This collection of poetry re-examines the Greek myths through the lense of the women that so often were the casualties of the heroes and gods. Nikita Gill gives a voice to their side of the story, giving the original myths a depth and realism they've been lacking. She also looks at some of the major gods and goddesses and the ways in which they may have adapted to the modern world.

It's hard to write a review for a book you love so dearly so I'll keep it simple.

I want more. I love this, bought it immediately and have recommended it to friends.

Fresh off of reading “Circe” by Madeline Miller, I was excited to see Nikita Gill’s interpretations of the women found throughout classical mythology. Set-up as a series of poems, letters, and prose, Gill beautifully personalizes the stories we've all heard of the great goddesses found in mythology. Gill has a way of making me feel incredibly proud to be a woman and powerful in my femininity. "Great Goddesses was no different and not only did I recommend our library purchase it, I will be buying my own copy as well.

As always, I love Nikita Gill's approach to interpreting things in a unique and refreshing light. This book did not have the same emotional affect on me as some of her previous poetry but I enjoyed getting to know these greek deities through a new lens. I look foreword to reading Gill's next work.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this advanced reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.

I think the average reader's experience with Great Goddesses is going to depend heavily upon what you're looking for. I tried to review this fairly with a middle-of-the-road rating because, as a poetry collection, it didn't work. There's no rhythm or flow to 90% of the writing, much of the text feels a little repetitive, and more passages than not instilled about as much of an emotional response as the average textbook would. On the other hand, as a collection of tales about Greek deities, it works fabulously. Gill does a splendid job of subverting old tropes and offering new perspectives into the stories of many beings, in both positive and negative ways.

I loved the concept of this book! The gods are so fascinating and have such rich stories. I found the book a bit slow and difficult to get sucked into at first, but the style grew on me. I was expecting short poems, but this was more like regular fiction with some lyrical writing. I would recommend to someone who loves the gods and mythology.

3.5 Stars! Great Goddesses is an inspiring collection of poems as told through the eyes of ancient greek goddesses. Nikita Gill creates a dialogue between the reader and the goddesses by speaking about hardships, heartache, and perseverance. You will also find some "Mortal Interludes" in which the author herself speaks on the subjects. The book is (somewhat confusingly) split up into sections via different deities and while the meaning of it seems intentional, I found that sometimes certain pieces didn't fit in the specified section. The goddesses are shown in a few different ways, for example we see them as ancient beings and then later interacting in modern day society. For the casual poetry reader this may be something a little too niche, but for the ancient greece lover this is a blessing in a book! Overall the book is a wonderful collection of feminist poetry and prose and I enjoyed my read!
