Middle school students will most likely enjoy this second in the series about Awesome Dog and his human sidekicks. The story includes references to video games, spy-bots, and villains. Besides that, any book featuring a dog as a hero is sure to please middle school kids. Even reluctant readers can find something in this book to make them laugh and engage them in the action. The book also includes a code-breaking final chapter that encourages students to use their observation and problem-solving skills as they find clues throughout the book.

I received this book from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The ideas expressed here are entirely my own.

Hilarious! This is a great middle grade book. The characters are charming, the story is fun, and the illustrations add to the story.
I highly recommend this book!

O.K., This Was Sort of Awesome

I get "Captain Underpants", "Dog Man", and their clones. But it takes more than farts, toilet humor, and manic wackiness to step up into their league. You need some heart, decent characters, and just a bit of sly wit and kid friendly edge. This book has all of that.

The kids are smart. They don't play dumb for cheap laughs. There's not a fart anywhere. They are fairly mature and try to be the good guys. They are upbeat and full of energy. And, get this, there are some funny bits; there's clever wordplay; there's some snappy dialogue; and there are a few subtle digs and disses that even younger readers will get and appreciate. This is wrapped up in writing that is surprisingly advanced in terms of vocabulary and complexity.

With all of that in its favor I'm happy to overlook the inane plot. Indeed, looking over the genre it seems that wildly inane plots and ridiculously over the top action are sort of required elements for this sort of book. If you give me smart and upbeat kids I'll happily go along with that.

This was a fun find. (Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

This is a silly, fun book perfect for fans of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. The text is simple enough that early readers won't struggle through decoding the words and the story engaging enough that it won't feel like work! The kids solve their own problems and work together. All in all a great book for children new to chapter books.

This book was received as an ARC from Random House Children's - Random House Books for Young Readers in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

We are always on the lookout for books similar to Captain Underpants, Big Nate and Dog Man and Awesome Dog 5000 is another wonderful series that will spark the interest of our young readers. I love the concept of this book how a band of three intelligent children (Marty, Ralph, and Skyler) have this video game club and one of the members (Ralph) creates the Awesome Dog robot and everyone is excited to help program him. When a new mayor gets elected his name is Bossypants and he is set to make this town more structured than ever, even if it means to take down the robot dog. So enticing and creative especially in the construction of Awesome Dog and Bossypants battle suit. The children will absolutely go crazy for this and I can see this series growing just like Captain Underpants.

We will consider adding this title to our JFiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
