"THE BODY" by Bill Bryson.

Did you ever think you ever needed an owner's manual for our complex body? I think this was a brilliant idea!! We live in this body that we are so intimate with and yet could hardly speak of what goes on inside or tell us the functions of the organs we have, nor even name them, Bryson took a Biology Book, that is the last thing I ever want, and turned it to an amazing book that I cannot keep my hands away from. Converting a daunting and boring science book into an understandable and entertaining book for EVERYONE is like wizardry. His writing is brilliant and truly enjoyable. Bryson kept me intrigued and in awe for the facts and information he magically sprinkled throughout the pages. Additionally, the anecdotes within the chapters made for a really fun read for me.

This book had accurate and important information that I did not even learn in my pre-med courses in college. I feel like I can win a trivia contest or even join Jeopardy after reading this book. Bryson wrote a phenomenal book full of amazing information without feeling like I am stuffing my head with information, but for some reason I am retaining these facts and enjoy talking about them to everyone I meet. I have recommended this book to many people already and will continue to do so. What an awesome gift for anyone that can appreciate a great read and feel so much smarter after reading this. Amazing job!

Thank you NeyGalley and Double Day Books for the ARC ebook for my honest and objective opinion.

Three things that I loved about The Body:
1. It is super informative! I highlighted so many intriguing facts while reading this book, and was excited to share them with my family and friends - truly fascinating information!
2. The Body is ultimately a biology book, but you don't feel like you're reading some boring subject from high school bio class; Bryson makes the content exciting - like a thriller through the body!
3. It is hilarious! I wouldn't expect anything else form this author!

The Body works to inform the reader about things they may have never learned in school and also corrects a lot of misconceptions. This is definitely a book I suggest if you like learning about science and biology.

Thank you to Netgalley and Doubleday books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Being a big fan of Bill Bryson's book AT HOME, I was hoping that THE BODY would be similar--full of "I can't believe it" facts with a great dash of humor. THE BODY did not disappoint! Every day I would scramble home from work so I could keep reading. THE BODY is comprehensive, covering every part and even includes insight on aging, death, and sickness. I even found the book to be spiritual at times--Bryson is adept at communicating his awe of life, and it spills off the page. We are quite a wonder. Bryson's diction and tone are delightful, and you'll be full of lots of facts to gross out all your friends. I absolutely loved this book!

Another fascinating, chock-full dive into a vastly complex topic from the indomitable Bill Bryson, who has pivoted from straight travel writing to tackling the larger questions of the universe with his signature blend of extensive research and humor. Here he looks at the intricacies of the human body, a complicated and mysterious mass that we all carry around without really thinking about every day (only you definitely will, after reading this book). Reading a Bryson book is like having a conversation with that friend who's always learning something new, and assumes that you're just as interested in the strange and unusual things he's picked up. Sometimes this amount of information is overwhelming--this is not a book I would read in one sitting--but it's always entertaining and informative.

I find the human body to be so fascinating. As a medical professional, I had to undergo many years of learning about anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry to earn my degree. I loved learning about the science that makes us human, and I still do! Thus, The Body: A Guide for Occupants, was a real winner with me. Bryson has a way of relating information that makes reading nonfiction feel fun and engaging. I recommend this read for anyone who enjoys learning about science and humans and what makes us, us.

Bryson writes with an obvious sense of delight and joy in following his curiosity through the body. I can imagine science teachers using excerpts in their classes.

As always, Bryson's chummy style and self-deprecating humor make a huge subject bite-sized and accessible, engaging and memorable, all the while imparting knowledge and facts in an instructive (but painless) way. Like the travel writer he is, Bryson takes us on a trip through the human body, and as anyone who has read his other travelogues knows, he's a fabulous armchair travel companion.

A great overview of the human body by the witty Bill Bryson. Medical history/human anatomy books can sometimes be a bit much but Bryson keeps it just in-depth enough to stay interesting to the layperson.

He really does take something completely boring and make it fascinating. I do occupy my body and suffer several afflictions he discusses. I feel I know much more about "it" and enjoyed the learning experience immensely.

Bill Bryson rarely disappoints, and in "The Body", he excels. In his gentle humorous voice, he describes the human body and how the various parts and systems function - or don't function, leading to illness & death. Compulsively readable, this is one of my favorites for 2019 so far! Perfect for would-be doctors or those curious about bodily functions; Bryson's wry personality shines through and makes this a terrific choice for non-fiction readers.

Bill Bryson is always entertaining... and fascinating. The Body is another example. I have to stop and read paragraphs out loud my husband because I just can't keep it to myself.

I love books that examine a complex historical, scientific, or political topic in a grounded accessible way. Bill Bryson’s latest accomplishes this for the human body with his usual wit and flair.

Bill Bryson can be such a hoot - first he dissects rooms in a house and now a body - yours. By the time you finish the book, you will know more about your body than ever thought was necessary to know. Great facts, easy to read even with some humor. A must for all libraries, personal and public.

Bill Bryson returns to give you an overview of the human body, and what your doctor may or may not know about it. Funny, dry, and chock full of facts that will impress your friends and family, this is one that shouldn't be missed. I plan to listen to it as well, if Bryson narrates the audiobook (which he usually does). Fun way of introducing science to people interested in the facts but don't want to get bogged down with too many scientific terms.

Bill Bryson's usual delightful style of non-fiction writing is definitely apparent in this book. Highly readable, full of fascinating tidbits of information, I have absolutely no problem recommending this to people who enjoy Bill Bryson or non-fiction.

My first book by Bill Bryson was "A Short History of Nearly Everything." Since reading it, I have frequently included a Bryson book or two in my yearly reading and have suggested them to others. The Body is sure to be another book I will regularly recommend (and in fact already have).
The book itself winds through the system's of the body one after another. Bryson discusses what makes up the system, the important discoveries and discovers of parts in the system, always with an eye toward what makes for a good story. Finishing with the systems, he moves on to the functions of the body, illness and causes of disease, and finally death.
Even knowing a good amount about anatomy and scientific history, I found myself learning while reading things book. This was particularly true when he discussed new research and interviews with scientists on the cutting edge of physiology or disease research. However, don't mistake this as a boring textbook. While this does not contain the wit and sarcasm of his travelogues or even Brief History, Bryson has a style of writing that keeps you engaged and reading well past the time when you should have gone to bed.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in anatomy in particular or science as a whole. You are sure to learn something and have fun doing it.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read a pre-release copy this book.

Bill Bryson takes the reader along on the ultimate travelogue — ourselves. With his usual knack for great prose, he makes even the most clinical terminology readable. Bryson’s humor flows through the book at a much deeper level than the epidermis, all the while offering up stunning facts about our miraculous chemistry. I took short breaks between chapters to contemplate the fact-filled details of what I’d just read. Lots to digest here.
