I have read Danielle Steel books since I was a teenager. The last dozen books or so have felt like either she was rambling and repeating herself over and over OR the book seemed rushed. This book is old school Danielle Steel. This is the story of Alexandra Wickman. She lived a life of privilege, being presented in Queen Mary's Court. Then Hitler came to power and Alex, along with her two brothers, William and Geoff, join the fight against Germany. Alex volunteers in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry but soon her superiors realize that she is over qualified for driving lorries thanks to her amazing language skills. What happens after that is too good to spoil but this book covers her lifetime and how she leads her life after the war. I felt that the last few chapters spanned too many decades but I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!

This book was so good, I finished it in two days! I would definitely rate it as one of the top five books of 2019!

I admire Alexandra Wickham because she is this strong independent woman who doesn’t want to settle down and have kids like the rest of the girls her age during World War 2 but instead wants to have a part in the war effort first with the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry and then as a SPY. I like her brothers Geoff and William,. Geoff I thought was modern but also conservative. He wanted change but not too much pertaining to women’s role outside of the home. William on the other hand was a lot more conservative. He didn’t want to see too much change but wanted things to stay as they were, I admire both of them though because they both took the time to look after their sister.

Richard, the man in her life, her husband, is the type of man everyone wants to fall in love with and marry. He’s respectful of Alexandra’s feelings. He’s doesn’t think women should stay home and take care of kids but kind of have a life of their own outside of the home. Also, he doesn’t pry into Alexandra’s business or her professional life. Great husband material!

I’m sorry this is a short review but after kind of reviewing the first part of the book, I stopped because it was so good I felt any more reviewing wouldn’t do it justice.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend! If you’re looking for a book filled with mystery, danger, travel, espionage, this is the book for you!

Once again, Danielle Steel has turned out an engrossing story that sweeps a broad brush across the personal landscape of her female protagonist. The majority of the book is set after World War II, when an aristocratic young woman named Alexandra Wickham (or Alex for short) gets involved in the British secret service. We follow Alex's adventures in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Hong Kong, Moscow, and finally Washington, DC. Each location has interesting plot developments. But, as this is a short novel, DS does not go into a great deal of depth about each of the missions. Rather, we get a high-level overview. For example, within a single page, Alex's healthy child gets sick and dies and she discovers she is pregnant again. Normally, this sort of episode would encompass several chapters of a novel, instead of a few paragraphs, but Steel rarely goes into a lot of detail with her plot twists. This keeps the story moving rather briskly, so I won't complain about the brevity.

In addition to the main plot about Alex's adventures in espionage, we are treated to her romance with Richard and the family dynamics of her aristocratic family. Steel's storytelling strength has always been in her ability to probe the relationships between her characters. While many readers will come to this novel expecting the emphasis to be on secret government operations, they may find themselves more interested in learning about Alex's family developments.

D.S. has done it again!!!!!!!!! Spy has her signature comforting style of writing that makes you fall in love with her characters and keep you reading till the last page. Alex is a young woman who becomes a spy in the war and starts a fifty- something years career. She has some dangerous missions and some easy ones. Her job takes her all over the world and we follow right along with her. Thank you to Netgalley and Random house Publishing for my honest review

This is the kind of book that will keep you up reading late into the night. I fell in love with the characters right away and found myself feeling sorrow for their losses and joy at their achievements. This book is filled with adventure and danger and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happened to the characters after the book is finished.

It has been a while since I've read a Danielle Steel book, but this made me remember what I have been missing. If you enjoy books where you never know what is going to happen next, that have love and romance and make you feel like you are part of the world the characters live in, you can't go wrong with this book. I encourage others to read it.

Filled with historical events, great characters and imaginative storytelling, this is one of those books you don't want to miss out on. I only wish it had been longer.

This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

Danielle Steel's latest book Spy is a historical fiction book set in WW2. The main characters Alexandra and Richard meet during the war and fall in love. While this is a romance story, it is also a story about Alex's career as a spy for the SOE, and the M16. Alex is portrayed as a very strong-minded,independent,and career-oriented young woman.Due to the setting being during WW2, and having the main character Alex take on a lead role in a career in espionage missions for her country while following her dreams and her heart throughout the story makes this book a true gem. The story and scenes described throughout are not only exciting and interesting to read, but they are authentic.
This book was a very inspiring read with a strong female lead filled with romance, as well as filled with loss as it was set during war time. Danielle Steel has a real knack for blending all of the elements together so beautifully that the reader will be spellbound by this book.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my review.

This book is set during WWII, and when it starts we see that Alex making her debut and being expected to participate in all of the coming out parties. However, her spirit finds these social events to be boring and she wants more adventure. When the war starts Alex wants to do her part to support or help during the war, as her brothers, both pilots, are doing. When she is recruited to become a spy she begins to lead a double life.during this time she meets Richard and they fall in love an eventually marry after the war. However, her double life doesn't stop just because the war has ended. This book was a quick interesting read! Alex has much tragedy but also happiness as well. Although this does have romance in it, it also has history so keeps your attention! another quick read by the author! Thank you NetGalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I am a fan of Steele’s books. A big fan, however this one dragged on a bit too much in parts especially the placement of the characters in India and Pakistan.
The role of the woman during WWll was an interesting lesson for me.
It did pick up towards the end, thus the three stars. I appreciate Netgalley allowing me to have an advanced copy.

