3.5 SOLID STARS!
A good read. I had an idea where the book was going with Sadie's character but Will's wasn't predictable.
I enjoyed the story a great deal.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for a complimentary copy of The Other Mrs.

Oh, the dark and murky places you’ll go! Ms. Kubica has done a fine job of twisting a plot so intricate you’re not sure which way to turn. This book is dark and atmospheric in every way - Sadie and Will and the family’s dark/questionable past, the home they inherit in Maine is dark inside, as is the family member that comes along with it; Maine scenes are generally gloomy, and still the plot thickens. While nothing is very clear (it felt like I was reading through fog), I figured out what was happening about halfway through. Continuing on, feeling slightly smug, I was blown away by yet another plot twist, entirely unexpected. The plot held my attention until the end. An unexpected thriller with a surprising ending. The content and subject matter was at times depressing and difficult to read and take in. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for granting me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am in no mood for romance novels right now. I’m too cagey right now, too consumed with my emotions, and just way too sad to read about happy couples and their zany mishaps.

Luckily for me, I have a stockpile of thrillers to go through and if there’s one thing that genre does is it does not offer you any happiness. Rather it takes you on a nonstop roller coaster ride and in the end you’re nearly delirious.

The Other Mrs. is a dark, suspenseful tale about a family that moves to Maine after a series of incidents that occurred in their hometown of Chicago. It’s a fresh start blackened by the fact that they are moving into the main character’s sister in law who has recently and volently killed herself in the attic. In her will she states that she gives them the house and also full custody of her teenaged daughter, Imogen, who in fact was the one who found her mother’s lifeless body. So, inheriting a house where a family member’s death took place and also a somber, angry teenager. Yup! That sounds like a great beginning to any “fresh start”.

As you can tell, things are not great in the household, located on a tiny Island of Maine and it gets even worse when a neighbor is found murdered next door. On an island community where the general population is less than 100 people, tensions and fears are high and the race to figure out who the suspect is mounts. Our protagonist, Sadie the local physician finds herself trapped in the whirlwind of it all. This is a complete descent into madness.

This book was amazing. From the very beginning I could tell it was going to be one of those books that I would read in one sitting and it absolutely was. There are multiple perspectives told in this book and reader, it’s unreliable as fuck. You immediately sense that something is very fucked up and wrong and that feeling doesn’t leave you until the very end.

I liked Sadie as a character. She was complex and introverted and still fought her way through this novel to find out what has happened and who she is. She can be a bit maddening at times and I honestly wanted to shake her lmao.

Imogen is heartbreaking. Every time the author stated she was moody I wanted to scream that she had just found her mother DEAD. Nobody should ever have to go through that. She out of anybody else had good reason to be the annoying, angst ridden teenager. Your mom dies and your relatives you barely know come live in your house, and your aunt is walking around in your deceased mother’s clothes?! Who wouldn’t be angry?

I really can’t go into much more without spoiling but if you are a fan of thrillers and suspense, you will definitely like this book. I don’t believe I’ve ever read any of Mary Kubica’s other novels but that definitely has to change. She has a way of weaving complex characters through an insane story and keep you on the edge the entire time. My craving has been satiated. For now.

Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review. This review will be posted on my blog https://aelilyreads.home.blog from 8/25/2019 to indefinitely.

I have read most of Mary Kubica’s previous work and enjoyed her previous novels. This new one is no exception. We have the POV of three female characters (Sadie, Camille and a child called Mouse) with the story of Sadie and her family moving to a desolate rundown Maine home left to them, along with the deceased woman’s daughter, Imogene. So what can go wrong? Murder, suicides, affairs, paranoia and a snow storm to name a few. I was really engrossed in the story, with plenty of ‘clues’ thrown in for good measure. It was thrilling and throughly unpredictable. Chilling ending to be sure.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance ecopy. I am a huge fan of Mary Kubica. This was definitely a must read for me especially since I have read so many of her books. Mary has a way of writing that makes you really feel each emotion of the characters. Sadie is new to the island and is trying to find out who could have committed the murder of Morgan Baines. She doesn't know who she can trust, even in her own family. Lots of twists and turns. Won't disappoint!

The Other Mrs was a pretty big disappointment for me. Yes it did end up to have a redeeming quality in the end but the bad far out weighted the good. Let me start by saying that it has the bones of a knock out story but it just didn't deliver. Being told through 3 female pOVs, a 4th coming in at the end, the 3 female characters all very different on every level and that was interesting because you had no idea who to believe or which way the story would go, but that doesn't last too long. About halfway through your are given a decent amount of clues about which direction to look further into and soon you start to piece together reasons as to how the 3 are connected. If you are the type to read a lot of psychological thrillers, I'm positive you will have it mostly figured out before the ending because this type of plot has been done COUNTLESS TIMES BEFORE!
So let's talk about the main character Sadie. Early on the started to get on my nerves because nothing was ever her fault, never taking blame and accusing others. Hher nothing skills were horrendous, never spending time with them, never played with them, thought them to be liars on multiple occasions, but still worst of all was how she treated Imogen, 16 years old, under her guardenship since her mothers suicide. She accused Imogen of a multitude if things one of them being murder, which she also accused her 14yr old son, Otto of. Sadie showed no compassion for others and was quick to deflect and place blame in those closest to her.
I did not care for the writing style in this book. From the early stages i was speed reading and skipping full paragraphs, probably every other, because it was so drawn out and repetive. The same topics were brought up on many different occasions through the book making it tedious instead of enjoyable.
As I said before the basis of the book had been done so many times before. This was going somewhere great in the beginning but it just got lost. I wish this had been more original and I think then it could have make a better impact. There was one saving grace that kept me reading towards the end and that was the arrival of the 4th POV, Will, Sadie's husband. He turned out to be the ultimate plot twist and in my eyes, saving the book. He gave the cliched ending a drastic spin that I was neither expecting nir saw coming. Overall, not impressed. I just don't think Kubica is for me.
I want to thank netgalley and the publisher for granted me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Not as thrilling as I had hoped nor as well thought out or entertaining as this author’s other novels. I was hoping for more and this one didn’t deliver.

