A young priest is sent to a rural church in the late 1400s to preside over the funeral of the local priest. In browsing the late priest's library, he discovers heretical documents and artifacts from the long past technological era. Apparently dates started over after an apocalyptic event in the late 20th century. The "new era" has sent the world into a new medieval time. While the premise is intriguing, Harris' verbose prose just left me bored. I read half of the book and nothing of note really happened. I couldn't see where the plot was headed, so I read a couple of other reviews to see if I was missing something. Apparently, other readers thought the same. So I gave up. Two stars for the idea.

I requested this book for one reason but when I read I realized this was not the book I was expecting. The book has a great twist. So weird. And for people who love that kind of thing I know that they will really like it but ultimately it wasn't my cup of tea. I found it a bit dark and weird for my taste and not the kind of fantasy I ususally read. However, I continue to recommend it to fantasy readers.

I never did get the connection to "second sleep" but that did not detract from thoroughly enjoying this post apocalyptic story. Told from a very unusual point of view for the genre.

Christopher Fairfax comes to a village in 1468 to look into the death of his predecessor, the priest of the parish. Everything in the village is off kilter and the truth is buried near the church. Be prepared for an apocalypse, but is it past or future? Dystopian vision in medieval setting? Puzzles inside puzzles.

Picture England 1468. the local priest has died and Farther Fairfax is taking his place. This novel becomes a sort of mystery as the priest tries to unravel what has happened. This was a very well written novel that I think book clubs would enjoy.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this early read.

1468 England
A priest travels to the countryside to replace the local parish priest who has just passed away suddenly. Soon Father Fairfax is pulled into a mysterious discovery and possible conspiracy that the church doesn't want to be shared, the locals fear and knowledge that will change his life forever. Mysterious and well written - the story pulls you in and involves you in a bit of a quandary. Is what we think of as ancient history really ancient or has it all happened before. Not quite a murder mystery or love story and one with elements of science fiction and certainly historical fiction, this is a difficult novel to pigeonhole into any one genre but it will have you asking questions. This book will attract readers from many different areas. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.
