In my view this. is a typical Jeffrey Archer story. The characters and the writing are immediately identifiable as Jeffrey Archer's inventions.
The setting and the era are the ones that he seems to enjoy most and there is no doubt that the has the experience to support his storytelling.
It is a rapidly moving enjoyable story with the occasional unexpected twist and a final page suggesting that there is a series to follow.
I enjoyed it and recommend it to his followers as another entertaining book

This is such a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing read. I love the author's writing style, it flows the story along smoothly and the dialogue is witty and at times poignant. This is the start of a new series about William Warwick who, having wanted to be a detective from the age of 8, graduated with a degree in Art History (against his father's - Sir Julian's - wishes for him to study Law at Oxford) and begins his career in the Met. but eschews the accelerated promotion programme in favour of gaining experience.
During a visit to Scotland Yard he inadvertently reveals his immense knowledge of the art world to officers who thought they had recovered a priceless painting stolen 7 years previously and were heading to arrest Miles Faulkner who they believed to be the mastermind behind many works of art which had been stolen - then 'recovered' - and settled with the insurance company through an unscrupulous barrister, Booth Watson QC.
William's career begins; becoming a detective constable on the Arts and Antiques Squad, we see him investigating strange purchases of antique silver in London; staking-out an engraver in the West Country; being whisked through airports to Italy, being a deckhand on a treasure-seeking boat and sailing from Monaco to Southampton on a luxury yacht.

Does he and the team 'get their man'? well, you need to read it. It's a really good story written brilliantly and I can't wait to read the next chapter in William's career.

I have been a Jeffrey Archer fan for decades and was pleased to receive a free e-ARC of this first book in his latest series from NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

The book started with a rather unbelievable scene in which a rookie copper noticed something that seasoned detectives had missed. I let that one slip as the book took off and Archer's style swung into play with a very readable story which kept me reading, and I mostly enjoyed what I was reading. I think the book looks 'oomph', it's a gentle romp through art fraud and miscarriages of justice but it fails to deliver any punches. The detectives are praised for detecting something that I think any reasonably intelligent person would have noticed. And the ending came as no surprise at all. Overall a bit of a disappointment, but one I quite enjoyed reading.

I just love Jeffrey Archer books, I can't help it. It's been some time I haven't read one. And if you never read any, I'd highly recommend Kane and Abel, one of my most loved books.
On another note, I also loved this book. It's so much on his usual style, which is great. His storytelling, easygoing writing and wit just takes me to other worlds and stories. I just love it.
Definitely recommended.

Nothing Ventured is a typical Jeffrey Archer book - enjoyable, witty and very easy to read. It's a start of a new series and I am looking forward to reading the next one.

If you have read The Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer Nothing Ventured is written in a similar vein, the book feels like putting on a comfortable pair of slippers. . It is the story of William Warwick, son of an esteemed defence .Barrister. William has been privately educated, is a university graduate with a first in Art History and is expected, by his father, to follow in his footsteps, however William has other ideas. William has always wanted to become a police officer and joins the police force as a constable refusing to be fast tracked via the graduate route. And thus begins the story of William’s police career. He soon attains the rank of detective constable and is assigned to Scotland Yards Fine Arts and Antiquities Squad. Putting his sharp observation skills and quick wittedness into solving the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting. The story is engrossing and fairly romps along , the characters are all well rounded, there is a bit of humour, romance and some mystery. All in all a very good read which I enjoyed. Just fabulous! I mourned the end of the Clifton Chronicles so was delighted to see that the author was starting a new series. For a reader like me who often enjoys the subplot of a series as much, if not more than, the main plots this was a joy. Read in less than 24 hours this gripped me from the first paragraph. The author is simply a master storyteller and starting one of his books is akin to slipping on the most comfy slippers. Brilliant plots, characters with so much more to give and the inevitable cliffhanger at the end- just magic

Reading a new Jeffrey Archer is always comforting, you know exactly what you're going to get. Unfortunately I felt I'd already read this one. It seemed to be an amalgam of many of his previous novels using familiar characters . Still enjoyable but nothing earth shattering.

Loved the Clifton Chronicles so could not wait to start reading Nothing Ventured featuring William Warwick
I have always found Jeffrey Archer books so easy reading his writing style has flow that keeps you hooked and engrossed
then in a blink of an eye your at the end of the book and Mr Archer leaves you with a cliff hanger AGAIN

Nothing Ventured is the story of William Warwick, son of an esteemed defence barrister with a sister who is also a barrister. William however does not wish to take the family route, all he has ever wanted to be is a detective. Although a university graduate with a first in Art history he joins the police service as a basic constable not wishing to take the fast track through Hendon police college.
So starts this engrossing and entertaining tale, William is a wonderful well rounded character, a thoroughly nice person though nobody’s fool, apart from falling for a few pranks by colleagues.
His first case is investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt which brings him into contact with art collector Miles Faulkner an obvious criminal but able to avoid any charges brought against him, so far.
This is a story with humour, romance and mystery and I look forward to seeing William progress up the ranks, I was a little disappointed that certain people did not get their comeuppance but that will be, hopefully another story.

I liked the concept of this book: it was clever, as I have come to expect (given its links to the novels referred to in Jeffrey Archer's previous series, The Clifton Chronicles). I'm also a fan of the author's writing style.

I loved The Clifton Chronicles and it is hard not to compare the two - I hope that there will be more instalments and I will come to enjoy this series just as much.