I received this book "The Other Mrs." from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own. Amazing book. I could not put this book down. It has so many twists and turns. The words flowed smoothly and kept my interest until the end. Just who are these characters? Where is this story going? Sometimes the end disappoints you after getting involved in the whole story but not this time. The end was great. Not really liking the cover of the book though.

Mary Kubica gets better with every book written. Loved this story (especially as it was set in Maine). Although I figured out what was going on about half way through the book, it was a great read. Read it in one day! Our library will most definitely be purchasing. Thank you for the advanced copy.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this fabulous ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sadie: the timid doctor that had a break down and agreed to move far from Chicago with her husband and sons.

Will: Sadie's husband and college professor. He moved from Chicago to take care of his niece, whom mother just committed suicide.

Imogen: the goth dressing, world hating, lost teenager that just lost her mother and now living with people she barely knows.

Morgan: the neighbor that was murder weeks just as Sadie and Will moved into the neighborhood.

Otto: Sadie's older son. An introvert kid, that was bullied at his last school.

Camille: the disturbing woman that Will is having an affair with.

Mouse: the six years who is badly abuse by her stepmother.

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!" (Sir Walter Scott) is the perfect beginning to this book. It is literally a web. A web of lies and un-predictions. I really though I had this story down and then came another twist. Sadie is kind and I really thought she was paranoid. Yet, she has every right to be. Will is a typical cheating husband, but that's not all. The suspense is never ending even at the slow part of the book. The story hits close to home at the end of the book.

Four I’m so freaking dizzy after so many twists, I felt like the earth moved under my feet and the rug pulled out from my feet over and over again, get your tickets for crazy train ride, because Mary Kubica wrote another surprising, fast pacing, heart throbbing thriller stars

So our facts:

-WE HAVE A ONE WEIRD FAMILY ON THE TOWN:
A dysfunctional family consisted of two little boys (Tate, this family’s the most regular kid and Otto who brought his school a knife to avenge his bullies), Sadie the mother who had troubled past, suffering from bipolar disorder, keeping so many secrets and recently resigned her job from a hospital, Will, flirty husband who probably cheated on his wife moved to Maine to embrace a new family member, Will’s niece Imogen (violent, hostile, loner) who will start to live with them after her mother’s loss.( There is possibility she might have killed her! Yes, great addition to this creepy family!)

- MORE CREEPY, SNEAKY CHARACTERS PLEASE:
Let’s add Camille and the mouse to the equation. Camille seems like the stalker of the family who wants to replace Sadie and become “Other Mrs.”, having an affair with Will.(That’s what she says, we still didn’t hear Will’s side of the story till the end of the book.)
We still don’t know the poor little girl nicknamed “Mouse”, suffering from her monster stepmother’s abuses. (Is she really suffering or is she a pathological liar? We’re still in the dark!)

- FAMILY MOVES AND MURDER IN DA NEXT HOUSE!
As soon as they moved to their house, their neighbor Morgan was murdered. Don’t say please: “It’s always the husband!” This time he had an alibi. Don’t you think, it’s a coincidence that the murder occurred after the lovely family’s moving to the new house? No, I don’t think so and you shouldn’t, too.

INTERESTING FACTS:
Police officer Berg suspects Sadie for the murder. But Sadie claimed she barely know the victim. When we read her POV, we may agree that she is telling the truth. But we also read Camille and mouse side of the story and we got confused. There are so many missing pieces and unfitted parts of the puzzle. Who was telling the truth? Who killed the neighbor? WHY ALL THE CHARACTERS OF THIS BOOK (instead of Tate) IS SO SPOOKY, DREADFUL? The vibes we got for them so suspicious made you felt like a lie detector, any time they start to talk, you start to blip because most things come out their mouths are not true.

FINAL:
So good! Thanks to my spider senses I solved it a little earlier but twist and twist and twist make you whirl your head like a helicopter tour from Vegas to Grand Canyon which meant it is great kind of dizziness! Get ready for surprises and big revelations. Nothing as it seems. So give your full concentration not be fooled.

I loved most of Mary Kubica’s smart writing and her great psychological analysis of her characters. She is one of the gifted writers. “Good Girl” was my favorite book of hers. “When The Lights Go Out” was a little disappointment for me. So I was hesitated before starting this book. But the first pages captured my heart and my mind at the same time and I knew from the beginning, this is right kind of thriller for me. Thankfully I didn’t get wrong!

Special thanks to Park Row and NetGalley for sending me this great ARC COPY in exchange my honest review.

AW, YOU GOT ME!

After the initial introduction of Camille, I had thought I had figured out the premise of the book. What I had not realized was that while I was patting myself on the back with my right hand, I should have kept my eye on my left still clutching the Kindle. It would seem that the plot twist was pulled off with a misdirection engineered by using another common misdirection (a little bit of repetition to hammer home an overused trope most definitely did the trick). Apparently, I am not as clever as I thought. That was one helluva ride! Kudos!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Mary Kubica for an ARC of 'The Other Mrs.' in exchange for an honest review.
