"Nothing Ventured" marks the start of a new series by the very versatile Jeffrey Archer. As in all his other works the writing is crisp, characterizations well done, and has a plot that captures the reader's immediate attention. It is a novel about a detective and it does definitely involve cases that are believable and solved only by hard police work.
William Warwick is the son of a very successful defense attorney who would like nothing better than to have his son enter his practice when the time has come. But William at the tender age of eight wants nothing less than to work as a detective and aims for that goal. While both his father and his sister Grace are attorneys William doesn't lose sight of his goal. And after finishing university he applies to and is accepted for London's Metropolitan Police Force .After undergoing an apprenticeship under the watchful eye of an experienced patrolman William manages an appointment to Scotland Yard's arts and antiquities squad.
The story follows William's first case, does not gloss over his initial trials and possible errors and becomes a very engrossing novel. In tracing a possible lead in a case involving a missing Rembrandt masterpiece he visits an art gallery and meets Beth Rainsford. Beth is a beautiful woman and does become the person that William is interested in marrying. To add a bit of spice Beth has a secret of her own which she is reluctant to share with William and one which will have a bearing on an action of his.
Mr Archer points out his probable future plans for this series by placing the start of William's police career in the mid 1980s which would mean that future novels will bring him into the 21st century. Certainly books that will reflect his literary skills and attract the reader to seek them out.

This is the first book by the author I have read even though he has been around for quite a while. I decided to read this one as it is the start of a new series revolving around the character of William Warrick. The story takes place in and around London. I was able to quickly pick up on the differences in how they refer to things versus here in America. I also found having watched a number of British show and movies that it was easier to follow the location changes. Overall this was a very enjoyable book and I look forward to the rest of the series and I will definitely check out some of his earlier works.

I received a free Kindle ARC courtesy of Net Galley and the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would provide an honest review and post it on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon and my review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook page.

I have been fortunate to read Mr. Archer’s books for over forty years and still I am amazed at the way he turns words into addictive tales with plots and characters that truly come alive. “Nothing Ventured” follows in the mode of other series, as we look forward to the development of William Warwick. Warwick has chosen police work as a career, much to the disappointment of his father, a renowned barrister. In a time of superheroes and vigilantes, it’s refreshing to read of an ordinary man who is extraordinary in his devotion to his vocation. Art theft and forgery come to the forefront in the story, but romance and a wrongful murder charge also take much of his attention.

A very interesting start for a new series about a British detective dealing with major art theft. Archer introduces a large number of characters who I expect to meet again in future novels.

This is once again a fine Archer read, despite the disappointment of his last novel. I enjoyed this, especially the information about the vast industry of forgery and theft connected to art and antiques.

I understand that Archer wanted to cram in all the characters for a new series, but honestly there was just too much going on. The protagonist is. a winner and I enjoyed his meeting his significant other early on. His colleagues and family are not well developed yet, but I expect we will see lots more of them in the future.

This was a very pleasant read and I look forward to more novels about William Warwick.

Thank you Netgalley.

I was completely captivated by this book and especially by the character of William Warwick. It is a pleasure seeing him grow as both a man and a detective - you could tell from the beginning of the story when he let Fred Yates win the snooker tournament what an exemplary human being he is. I also enjoyed learning about how crimes are solved and the nitty gritty of police work. This is the first of Jeffrey Archer's books that I have read but he has made a fan for life and I intend to look into his previous works.
