I am very impressed by the realism of the dialogue amongst the characters, their determination in working together to solve problems and the overall kindness they show each other. It is inspiring and enjoyable to read. I love that a mother/daughter team work on these graphic novels. That's probably why you can identify with the characters so well. Recommended.

Yeah, This Works

There are a number of individual books and some series out there that try to make nerd stuff cool. I've never warmed to them because they usually have a defensive or apologetic tone. Like somehow you have to explain or justify a STEM interest.

I like the Geeky Fab 5 because they just roll up their sleeves and do it. There's no proselytizing and no justifying. There's just can-do energy and a bunch of smart, confident girls. They lead by example, not with ham fisted preaching.

The books are for pretty young readers. Everything is upbeat, problems are always solved, endings are always happy. In this volume we save, care for, and place pets that have been dislocated by damage to their shelter. The girls write a program for an app that matches pets with adopters. A handicapped basset hound gets a mobility assist. The shelter is rebuilt. Everything falls into place easily. Is it a bit cartoonish? Sure. Are the girls basically interchangeable but for one or two identifiable quirks? Yes. Is the cat Hubble sort of a jerk? Guaranteed. But that's all fine, because the point is to put some independent girls in charge of achieving explicit STEM goals. Since they do that with style, cheer, good humor, and plenty of cooperation, I'm a fan.

This adorable graphic novel is written by a young girl and her mother. While I haven’t read the others in the series, this was easy to read as a stand alone. A tornado comes through their town in Illinois and destroys the local animal shelter. The geeky fab 5 girls come up with a solution to aid the animals shelter and provide all the animals with a forever home. I love how each of the girls have their own unique interests and strengths and the novel highlights young girls making a difference. Young girls and boys will enjoy following the geeky fab 5 on this new adventure and may even inspire them to make a change in their own communities.

This installment of the Geeky Fab 5 series was fun and informative. I would definitely recommend it to students who have grown out of the Magic School Bus books but still want STEM stories. The diverse cast, bright graphics, and humor will keep students engaged and entertained.
