Cristela Alonzo shares her upbringing as a Hispanic American that I could relate to. Her upbringing was very similar to my own and it was interesting how she applied it to various songs that had meaning to her life. I hear Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day" in a new light.

Such a fun concept pairing the chapters with songs that made an impact or brought about memories of specific times in her life. I think this one would be even more enjoyable as an audiobook to get the author's full personality.

Perfect in every way. Had the flow of a sweet melody that will captivate all audiences. Music to my ears. And book taste. 5/5 stars

I loved this book. Through a clever way, Cristela Alonzo walks us through her life since growing up in a small Texas border town to her career as a comic, writer, and producer. Each chapter is based on one of her favorite songs that describes that period of her life. I actually listened to some of the songs I was not familiar with and I somehow made a special connection to them because of the pages I was reading. Alonzo really shows us where hard work and dedication can take you, and how sometimes you have to make sacrifices for family, but the universe always rewards you. Before the book, I was familiar with her stand-ups and her TV show (I mean, she had Carlos Ponce in her cast! Come on!), and because of the book, I admire her for her courage to stay true to herself. The book has everything-comedy, emotion, and humor-and best of all, it shows how Latinos can succeed despite the odds.

I can't remember what made me follow Cristela Alonzo on Instagram but I did, and that's where my curiosity started. Who is this funny lady? I Googled her and learned the basics and then quickly watched her Netflix special, Lower Classy. A couple of months passed and I then I saw that she had a book coming out in a weeks time! What?! I couldn't believe I hadn't seen any hype on Bookstagram and knew that 1) I had to read this book and learn more about this awesome Latina and 2) that I could help with some awareness.

Damn I did not know what I was getting into with this book. Cristela has had SOME LIFE. There were chapters and experiences which I'm sure were hard to write but I really appreciate her sharing her struggles because I know that I related to many of them and many other people will relate as well. Especially with so much crap happening in the world these days, it was refreshing and inspiring to see someone place such value on family and reading about the bond she had with each member of her family was really heartwarming.

I highly recommend this book! There's a lot of heart, a lot of laughs, and some great songs to add to your playlist.

Those of us who were kids or teens in the 90s or 2000s will giggle and reminiscence at the chapter title, songs mentioned and movies talked about in Cristela's book. Also being from Texas, there was a lot about her book and family that I found myself nodding my head about. Wondering if there would be enough food some nights, not allowing friends over because we were definitely poor, rarely having the newest of anything. This was a fun book to read for the most part but was also still real.
