Highly recommend reading the first 5 books in the series before hopping into this one. While fun, seasonal, and cozy, I felt like I really needed to play catch up while reading in order to love the characters. Fantastic writing though and plan to read the rest of the series, I just felt a little lost and wanted to say it is not a stand alone.

This is book 6 in the Wiccan Wheel Mystery series. Kelli's law practice has been doing well in Edendale and she's ready to celebrate Mabon and thank the Goddess for her blessings. When she's asked to help settle an estate for a wealthy local there is trouble at every turn. A missing heiress, a missing will and a lot of missing art. I enjoy this series, it's light and easy to read. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a lovely seasonal cozy full of secrets, magic, and an eclectic group of liars.  I always love an old house with secrets of its own and this mansion had plenty of surprises up its sleeve.  Keli is not only a smart lawyer, but she is also Wiccan who has solved mysteries in the past. I don't know much about the Wiccan religion and I love how pieces of it were not only included, but vital to solving the mystery.  It is definitely something I am intrigued to learn more about and I love how it really shaped Keli as character.  The fact that this mystery takes place around the Wiccan Autumn Equinox just really adds to this mysterious atmosphere.

In a house full of selfish people who are clearly holding secrets, someone must know what happened to Elaine the night of her death.  Things are definitely not as they seem and when it is discovered that she was murdered and there might be a missing will, Keli is hired by her friend to find the will and she unknowingly enters an ever growing mystery. Things are disappearing - and they aren't the only things. Elaine's granddaughter had disappeared many years ago and Keli and her boyfriend Wes are determined to find her.  I loved the quirky and suspicious characters and how the mystery just kept spiraling and morphing with so many different pieces.  I had no idea of the truth and I loved the way things were revealed to us.  Not only was Keli an interesting and wonderful character, her friends around her also each added something fun to following the story.

Though this is the first book I've read in this story, it definitely will not be my last.  Thank you to the publishers for a free digital copy of this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

I'm not going to lie, reading has probably been on the bottom of my to-do list lately...because of Pokemon! But when I had a minute or two I continued this story, and I really did enjoy this gem of a cozy mystery. There were times I felt a little lost with the characters as this was the sixth book, but essentially it is a book you can just pick up and read and understand. Keli is a great character, and her version of witchcraft was very refreshing for me. She has a fantastic network of characters around her, and I particularly enjoyed Wes, Farrah and Crenshaw and their input into the sotry. Arlen was a latecomer but I can see him flourishing later on with more character/story development.

There was layers to this mystery, and time had passed between them. Some things I really didn't believe (like Lana not realizing about the note) but essentially it was a good mystery and everything worked out.

Definitely need to check out the other books. Five stars!

Keli has finally settled into her new business, she knows she needs an assistant but getting that sorted needs to take a back seat when her ex colleague and friend Crenshaw asks for her help and says she will be paid for it. They need to track down the heir to a local estate and this gets Keli's boyfriends interest as he went to school with her and feels bad that they lost contact. A problem arises when it seems there could be another, later will, and also there is a possibility that the client was sent to her eternal rest just a little too early!

Now Keli is staying in the mansion with a group of people who could be murderers, any one associated with her is getting their car tyres slashed, on the plus side her friend Farrah has managed to arrange job interviews for the office assistant post ... err but her crazy stalker she calls the "Giftster" has arranged somehow for an open interview that day claiming she will be paying a huge salary! Luckily one of the proper applicants is actually someone she has done legal work for, he is also a Pagan (more Shamanic than herself) and fully qualified, soon after she takes him on though she needs to use his Shaman skills to help the original case as theft and murder seems to be the dish of the day!

Jennifer David Hesse Interview 103019

If two suspects each provide an alibi for the other,
shouldn’t that cancel out both alibis?
Jennifer David Hesse, Autumn Alibi, Kindle Loc. 1645

After a hectic year, Edindale, Illinois, attorney Keli Milanni is ready to welcome autumn by counting her many blessings. But a case of murder could cause her to fall behind . . .

Keli is hoping that Mabon, the Wiccan Autumn Equinox, will bring balance back into her life. But it’s death that comes calling when she’s asked to consult on an estate case. Recently passed, Elaine Turnbull left everything, including her valuable art and antiques collection, to her granddaughter, Lana. But Lana has been missing for years, ever since a tragedy tore her family apart. Also missing may be Elaine’s most recent will. Then there’s the not-so-small detail that Elaine’s death by natural causes may not have been so natural after all . . .

With the help of her boyfriend Wes, who knew Lana in high school, Keli starts digging into Elaine’s past—and her journals. Soon she discovers that everyone, from Elaine’s caretaker to her curator, had a motive for murder—along with a seemingly rock-solid alibi. Between missing people, missing documents, a string of vandalism against her friends, and the sense she’s being stalked, Keli is feeling a disturbing chill. Now not even her Wiccan protection rituals may save her from a killer with a cold heart that’s far from grateful . . .