I enjoyed this book. This is the story of a young English girl during WW2 who becomes a spy for England. This follows her career and personal life thru the years. It was an enjoyable read, although the 2nd half of the book seemed to drag a bit. It held my interest, although I did skim a few parts in the last half of the book. I felt the characters could have been better developed, but if you are looking for a book that will entertain and hold your interest this book will fill that role. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy of this book.

Interesting story of a young woman whose ability to speak French and German helps her get recruited during WW2 to run spy missions for England. She loses her 2 brothers to the war, but carries on. She meets a young man but tells him nothing of her job. They marry and after the war, he gets jobs around the world and she goes with him. For a woman who didn't want to settle down, this was the life for her.

I haven't read Danielle Steel in years. This book reminded that there are so many amazing historical fiction authors right now and unfortunately Danielle Steel is not one of them. This book felt poorly researched and like written to honor a contract.

The Spy is a fun, exciting, beautiful read. Alexandra, reared in aristocratic circles, becomes a WWII operative. She handles all of her assignments with aplomb and later goes on to work for MI6 for two decades. She follows her diplomat husband around the world and then enjoys her grandchildren, who delight in knowing grandma had been a spy. In fact, one will follow in her footsteps. There is sorrow, interlaced with intrigue and lots of splashes of foreign interludes, I sailed through this book and was sad to see it end. The vivacity of the story will delight DS fans.

I have not read a Danielle Steel book in years. Not because I didn’t like the author, but because I just never read a description that appealed to me. When I saw this book on Net Galley,, I requested it right away. This book has everything that I love about historical fiction, it is set in WWII England, a strong female character that is recruited by the SOE, a dashing RAF pilot, well you get the idea. Alex comes from British aristocracy and is bored with her privileged life. When her older brothers both join the RAF, Alex volunteers for the Nursing Yeomanry. She draws the attention of the SOE who recruit her as a spy. On the way back from her oldest brother’s funeral, she meets dashing RAF pilot Richard, and they begin a relationship. She can tell no one about her involvement with the SOE. This story follows Alex’s exploits with the SOE, her growing relationship with Richard, and her involvement in the SOE. Without giving too much away, the SOE is the tip of the iceberg for Alex. It is an incredible life story. That being said, the depth of character development and writing in general is lacking. I felt like I was skimming through her life. Still it was worth the read. thank you Net Galley for the ARC of this book.

Danielle Steel does it again. This one will be great for fans of her work who also enjoy works of fiction like The Alice Network.

In Spy, Danielle Steel again goes to the past to bring us a story of the importance of woman in war times. Spy is set in England during the time of WWII. The main character Alex Wickham, leaves her peaceful home in Hampshire to go to London as a volunteer in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. Alex has language and other skills that catch the eye of a group of spies and she is tasked with small but vital tasks to assist England in winning the war. No one can know the work Alex does, not her parents, or the young pilot that she falls in love with. Alex learns the art of espionage, leading to long career as a spy in exotic places and historic times. Alex marries, matures, has a child, she continues her spying for England in exotic places with her husband Richard.
Alex’s extraordinary adventures in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Washington, D.C., shape who she is and the important role she and others like her played in war times. Spy is a wonderful novel that again shows Danielle Steel's ability to wonderfully tell any story.

a real page turner from the master of novels. Loved the story and the characters. A departure from the usual romantic story and a really good one. You will definitely want to read this book. One of Danielle Steels best.

Danielle Steel books are a hit or miss with me. “Spy” was more of a miss. I did not like the way the story jumped around at such a fast paced. The first half of the book during the war was ok. The last half not so much.
Thank you to NetGallery, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read and review this book and give my honest opinion.

As always Danielle Steel has not let me down. I love her books because the stories are so eclectic.
This book, which begins just before World War II, combines a story of family values with historical annotations.
It tells the story of Alexandra Wickham, a young English woman who travels to London to assist with the war efforts as a volunteer with the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. Both of her brothers have already enlisted as pilots and she also wants to do her duty to King & Country. When a secret spy network learns that she is fluent in multiple languages she is recruited.
This story follows her through numerous dangerous missions during the war. During this time she meets Richard, a pilot she begins dating and later marries. We follow Alex through her missions during WW II and beyond. Spanning many years, as she follows her husband to multiple countries with his work with the foreign service, she is called on to continue her life of secret espionage. No one, neither her family nor husband, know of her secret career. This story shows her strength through dangerous situations as well as personal tragedy.
I laughed. I cried. I cheered Alex on from page 1.
I love Danielle Steel and am also a history buff, so this was a great read for me.
I couldn't put this book down. I found myself reading through the night just to see how it all turned out.
I would (and will) recommend this book to everyone. Whether you like history or not, this book will not be a disappointment.
Ms. Steel, you are a marvel at what you do!
