I realized I never wrote my review. This was a great installment in this series. ASD with the previous books it was fast paced and took me on a thrill ride. These characters have grown so much and I have enjoyed their journey.

Wes and Hudson are happily settled into their lives together, working as private detectives, living in a new home in an upscale neighborhood, and enjoying time with their found family. However, when a suspect they are following on a case ends up dead, it is just the first in a chain of strange events. They learn that shifters are dying of drug overdoses, something seemingly impossible given their metabolisms. Newbie vampires are showing up around town and no one knows who is siring them or why they are attacking shifters. Hudson’s niece, who everyone thought was dead, shows up very much alive. And the men end up with temporarily custody of an amnesiac teen shifter.

As Hudson and Wes tackle each new challenge, they soon realize that there is something going on connecting all of these incidents, but understanding what is happening and who is behind it all isn’t easy. The men are supported by Iskander, Evan, and Lexi as they attempt to figure out what is happening and how to stop the deaths. But when the men realize the danger is connected to Hudson’s past, the situation turns increasingly dire. Now Hudson and Wes are going to need all their considerable strength, plus the support of their friends, if they are going to fight the bad guys and make it out alive.

Graveyard Shift is the third book in Jenn Burke’s incredible Not Yet Dead series. One of the hallmarks of this series for me is the fabulous world building, and it continues on here in this third book. This is a world with vampires, shifters, and other paranormal beings, plus a not-quite-ghost god in Wes. Burke manages to create a world that is rich and detailed, but never overwhelmingly complex. This story focuses a lot on shifters and I enjoyed the way Burke brings this paranormal trope to life within this world. The mystery and suspense elements are really nicely integrated with the world and there are so many twists and turns here, there are constant surprises. I loved the way all the pieces start out as disparate, and suddenly everything comes together in such an engaging way. There are lots of high octane moments, some truly scary situations, and one incredibly sad event here that really make this an intense and engaging story.

While the suspense and world building elements are excellent throughout this series, what I really love here are the characters. Wes and Hudson are long ago lovers who finally found their way back to each other in the first story, Not Dead Yet. The bond between them existed from the start, but Burke manages to show them growing in their connection and their love for one another over the books. Here these guys are tested in so many ways, yet the strength of their bond is what gets them through the really hard times. We get a really nice resolution here for the men as a couple, and this story really ties up the series so nicely.

I really can’t recommend this series highly enough. The world building is wonderful and creative, the stories are exciting and intense, and the main couple is lovely, with some really great friends. I have thoroughly enjoyed every story and definitely can recommend it to everyone.

Oh my gah, this book killed me. Oh man. K.i.l.l.e.d. Me. So not fair. It was so good, though, except for that one part. And I can’t say. You have to read to find out. But you better bring tissues with this one, because it is the most intense one of the series. Everything seems to be coming out of the woodwork at these guys, including people from the past that were thought long gone. It’s suspenseful, it’s action packed, it’s got so much going on. And I love this series. Just a bit sad though.
Wes and Hudson were doing alright with their private investigation business. Evan was up and coming in the business, their little family seemed to be growing a little bit. Iksander was doing well, in spite of his attack last book, and it seemed to be going alright. Until, Hud’s old cop boss brought something to his attention that coincided with a case that Wes was working on. And suddenly things were adding up to what was going on. Shifters are dying, by overdoses, which should be impossible. A shifter has now become a small part of their family after another incident. And Hud’s niece, who is supposed to be dead, is now in his home. But what came at the top of that mess, was something no one was expecting. At all. And it’s turning out not good. People, shifters and others are dying left and right. And some are surprising. And they may not make it out alive. None of them.
I have grown to love these characters so much. They have grown into characters I will never forget. I remember when I first saw these books posted, I was so intrigued, and now I’m so glad I’ve gotten a chance to read them. Not getting to be a part of this world would have been a crime lol. But this was the hardest one to read. With everything going on, and it’s a lot, it’s a lot to take in. There are twists and turns in this that just leave you going…..wha??? And it’s so good. Believe me. It made the book so much better. But you better believe you need tissues. Shew. Wes and Hud go through hell and back. Pretty much literally, along with everyone else. There’s so much I want to share but I can’t because it will give so much away. So, I guess I have to leave it at this.
It’s an amazing book and series. It’s packed full of everything you could want. At least for me anyway. I love each of these characters. It’s been so much fun to read. Even if sad. I hope that you all will love these as much as I have.

I just can't get in to this series. It's time to admit this just isn't for me. I find it slow going and I'm not remotely attached to any of the characters. Lot's of good reviews though so a case of "it's not you, it's me".

