Yet another YA novel set in a magical world and, apparently, the start of a new series. The publishers info suggests the work is intended to be a retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, although it's hard to see how this is the case beyond the MC's deformities and early scenes based in a truly alarming monastery where the MC seeks solace from the faithful (who advance in rank by spotting and identifying others faults) by hanging out on the rooftops. Not for me, but I could easily imagine a high fantasy YA reader who would love it.

Honestly I’m really not sure I see the Hunchback of Notre Dame influence here but it didn’t matter because the vibrant world building kept me rooted to my seat. The characters were engaging and it was a unique twist on an epic fantasy plot. Fast paced, witty and compelling. Can’t wait for the next one.

This story is an epic fantasy with phenomenal world building, a fast paced plot, twists and turns, and likable yet flawed characters. I've never read a book with an MC who has made the kinds of mistakes that this MC makes--I found writing riveting and intriguing and unique. I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure and can't wait for the next installment.
