Veronica can see and speak with her mother’s ghost, which is concerning since this could mean her benign brain tumor is getting worse. Sawyer is an adrenaline junkie and hanging out with Veronica seems like the perfect thrill to satiate his addiction. When Sawyer’s family moves into the first floor apartment of Veronica’s house, neither could have predicted the impact the other would have on their lives. Tensions and /hostility?/ rise between them, but an English assignment to investigate ghosts and haunted locations brings them closer than they thought possible. A companion book to Only a Breath Apart, Echoes Between Us explores what it means to really live and love.

Like all of Katie McGarry’s books, this was an intense and compelling story about two opposite people realizing they have more in common than they thought and offer help and love when the other needs it most. I enjoyed this book overall. It was a really great examination of what it means to be alive and to live in the present. I also liked how this touched upon addition and showed the difficulties of admitting the problem and trying to heal. I always enjoy McGarry’s writing style because she alternates points of views between the two main characters. This ensures that I’m hooked with all the storylines going on and don’t want to quit reading. This book also solidified the fact that I am a wimp when it comes to anything scary. There was a scene where the characters go to a cemetery to investigate a ghost and I had to wait until daylight to read it, even though it wasn’t actually that scary or creepy. This book would be appropriate for those 14 and older. There is mention of drug use for medical purposes and sexual content, though the scenes are the fade-to-black type of scenes.

I love how everything in this book takes on a different meaning after you have read it. Like the rest of McGarry's books this one is wonderful , but it is deeper. You can read it several times and it is still not clear if anything was ever truly verified or validated. You can piece together things that prove and disprove but the beauty of the story is indisputable.
I would say this book is one of McGarry's best and I have a library of her work that I re read several times a year.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tom Doherty Associates for the privilege of received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. The ideas and comments are my own.

I'm a huge fan of Katie McGarry's work and this story did not disappoint! A truly beautifully written story - I laughed, I cried, I was disappointed, I was angry - I swear I experienced almost every emotion throughout this entire novel. One HUGE emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish. She truly captured the emotion when it comes to fighting addiction and fighting to stay sane amidst devastating news.

This story combined two of my favorite things - ghosts and history. The way McGarry was able to blend the two amidst the main characters hardships was truly amazing.

When we first meet Veronica, we're introduced to this quirky, ghost loving teenager, who seems to have the world on shoulders yet doesn't want to let anyone in to alleviate her worries. She doesn't want to feel "stuck" with everyone worrying about her and worrying about her brain tumor. Especially her dad. Then we meet Sawyer, who is viewed as this typical high school jock who has the world bowing down at his feet. Yet, in reality he's someone who just doesn't know where he stands in the world. He doesn't know how to "deal" with the pressure of his family, school, struggling with dyslexia... and uses these struggles to fuel his addiction - one that he knows will kill him, but continues on to feed the need for a good rush. Especially when it comes to his family - between the issues with his parents divorce, his mom, and having to be in a way a father figure to his little sister, These pressures fuel his desire. Throughout the novel as we watch these two characters interact we see a whole different side to both, Sawyer understands that he can't be the world to everyone, that he needs to put himself first. .

Beyond understanding the characters, we're given a story within a story. McGarry uses the diary of Evelyn Bellak to bring about a way to understand what it's like for a teenager stuck in a hospital trying to hopefully overcome TB, but takes each day at a time. Continuously upbeat, despite the circumstances. We're introduced to Evelyn through Sawyer when he finds the book mysteriously placed in a room in the downstairs house that his family is renting from Veronica's dad. Sawyer becomes entranced with Evelyn's story, reading little bits at a time wherever he goes. These little bits of her diary also fuel the ideas of whats going on as Veronica and Sawyer work together to understand the idea of ghosts. Despite their views of each other, both characters are pushed together to complete a senior thesis. Using Veronicas idea of wanting to prove that ghosts are real and there. We have Veronica who wholly believes in ghosts and wants to prove to her dad before she dies that they are real - so that he'll never be alone, he'll know that she's always there - along with her mom. Then we have Sawyer who doesn't believe, even after reading Evelyn's diary, his sisters visions of ghosts, and visiting places that are haunted. He continues to be skeptical even to the end - which is contributed to the fact of him still battling the fight with addiction and his fight to continue to save Veronica as she battles her brain tumor.

However, despite his scepticism - he learns that everyone has a residual haunting. And that is one thing he'll stand by.

