The author does an excellent job breaking down the steps for drawing each creature. Very easy to follow and find success with drawing.

This is the best drawing book I've seen, because it encompasses multiple ways of drawing (for instance, grid, instead of just the step-by-step method), and activity pages for a break from drawing. It is really nice to have facts about the animals you are drawing included.

I like the style of this book. Part instructional drawing book, part puzzle book, part trivia.

There are three different styles of instruction here: Tracing, Grid, Step-by-step.. You’ll learn something about the butterflies and birds that you will be drawing. Then you’ll find space to use one of the methods to recreate it. In between your projects are a few games and more trivia.

Great for kids (and adults) who are just starting to get interested in drawing.

If I was given this book when I was a child, I would have definitely loved it! I'd definitely recommend it to children who loves to draw and loves birds and butterflies!

Besides teaching you how to draw in different ways, the book also has some information and fun facts with each bird and butterfly besides the quizzes and puzzles in it.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the digital copy for an honest review.

Thank you Netgalley for a review copy of this book.

This book is primarily aimed at young children and takes them through the drawing process step by step. The instructions are easy to follow and includes tracing paper and grid box techniques to help them along the way.
The pictures are really attractive and colourful and includes some lovely facts about what they are drawing. A great book for children who love doing art.

As someone who is not any good at drawing this was a really comprehensive and easy to follow guide to drawing and other fun facts that even I could follow along with and have fun with my kids at the same time.

Fun activity book for all ages, very colourful and lots of easy drawing projects, puzzles and information highlighting birds and butterflies. Not a huge book but enough to keep someone amused for a time.

Want to learn how to draw bird and butterflies? This is an excellent place to start. I liked that they added facts about the birds and butterflies besides the drawing instruction.s. They provide everything but the pencil/s for drawing and the coloring of the birds and butterflies. There are also some other activities in the book that I won’t mention so you can discover them for yourself. I did enjoy the activities too.

I don’t think that this book is for pre-kindergarten or kindergarten ages. I thinks kids in third grad and higher would enjoy learning how to draw. It is well illustrated and thought out in teaching the drawings. I did try drawing the butterflies and the birds. I still need to practice but at least my butterflies and birds are now recognizable and definitely better than before!

Birds & Butterflies Drawing & Activity Book is a new tutorial guide with additional activities aimed at younger artists, but fun and usable by everyone. Originally released in 2016, this reformat and re-release from Quarto on their Walter Foster Jr. imprint is 64 pages and available in spiral bound format.

There are 17 tutorials included which utilize basic techniques such as grid drawing, geometric base shape sketching, and tracing, along with word hunts, geometric grid coloring, map range matching puzzles and more. The drawing tutorials are species specific and include a lot of support information about the different species of birds and insects (specifically Lepidoptera).

This would make a great travel activity book for a trip. I always packed sketch pads, drawing materials and quiz/puzzle books for my kids when traveling. This book packs a lot of possibilities into a little space. It would also make a super gift for a young nature drawing enthusiast. Although the text and word puzzles are aimed at younger artists, it would make a fine drawing guide for beginning artists of any age. I managed a creditable adonis blue butterfly drawing by using only the tutorial steps in the book.

Five stars. Well made and engaging.

Walter Foster Jr and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Birds & Butterflies Drawing and Activity Book: Learn to draw 17 different bird and butterfly species. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

Birds & Butterflies Drawing and Activity book has everything that new artists need to succeed, including tracing paper and practice pages. The author takes the time at the beginning of the book to list out the tools and materials needed, plus the basics on how to use the tracing, grid, and step-by-step methods. The book includes many interesting and recognizable favorites like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and the American Goldfinch, as well as other birds and butterflies that may not be familiar to readers. Each page is brightly colored and includes basic information and fun facts for each bird or butterfly.

Some of the pages use the tracing method, others the grid method or step-by-step. The biggest problem that I had with the book is that there really is not enough instruction for readers to follow along successfully. I also had an issue with some of the birds and butterflies that use the tracing method, as the ones that were lightly sketched were difficult to transfer. I did like how the drawing was broken up by word searches, mazes, quizzes, and trivia, giving readers a fun activity to do while learning to draw. Overall, Birds & Butterflies Drawing and Activity book is a fun book, but I would not expect miracles regarding the drawings.

