly, loving story and I am so grateful to have read it. It's just what I needed!

The title is the weak point here. There is only a passing mention of some things the titular cat “hates” and not even ten items. I get the play on words but it would have worked better if there was an actual mention of a full list. The other strange point for me was a passing mention of Casper the cat having fathered many kittens, it would have been better to mention how Casper is neutered. Passing comments like these make it sound like it’s ok to keep your pet from being spayed or neutered, and that is no good. Please spray or neuter your pets kids!

Ok on to the good. The main character was adorably bumbling, just a bit quirky and cute. The story flowed naturally and all of the characters were entertaining. I could easily see this as a cute rom com film or tv series.

Overall a very cosy book to cuddle up with on a cold winter night.

I chose to read this book mostly because of the title (a play on one of my favourite films) and the involvement of a cat. It’s as good a reason as any. Not having much luck with boyfriends, Clara has decided she will trust the opinion of her cat, Casper, when embarking on her next relationship; then two interesting men come along at the same time. I was not impressed with the vet, Josh, though Casper was putty in his hands. Right from the beginning, I was hoping the professor, Adam, would be the one to win Clara’s heart. This humorous, light-hearted romantic comedy is lifted out of the ordinary by the unusual setting in the academic world of the colleges and museums of Cambridge. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute, and quirky romantic comedy read that had me laughing out loud throughout the book whenever Jasper the cat was involved. I recommend this book if you are looking quick funny read, where we follow Clara, a hopeless romantic, whose cat Jasper hates all the men she brings home until she meets the young handsome veterinary who Jasper seems to adore, is this fate? Or is it Adam Warwick, the no nonsense professor she keeps running into. Apart from the romance aspect of the book I enjoyed reading about her relationships with her brother, her best friend, and her work environment, I just wish the author would have gone more into depth these aspects of her life to give Clara more character development. At times it felt like we were just floating on the surface.
All in all, this was a cute romantic comedy.

Not going to lie, when reading the first few chapters of this book I thought I was going to hate it, but I stuck with it and in the end ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!

As the owner of an extremely grumpy Ragdoll cat named Billy, I loved all the scenes with Casper terrorising the neighbourhood with all his shenanigans.

The MC Clara is a headstrong hopeless romantic who I adored and her sidekick Casper the moody and very emotive cat. Clara is an art historian who works at a museum as a curator. Clara finds herself drawn to her new extremely good-looking charming vet as well as the grumpy, rude, abrupt professor with a heart of pure GOLD.
This book had me giggling and smiling like an idiot on the train to work with all the sweet and hilarious moments.

I really enjoyed how this book didn't focus solely on the love triangle. there was lots about Clara's self-discovery as well as her relationships with her friends and family.

I absolutely loved this laugh out loud, unputdownable romcom, I am definitely looking forward to more from this author!

Thanks Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Would you let your cat pick your boyfriend? That's what Clara, at the urging of her brother, does. Caspar the cat is a pest in many ways but he definitely knows what he likes and who he thinks is good for her. So should it be Adam, the professor or Josh, the vet? Clara works as an assistant curator at a small museum in Cambridge, UK and deals with a pain of a supervisor. She doesn't do an especially good job of dealing with a variety of things; she's 25 and, let's face it, a tad immature. This a good read, nonetheless, with a positive outlook and some chuckles. Thanks to net galley for the ARC.

*I was kindly provided an ARC of this book on NetGalley*

What drew me to request this book when I saw it on NetGalley was the title. I love it when pets play matchmakers because they just KNOW. Always trust your pet. Secondly, the title is great. "10 things I hate about you" was an iconic movie (RIP, Heath Ledger) and anything that references it is a must-try.

I adored this book. ADORED it. It finally broke a reading slump I had with M/F romance. It was just so lovely. Though it’s by no means a Christmas story, I think it would be a perfect Christmas read, sitting by a source of heat (a fire, a heater, your napping pet). This book will warm your heart. It will make you smile and crack up at random times.

The story is set in Cambridge, UK (*swoons*). The female MC is Clara, an art historian who works as an assistant curator at a museum. Her lovely sidekick is Casper, a moody, too-smart-for-his-own-good feline who loves to terrorize the neighborhood and find trouble. As for the male MC – there was a point in the story that I wasn’t 100% sure who it was going to be, because, of course, Clara is such a sweetheart that not one, but two gentlemen try to win her affection. Only one is the one who truly deserves the entirety of her heart, but Clara being an initially clueless, ever hopeless romantic tries to throw it to the wrong person first. Lottie Lucas decided to grace her readers not with just one, but with TWO meet-cute (I love meet-cute’s): this made me confused! I loved it.

So, the candidates aspiring to Clara’s affection are the lovely Josh, a veterinarian from London, and the infuriating Adam, a stuffy, seemingly emotionally stunted but with a heart of molten chocolate ROMAN HISTORY PROFESSOR [with a disturbing fascination with death in the Ancient World – but, hey, as a fellow classicist I am in complete solidarity with him!]. Who is going to love Clara with all her quirks and tendency to throw herself in relationships head-first, her liking for pastel colors, beetroot cappuccino, and her slightly sociopathic cat? Who??

This book is undoubtedly what I would call a rom-com, but it does not lack depth in the exploration of how Clara (and Adam, and Josh) grow. They all learn something about themselves, about life, and about love. Clara has not lacked pain in her life: she has lost her parents in a horrific accident when she was around 20 – the grief is not talked about in detail, but if this is something that might bother you, you must be aware that she has a very emotional conversation about it with her brother. She craves happiness. CRAVES IT. But she does not always know what’s good for her. I am SO GLAD she picks the man who ACTUALLY LISTENS TO HER AND VALUES HER ADVICE. The fact that it is this that is the breaking point in the story – when Clara understands that only one of the two actually cares about her and not only about the physical spark between them – was so great. Overall, an A+ strong, modern young woman representation.

Get this. Read it twice or possibly three times. What a strong debut. I’ll be checking this author out in the future.

A modern day romance with cat humor. What more could a girl want? This was a sweet humorous romance. While Clara wasn’t my favorite character I really enjoyed the interplay between all the characters and Casper’s cat cappers. There was something so heartening about watching Clara grow and evolve from stars in her eyes and refusing to see the writing on that walls to still having hope and faith but no longer willfully refusing to see the truth. Plus there is stoic professor Adam Warwick who plays just a wonderful foil for Clara. They first appear as polar opposites and for all accounts should want nothing to do with each other. But as with many things, opposites attract and sometimes we all need a feline nudge in the right direction.

I was looking forward to a cat-themed romp, but this ended up being rather dull and just didn't have the sparkle I'm looking for in this type of chick lit. Might be worth reading if you are in the mood for something extremely light and fluffy, but I think there are better books in the genre. There also just wasn't enough of the cat, which was the main reason I requested this book.