This is a fantastic series that I have been enjoying from the beginning. Hudson & Wes have had my attentions and I had been looking forward to starting this one. At this point they are settled as a couple, working together and getting comfortable for the future. All their close friends are right by and life is working out for these two. This leaves the story to focus mostly on solving the disturbance in the local paranormal community, of course there are the typical life threatening events along the way. While I enjoyed the book I missed the romance, and the time with these two together. I also felt through the “mystery/suspense aspect it was a bit repetitive. I found myself skimming, but the last 5% did make me a happy reader. I loved the first two books in this series, for me this one the story didn’t quite catch my attention.

I have loved every word of this series. Paranormal usually isnt my jam, but Wes and Hudson's story is impossible to stay away from. This wrapped up brilliantly

Paranormal romances aren't usually my thing and this one was spooky enough that I unfortunately had to DNF. But if they are your thing, you might really love this one!

The Not Dead Yet series has been such a delight to read and Graveyard Shift was a great conclusion. The premise is what first caught my attention and it was executed so well. The overall pacing is phenomenal- Jenn Burke has a way of drawing you and not letting you go! I devoured all three books in four days. The characters are all so amazing and I loved seeing their little family grow throughout the series. Graveyard Shift is definitely the saddest of the bunch, but don't let that deter you! There are still plenty of funny and swoony moments. Wes really comes into his own, Hud opens up more, and the rest of the gang still kicks ass! My fingers are crossed that we will get more books because there's no way Wes & Hudson are going to stay out of trouble!

“Here we are in the future and it’s bright. Nothing to fear. No one to fight. I can’t believe we’ve come so far. Happily after after, here we are.” ~ Steven’s Universe (Happily Ever After)

Wes and Hudson are as settled as they can be with their “different” family of supernatural beings. After deciding that they are fated to investigate only preternatural events, they have plenty of work coming in. They have survived a lot of dramatic events in their time together, but nothing could have prepared them for what’s to come.

Wes is still struggling with his god powers, using them sparingly since he is not yet sure what he can do with them. He has tried to explain it to Hudson as best as he can, but he is not sure that Hudson comprehends the enormity of his powers. He still sees Wes as his ghost, dead but not dead, immortal lover while Wes knows that he is so much more.

Wes and Hudson, along with Hudson’s detective partner, Lysander, are approached by parents whose daughter has gone missing. During their investigation to find the girl, they discover that there have been several shifter deaths. Shifters are not easily affected by drugs but, apparently, there is a new, potent drug being circulated that may be responsible for their demise. While following a lead they run into a teenage girl shifter who is disoriented and lost. They discover that she was drugged and forced to stay in her animal form for a long time, causing her to forget everything. She becomes another member in Wes and Hudson’s ever-growing family of ‘outcasts. When Hudson’s long-lost niece shows up, with serious complications, Wes and Hudson’s life gets even more confusing, blurring the lines between their prior beliefs of good and evil. But because she is family, Hudson defends her and tries to justify the reality of the situation.

Wes and Hudson continue their complicated, surreal story into the lives of “the other” while fighting for justice for the supernatural beings they come into contact with. As always, Wes keeps his sense of humor, cheering up his often glum partner, Hudson. The story is dark at times, but the characters are endearing, even though they are ghosts, gods, werewolves, shifters, demons, and witches; characters that are not usually considered to be endearing, Jenn manages to make them so. Thanks, Jenn, for another surreal story with amazing characters.

First and most importantly… this cannot be the end of this series. However, if this truly was the end of the Not Dead Yet series, then I seriously hope that there is a spin-off series in the works because some things were not totally okay at the end of Graveyard Shift.

To say that there was little down time in Graveyard Shift would be a HUGE understatement. The description of this book is accurate when it says that Wes and Hudson’s “family” was pushed to the brink. There was danger around every corner. At times it was hard to tell the good guys from the bad. And… there were tears, at least for this reader.

There were so many twists and turns that I don’t want to take a chance on giving anything away. The only thing that you really need to know is that if you’ve already read Not Dead Yet and Give Up the Ghost, you’re really going to want to read Graveyard Shift. Be prepared though, because nothing these guys go through is easy and their HEA is bittersweet, but well earned. ❤

I loved this series, and it's a shame to see it end but at the same time, this last installment really depressed me. Its difficult to explain without spoilers but it felt like the side characters were shortchanged. It honestly felt like Hudson was as well. I was still holding my breath for everything to be right again and then I got to the last page. So while I recommend the series overall, this particular book made me sad and didn't give me the warm fuzzies I want out of a romance.

graveyard shift, book 3 in the not dead yet series, finds wes and hudson tackling new mysteries and old foes. the crew is as enjoyable as ever and the mystery keeps you riveted as do the relationships between all the characters. the supernatural world growing bigger and broader than in the previous novels.

the story stands alone, but you lose something if you don't read the first two in the series. these characters have a history and their arc over the course of the series has been deeply satisfying to read.

