Great representation for LGBT+, Asian, and Hard of Hearing folks. Positive relationships, challenging topics addressed quickly and effectively and extremely well paced story for all of this. Love the colorful art and how endearing all of the characters' relationships are.

I wanted to thank Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to review this wonderfully heartwarming story.

For starters, this book had wonderful representation for hard of hearing and LGBTQ rep. Nova is hard of hearing and wears a hearing aid. Tam is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns. They are referred to as such for the duration of the story as well. Nova had two grandmothers who were in a relationship and this wasn’t questioned and there was no homophobia in this respect, or any other.

The friendship between Tam and Nova is pure and wonderful. Their relationships is even more so. I fell in love with their characters and found myself rooting for them and crying with them as well.

The art in this story is GORGEOUS. The drawings are cute and it’s very colorful and pleasing to the eye. I found it very engaging and it kept me wanting more. Most of the ARC I received had color but the last few chapters were not, but either way, the art style still kept me engaged.

The plot felt high stakes and engaging as well. It felt believable and I loved the characters and how they stood up for each other.

I highly recommend this story to anyone and everyone who wants a heartwarming coming of age story about queer witches set in New England in the months of autumn.

This graphic novel was really cute and a lot of fun! I loved the artwork and the fall / witchy vibe it had. I also really loved the wide range of diversity present in the story. However, the overall plot fell a bit flat for me, and I found the relationship between the main characters happened too quickly for my liking. I feel like we were told by other characters that Nova and Tam were headed toward a romantic relationship before the characters themselves showed romantic interest in each other, which was kind of jarring. There were a also few things about the plot I wished were fleshed out more, like how Tam spent an entire year as a wolf and about where other witches like Nova go for their apprenticeships.

I enjoyed this graphic novel overall despite its flaws and will definitely check out anything else the authors put out in the future!

This book was absolutely adorable and fun to read. I love all the different representation in this book. We have Nova who is hearing challenged, but do not let that stop her from becoming a badass witch. Her love interest is a gender non-conforming werewolf named Tam who goes by them/they, and Nova's best friend is a bit on the fluffy side. I believe her grandmothers are gay and in a very loving relationship, but that's not really discussed but is open to interpretation. They sleep in the same bed, so you take it as you will. The illustrations are gorgeous, and I'm pretty certain Wendy Xu did the art for The Prince and The Dressmaker which is also a must read. This is absolutely a must-read when it comes out. Thanks, NetGalley for allowing me to read it before it's released.

This was a super quick cozy queer read and the perfect beginning to my fall tbr. Nova and Tam are such an adorable coupling, and Nova's grandma's are such great maternal figures. The art work was beautiful, especially when it came to the character design. I also loved the disability rep with Nova's hearing aids. This review is kind-of all over the place, but I hope your take away is to go read this lovely book that made me feel like I was receiving cuddles the whole time I was reading it. I can't wait to read more from Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu in the future.

I really enjoyed this comic. The main characters are really cool and together they're beyond adorable.
I mean, I'll never complain about more material about queer wichtes and werewolves, just keep 'em coming.

All the side characters in this story are very likable too, from the witch grandma couple (being together, doing magic, owning a bookshop with a magical section and having a lovely home and loving family - they are honestly living the life!) to the loud and nerdy and supportive human bff who makes a great contrast with her blunt disapproval of magic, but still battles evil to help her besties special someone.

Also I really feel like going out to the woods to spot some pretty animal-plant-spirits.

This graphic novel was the absolute cutest I’ve ever read! I loved how it wasn’t super hard to follow. Honestly I wasn’t expecting to see a diverse character and what was I surprised by, exactly that! I feel like I need a sequel to this ASAP even though I’m unsure if there are plans for one.

Delightful take on magic and triumph. Cheerfully LGBT friendly and disability supportive as well. Great art and story line. I could not stop reading until the end. A real must for children with hearing impairments.