Birds & Butterflies Drawing & Activity Book is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. I loved this book! It has so many different birds and butterflies in here to draw! Gorgeous! There are three different says to draw them and each way is shown. I liked the step-by-step 'bubble' way. There is the grid way and tracing way too. The book gives the buyer tracing paper.
Besides drawing, there are quick interesting facts scattered throughout. Then at the end of the chapter there is a fun quiz on the facts! All in fun! There are activities too, mazes, puzzles, etc.
A fun book that spreads knowledge and increases talent all while making the person smile!

I have to say right up front how disappointed I was in this book - designed as a print book but reviewed as an ebook - which purports to teach how to draw birds and butterflies. I felt it didn't do anywhere near enough to teach any art at all. The book offers three methods and cycles through each of them with different pictures alternating between birds and butterflies. The first is simple tracing, and the print version of the book has tracing paper built in, presumably over the top of the image you're expected to trace. Tracing isn't really art in my book.

The second method is drawing using a grid. You copy each square section of the larger image by duplicating the lines in a marked four square wide by six square tall grid. This is a step closer to art, but it's still not really teaching anything. The third method comes closest, but even here there are problems. The third step involves drawing simple shapes initially, to 'map out' the more complex shape of the thing you're drawing. I've seen this method used many times in art books and while I remain unconvinced that it's the best method to teach art, I do acknowledge that it provides a rudimentary means to that end which hopefully anyone who is serious about pursuing art will find ways to circumvent as their personal technique improves.

My problem with this method was that as presented here in this book, it offers not steps, but jumps. The examples shown start with simple clusters of circles and some other shapes for, say, a butterfly, and these are refined in subsequent steps, but suddenly, in five steps, we have a professionally-drawn butterfly and in the sixth, a colored one without any hints, tips, suggestions, or advice about how to get there from step four, which was nothing more than an outline that might as well have been traced.

For me this was a major failing with this book because it assumed way too much, particularly with the coloring. It was a mystery because on the face of it, the book appears to pander more to people who want to idle their time away while on vacation and who are not really that serious about learning to drawn and paint. For an art book this contains a disturbing amount of non-art activities, such as word search, sudoku, spot the differences, and on and on.

Those pages could have been better used to explain the art and suggest ways to work on and improve ones technique. So on the one hand we have these professional insta-art projects which start out looking like amateur step-by-step methods before leaping to a professional finish with no suggestions as to how to get there from here, and on the other, we have completely unrelated activities that contribute nothing to learning about art and seem merely to be mindless time-wasting activities.

Admittedly, it helps to step away from your art now and then, so you can come back to it with a fresh eye, and I know the cover says quite plainly it's an art and activity book, but the way this book is thrown together seemed insulting to anyone who seriously wants to learn how to draw and color, and pointlessly complex to anyone who merely wants to dabble and who really does want some mindless distraction for a vacation. For these reasons I cannot commend this book, with anonymous authors, as a worthy read.

This is a lovely book for learning to draw birds and butterflies. A variety of techniques are used so a beginner can find the best one for them. It is a fun book with lots of additional puzzles and activities as a bonus. It is a great rainy day book for children, and for adults learning to draw. I loved the variety of species used and the way the user can make their pictures as detailed or basic as they choose. A really good book thank you.

This is a fabulous book for beginners and art classes. This book contains good information and techniques. Easy to read and well written.

This book is great for all ages and skill levels. It teaches three main techniques for drawing: tracing, grid, or step-by-step. Unlike most books, though, that teach all three, this book gives one technique per bird or butterfly, which may be a little discouraging at first to beginners. The good news is that once you are practiced in tracing or grid method, you can basically still follow them even though the book does not offer them. It does also have a great reference guide to tools used. I think I liked best, though, the activity pages. Sometimes when going through a "how to draw" style book, if things haven't quite come out right, I get frustrated and put the book away for a bit. Instead, with this book, there are pages I can do while I regroup before going back to drawing. Sometimes just having that simple clearing my head moment can really help.

Very basic drawings with grids provided to make it easier. Also some puzzles along the way. Good book to keep in the care to entertain younger children.