**graveyard shift will publish on november 4, 2019. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/carina press in exchange for an honest review.

It's the second book I read by this author and I found it entertaining and unputdownable.
I loved the likeable and well written cast of characters, the engrossing plot full of twists and turns, and the well thought world building.
i can't wait to read another book by this author.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I liked the first book, I really liked the second book and I loved the third book in this series! Graveyard Shift is not a stand alone book and should be read after the first two books in the series - so if you haven't started begin with the first one (the whole series is worth reading).

Graveyard Shift is where I thought Jenn Burke really hit her stride and I loved everything about this book! It gave us a great plot, a bit of a mystery, heartache and love. I've heard this is the final book in the series and I'm sad that there won't be more but what a perfect way to wrap up Wes and Hudson's story. I hope that we get a chance to see them again if the author writes about some of the great secondary characters in this world.

I really loved seeing Wes finally accept his power and come into his own! I loved the strong relationship between Hudson and Wes and all the people that made up their family. I laughed, I cried and I couldn't put it down!

If your a fan of the first two books you'll love the third and if you haven't started this series I highly recommend it.

Jenn Burke gave me exactly what I needed, y’all. She pushes her characters in all the right ways as she doubles down on what they mean to each other, expands their view of Toronto’s paranormal scene, and throws them into a mystery with deeply personal consequences.

It didn’t take me long to realize I wasn’t gonna get ANYTHING done until I’d binged the whole thing.

I dearly hope there’ll be a 4th book. I love these characters so damned much.

The Queer’s Review

I am not okay.

Like, at all. Take a look at the blurb again. That first sentence? That’s the mindset you have to get into before reading the the third of Not Dead Yet.

I mean, I was warned. I was warned more than once and I thought I was prepared.

I thought wrong.

Omnious much? I know. But you need to have that feeling of danger that is lurking in the corner of your eye. Feel the fear. Breathe it in and don’t let it out. Check if you’ve got enough comfort food. Check again.

And then begin.

If you’re like me you may end up thinking it’s not that bad in the beginning. Like, it’s bad and I was slightly distressed but I could deal with it.

Especially because the whole paranormal family is just so fucking cute with each other. So. Fucking. Cute. And fun. How do you expect me to remain sane when Hudson makes jokes like that:

And what kind is that? Tall, handsome, Spanish?

“Bloodsucker.”

I prefer ‘toothily endowed’.
(kindle pos. 638

And then he gets even cuter. I’m so proud of him? See what a loving family you have chosen yourself can accomplish.

And then comes the suffering. There is the kind of stories where you suffer but you’re happy. I don’t think you’ll be happy during this suffering. I might fear for your sanity if you’re happy during it.

I actually had to put done Graveyard Shift more than once, yell a little bit on Twitter about it, and then I went grocery shoping to escape all the feelings. I was never this confused and not myself while shopping for groceries. Not even while running a fever.

Then I build two bookshelves – not from scratch, but still – because I still couldn’t face the suffering. But I managed to finally finish reading and then I kinda just sat there a little.
Bookish Thoughts

I mean, I can’t say “all was well”, but… in a way? Maybe? But only if I don’t think about it too much.

It also helped that I reread the exclusive short story Jenn did for Queer Books Unbound. And you should too, regardless of if you’re processing Graveyard Shift around christmas or in the heat of summer. Maybe read it twice.

In my opinion, Graveyard Shift is by far the best book in this series, but I’d suggest keeping the tissues handy while reading. I loved it, even though I also wanted to shake my fist and shout “No! Why?” at Jenn Burke at a certain point in the story.

I don’t want to say too much about the plot, but readers should be prepared for things to get dark. When people are put in peril, sometimes bad things happen, and I appreciate that the author didn’t shy away from that fact. It helps that the book ends on a life-affirming note for Hudson and Wes, so we get some sweetness to balance out the bitter.

I’m not sure whether the series is over or more volumes are planned. If there are more, I’m curious about what’s next for our undead heroes, given the changes that happen in the novel. For one thing, Wes finally embraces his godhood, which . . . hell, yeah, and about time. A Wes who can wave away problems lessens the stakes of the action, though, so that’s going to require some skillful writing to keep things interesting.

For anyone who loved the first two Not Dead Yet books, this one is required reading, and you should grab it immediately. If you haven’t read the series—what are you waiting for? You’re missing out!

A copy of this book was provided through NetGalley for review; all opinions expressed are my own.