I so wish I had found this series when it started. Autumn Alibi is the sixth in the Wiccan Wheel Mystery series written by lawyer Jennifer David Hesse. Jennifer’s main character, Keli Milanni, is a Wiccan witch and a lawyer. She’s a good person who has unconventional beliefs and sticks by them even when others scoff.

What attracted me to this book? Keli has a reverence for nature that is appealing. Her boyfriend, Wes, is irreverent in ways other than nature, funny, and supportive of Keli. He’s a wonderful contrast to Keli, but at the same time complementary. A photo journalist, he competes to solve a part of her mystery, winning or losing household chores as prize. Her best friend, Farrah, is also a lawyer, but she doesn’t practice—she sells law practice software to firms—and is bored, making her the perfect partner in crime solving.

Please welcome Jennifer David Hesse to WWK. E. B. Davis

What is a Wiccan Wheel?

“Wiccan Wheel” refers to the Wheel of the Year. This is the yearly cycle of eight seasonal holidays observed by modern-day Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans. It consists of the two solstices and two equinoxes, as well as the “cross-quarter” fire festivals in between—including Beltane (also known as May Day) and Samhain (which is celebrated around Halloween). Honoring these holidays is a way to connect with spirit and nature, to be present, and to have fun!

Edindale, IL, is in the southern part of the state. Is it real or based on a real place?

Edindale is a fictional town, but the Shawnee National Forest (where some of the action occurs) is real. Also, since Edindale is a small college town, a county seat, and a place with abundant trees, I’ve had real towns in mind at various times, including Charleston, Urbana, and Carbondale—all in Illinois.

We know Wes is from Edindale, but where is Keli from?

Earlier books mention that Keli is from a small town in Nebraska. She came to Edindale for law school and decided to stay—partly because she felt a connection to the area. Years earlier, her aunt Josephine ran away to live on a commune in Edindale (until she disappeared under mysterious circumstances).

As a practicing Wiccan, Keli performs rituals worshiping nature in her backyard. But since Keli and Wes live in a townhouse community, she is often apprehensive of others observing her. How does Keli feel about others knowing about her beliefs?

Like a lot of real-life Wiccans, Keli is guarded when it comes to sharing her personal beliefs. There is a lot of misunderstanding about non-mainstream religions, so Keli is careful about who she tells. She doesn’t want people to fear or judge her—or think any less of her—because of her spiritual practices.

How does Wes feel about Keli being a practicing Wiccan?

Wes is cool with it. 🙂

Keli knows something in her past is coming for her. How does she know this?

Keli is observant (a useful skill for both a lawyer and a detective), and the impending danger was foreshadowed by earlier events. But she also has a keen sense of intuition. Sometimes she just has a feeling about things...

Crenshaw represents the late Elaine Turnbull, a wealthy art and theater patron. Why does he ask Keli to work for Elaine’s estate?

Crenshaw realizes he’s faced with a unique situation and could use some assistance. In fact, Crenshaw says it best himself when he tells Keli: “I was hoping you could, I don’t know, poke around a bit. Talk to people. Do whatever it is you do that results in your stumbling upon the solution to a random mystery now and then.”

Why do Keli and Crenshaw work better together now that she’s established her own practice than when they worked at the same law firm?

Now that they aren’t in the same firm, they are no longer competing for cases or partnership status. But they’ve also both grown and evolved. Keli is a little more open, and Crenshaw is a little (just a little!) less uptight.

What are the qualities in Wes that attract Keli?

In many ways, Wes is a good balance for Keli. Where she tends to be more serious, he’s more laid back. Of course, she was first attracted to his slightly rough, “rock star” appearance. 🙂 But it was his kindness and curiosity that held her interest.

In the past, how has Keli found lost things?

As a Wiccan, Keli casts spells for many purposes. In Book 1, Midsummer Night’s Mischief, she used a finding spell to help guide her to a missing heirloom. But she also follows clues and talks to suspects, like all good amateur detectives.

Keli and Farrah drink beer. Are younger people into microbrews or is this a Midwestern attribute?

LOL. I suppose craft brews might appeal more to younger people, but Keli is not a connoisseur. She’ll drink different beverages at different times, whether it’s a glass of wine with dinner, a cold beer with friends, or a nice cup of tea with Mila.

Mila, a Wiccan High Priestess, wears a shag. Are shags coming back in style or does this style complement her Wiccan position?

The shag haircut may indeed be coming back in style, though some versions of it never really went away. As a breezy, casual look, it suits Mila’s bohemian aesthetic.

Mila suggests Keli try Astral Projection. What is this and does Keli have success?

Astral projection, or astral travel, is a type of out-of-body experience similar to lucid dreaming. Readers will have to check out the book to find out if Keli is successful or not. 🙂

Why does Farrah keep trying to guess Crenshaw’s middle name?

Farrah is a flirt by nature. And the more she’s around Crenshaw, the more intrigued by him she becomes.

Who is the Giftster? Why is Keli afraid to sleep in her own house?