I'm never disappointed in Katie McGarry's books and this one just proves that statement is even more true. Another fantastic book in her collection. And silly me, didn't realize before that Veronica is our V from Only a Breath Apart. As soon as I saw Jesse's and Scarlett's names it clicked. I was like duh, no wonder she is familiar! And it made me wish I re-read Only a Breath Apart so that I remembered everything about V. But it was okay, because as I read things started clicking. So Veronica and Sawyer's story, just wow! So many emotions with this one. Lot of difficult topics were tackled in this book and McGarry did it beautifully. Really, really fantastic. With Veronica's brain tumor and feeling like Death wherever she went and Sawyer's adrenaline addiction, you would think that throwing them together would immediately equal disaster. It didn't. And I was glad. I was glad to see that instead of their flaws and issues hurting one another and making a relationship between them impossible, it really had them acknowledging their issues and supporting one another. There wasn't hostility toward one another or throwing their issues in the other's face to harm them. It was, this is what is should be when two people love one another and only want to help the other, even when your own life is collapsing. And those two specific issues were just pieces of many others that are tackled in their stories. I was hooked from the moment I started it. I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to know how they would make it through their story, what their outcome would be, and how would they get there. If you love her other books, this one needs to be on your TBR list. It doesn't disappoint. I loved Veronica and Sawyer's story and like all good books, I'm sad to see it over.

Well written and easy to read, the characters were very likeable! It was so easy to be pulled into their world. The main character Veronica has a brain tumour which she watched her mom die from a few years before. Sawyer comes from a broken family and ends up having to parent his youngest sister a lot. They are an unusual match but that makes their story so intriguing to read!

Thank you very much for providing me with a digital copy to review!
I feel very blessed to have read this book early, but also to have just read it in general.

I've attached my review for Goodreads which will go into a lot more detail with why I loved this book so much and why it means the world to me.

But, basically, I loved Veronica and Sawyer's relationship. It was pure and I loved how they fought for each other no matter what. They both go through so much but they're also both fearless and such strong characters.

V always kept true to herself and didn't stop because some people picked on her. I admired this about her.
Sawyer loved fiercely and deeply. He was always there for those whom he loved the most no matter what.

Three things that I love and immediately am sold on when books include them are:
1. Ghosts
2. Strong sibling/father relationships
3. Alcoholic parent

And this story had all three of these things which is why it's so important to me.

Without too much detail, I have always believed in ghosts and am fascinated by the possibility of them existing. I have two sisters whom I'm close with, one more than the other however. She's my best friend and the rare moments we get to talk and see each other are ones that I definitely cherish. I'm also very close with my dad, he's also my best friend. And, not to get too deep, but my mom struggles with alcohol. She has for over 30 years and it broke my heart with what Sawyer went through and that's why I fell deeply for him.

I also loved the friendships and the development they went through, and how in the end they all put their differences aside and came to care for one another.

And, lastly, I appreciated the authors note at the end and I'm very glad to have read it!

I can't wait for this story to be officially born and brought into this world. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people who will enjoy this story. I know I sure did!

Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to read this beautifully written story!

Wow. This book has all the emotions and I felt every one as I read it. I don't want to give away the story but this book is so different from what I thought it was going to be about and at the end. This book deals with some difficult and sad issues and a few times I had to put it down, but I was always drawn back to it. Katie does an amazing job of drawing you into her characters and care about them. I loved how these characters were total opposites, but ended up sharing many of the same problems. This was a different story from Katie, but it was well worth the read.

I have long been a fan of this author. I love the small town setting and the references to the state and areas I know. This latest story is a worthy addition to this series. Veronica is living with a life altering condition. Sawyer is the popular jock dealing with demons of his own. These two agree to work on a senior project together and their different worlds collide. As they investigate local hauntings and ghost, to determine if they are real, they end up redefining their pasts and their future. I love how well researched this story appears to be. Ms. McGarry includes enough factual details that a big chicken like me began to feel uneasy, especially since I recognized some of the places she included. This story also reflects the valuable message that you need to look beyond outward behaviors and rumors before you pass judgement on someone else. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves real world problems surrounded in mystery with hidden kernels of truth throughout! Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I've read a ton of Katie McGarry's books and this one is definitely my favorite! Loved the characters, loved the story line, loved everything about it. I was so happy to have the connections to Only A Breath Apart. And the hauntings/ghost hunting aspect of this story just made it even more my style. I'd recommend it to any teen looking for a Contemporary Romance with serious issues mixed in.

What can I say another amazing book by Katie McGarry but again I'm not surprised. Echoes Between Us had me hooked from the start and I couldn't stop reading. Katie's stories and characters get better with ever new book she writes. Veronica and Sawyer are great characters that you can't help but fall in love with and with every new chapter you get pulled into their world. I already ordered a copy for my library and can't wait till 2020 to share it.
