THE STAKES by Robert Kuttner is all about "2020 and the Survival of American Democracy." Kuttner, who teaches at Brandeis University, is also the cofounder and coeditor of the American Prospect, a publication which seeks "to advance liberal and progressive goals." As Kuttner himself admits, this new text is a "frankly partisan book." For example, he refers to "the deliberate and cynical work of the Republican Party" and says "one of our two major parties has become authoritarian" in just the first few pages. Kuttner does reference the under-35 generation as "stunted" and facing "unprecedented" financial burden. He also calls for "real health security" and "a form of nationalism ... that restores America's role as a beacon of liberty." However, given the obvious bias ("a president behaving like a sociopathic tyrant") it seems more appropriate to add THE STAKES to a public library collection rather than a high school one where we strive to offer more balanced perspective.