Super cute graphic novel full of diverse representation! Tam is introduced with they/them pronouns right off the bat, there are several LGBTQ+ relationships, Nova is hard of hearing and visibly wears hearing aids, and the traditions of the mid-autumn festival are a central part of the story. This was a really fun read with witches and werewolves and a cute romance, and I found Tam's puns hilarious. It's a contemporary blend of technology and magic and I recommend it to anyone who's into graphic novels! The story is short and sweet and a great pick-me-up to read any time.

Very nice illustrations, loved the style and colors.
Fun LGBTQ romance with witches and shapeshifter. Will be a nice addition to any graphic novel collection.

An absolutely delightful and heart warming story. The characters are believable even with the strong magical elements. This is a family that would be wonderful to spent time with and the charming bookstore is so inviting. Mooncakes is a graphic novel to revisit often. Nova and Tam are a sweet love story and the grandmas are both people you'll want to know in real life. One of my favorite graphic novels this year!

4.5⭐
I received an early copy from Netgalley for review.

I absolutely loved this, it was cute and action-packed - not generally descriptions that I would use on the same book, but it works in this case.

The characters are well fleshed out and the romance is absolutely adorable. I love the diversity within this book and the illustrations are absolutely stunning!

I would highly recommend this graphic novel! Definitely a must-read!!

This was my first graphic novel. I thought the story and art was very cute, but I’m not sure if this format is for me. The story seemed short and choppy, which may be norm for graphic novels. However, I loved the witchy, family storyline. I also liked how the main character was shown to have a “disability” that didn’t disable her at all. I did find the use of the plural pronoun, “they”, to represent one person a little confusing. I understand why it was written that way, but I found it disrupted the flow of my reading. I enjoyed the story enough to want to give graphic novels another try.

I've seen Mooncakes pop up on my GRs so much so I was so happy to get the chance to read it here!
And it certainly lived up to the hype - it is ADORABLE!
I realised recently that I haven’t really read a lot of lesbian books so this was great for me with not just the 2 main characters but also Nova’s 2 grandmas! It's also great having a book that includes a main character with hearing aids & the other main character using they/them pronouns.
Everything was drawn really well (ALL THE MAGICAL CREATURES WERE THE BEST THINGS EVER) and the story flowed well - what more could you ask for? 😊

Nova Huang isn't your typical teen witch. She knows more about magic than most witches her age, and spends her time helping out in her grandma's book shop, lending out spell books and investigating supernatural occurrences in their small New England town. One of these occurrences, a rumor of a massive white wolf, leads her out to the woods one night where she comes across the last person she expected to see: her childhood friend, Tam, fighting a demon horse. As a great big wolf. Hunted by dark forces, Tam and Nova ban together and find their feelings for one another might just be the spark their magics were missing. This was such an adorably charming story. In one word: magical. It was a heart-warming and cozy coming-of-age story, and Nova and Tam were so precious together. Everything from the artwork to the story was just so enjoyable.

Mooncakes was circulating around a lot lately on booktube and I wanted to see what it was all about. For one, I loved that it was fast and easy to get through. And despite having an overall cute artwork, I found the plot to be lacking somehow. The characters also felt younger than their targeted age but their interactions were still adorable and heart warming that it doesn't matter as much. I would recommend this to any young teen out there.

Nova is a hearing-impaired witch. Tam is a transgender wolf. Someone in town has caused a demon to possess a horse that is destroying the town. Returning after years away, Tam is the only one who can stop it. Haunted by their past, Tam is unsure who to trust about their secret. Using Nova and her Nanas’ magic, can the four figure out a way to help Tam to defeat the demon and confront their past? What is Tam hiding? The characters are likable, unique, engaging, and experience growth. The supporting family characters add humor and amusement to lighten the dark elements of the story. The plot is simplistic and the villain is predictable, but works well in graphic novel format. The illustrations are bright, give the story depth and enchantment. Fans of fantasy, adventure, and a little bit of romance will enjoy reading this book.

I first want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing this eARC.

I absolutely loved this graphic novel! It was filled with so much love, acceptance, and a little bit (a lot) of magic! I absolutely adored the artwork and the story captivated me instantly. I would highly recommend this to others.