“The Giftster” is a nickname Keli gave to an anonymous trickster she first encounters in Book 5, May Day Murder. She tries to take away some of this person’s power over her by using the silly name. But the Giftster always seems to be one step ahead, which puts Keli on edge.

How is the Autumn Equinox related to balance?

Astronomically speaking, the earth experiences approximately the same amount of daylight as darkness on each equinox. (The word “equinox” is Latin for equal night.) The Autumn Equinox also marks a transition period from one season to the next. Wiccans often look to nature for spiritual lessons and guidance, so it makes sense to contemplate balance at this time of year.

In Wicca, does every season feature one of nature’s gifts to epitomize it, such as apples do for autumn?

Great question! Wiccans definitely appreciate nature’s gifts in all seasons, and there’s an abundance to choose from in each one. Some of the Wiccan Wheel Mysteries book covers feature some of these symbols, such as evergreens for Yule and flowers and butterflies for Beltane.

At first, I thought Celia might be a cool and comic character, but she turned out to be anything but. Why does Keli think she may have wanted Elaine dead?

Like all the suspects, there’s more to Celia than meets the eye. She has a history with the Turnbull family that Keli learns over the course of the book.

Keli seems like a traditional woman. She dreams of a family of her own, a more committed relationship with Wes, but then there is the Wiccan aspect of her life that is so unconventional. Who is Keli?

In Book 1, we learn that Keli is a Gemini, the sign of the twins, signifying duality—which definitely fits her personality. But in reality, I think most humans are complex characters with many sides. Keli is a sincere, imperfect, good-hearted woman, just doing her best like the rest of us.

Why would there be an oyster shell pathway in a place so far from the ocean?
LOL. While landscaping supply companies sell oyster shells throughout the country, it can definitely get pricy. This just goes to show how wealthy the Turnbulls are.

What is a Jeep convertible? Is it just a Jeep with its roof off? On all Jeep Wranglers, the top and doors come off. But why does Farrah have them off when it’s cold?

Yep! Farrah likes to feel the wind in her hair. (But she does put the top on when it gets too cold.)

Who is Arlen Prince and what is a necromancer?

In Book 5, Arlen is a new client of Keli’s, and he crops up in her life again in Book 6. While he isn’t Wiccan, he is Pagan, practicing in a shamanistic tradition. Necromancy is the magical practice of communicating with the dead, usually to ask questions or predict the future. Arlen calls upon animal spirits for divination and spellwork.

What is a Triple Goddess and why does Keli have a tattoo of it on her wrist?

The Triple Goddess is an archetype in Wicca that honors the three aspects of the Divine Feminine: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. (Or, as some more modern practitioners interpret it: Student, Creator, and Teacher.) The symbol of the Triple Goddess (a waxing moon, full moon, and waning moon) reminds Keli of the cyclical nature of life, as well as the fact that all phases of life have worth and beauty.

What does Keli mean when she thinks, I’m never really alone?

Keli is lucky enough to have close friends and loved ones, but she’s really talking about Spirit here (aka God, Goddess, or the Universe.) As a Wiccan, she feels a close connection with Divine Mother.

What’s next for Keli?

Plenty of adventures await Keli, including celebrations of two more holidays on the wheel of the year. However, she may be taking a slight break from mystery-solving as her creator (Yours Truly) works on some other projects. Without a crystal ball, it’s hard to say what the future holds!

Princess Fuzzypants here: Leading up to Halloween there seems to be quite a few witchy cozies to read. Keli, is a Wiccan, and while she does her incantations, she is not a spell casting witch. In fact, as a lawyer, that might come in handy. It certainly will not hurt as she is engaged to help her former colleague sort through the estate of a very wealthy woman. Her late husband was a collector and there are all sorts of treasures in the mansion once they figure out what is there. But it seems some things may be misplaced and others may be hidden.
In the misplaced category is the woman’s granddaughter who is also the heir. She disappeared shortly after her father’s death and she needs to be found before the estate can be settled. Under the hidden category is a possible new holographic will. But that is not all that is in a state of confusion. It is going to take all of Keli’s powers to unravel the mystery, including the one of who killed the deceased.
I enjoy this series with its understated “magic”. The characters are realistic and believable and the mystery is engaging without being over the top. I particularly liked the process of finding her assistant. It makes for a light and enjoyable read.
Four purrs and two paws up.

Autumn Alibi is book six in a series of cozy mysteries set around the eight Wiccan sabbats (festivals), as found in the Wheel of the Year. The protagonist, Keli Milanni, is an attorney who is also Wiccan, which adds a spiritual touch to this book. When a wealthy estate owner dies, it’s up to Keli and her friends to find the missing will and the missing heir — and to find the killer, when it is made apparent that the death wasn’t as natural as it initially seemed…

This was a good book but, coming into it at this point, I found some of the characters a bit confusing — mainly who was unique to this book and who is recurring. This is more on me as the reader and less on the author, I think, as I came into this series with this title and perhaps should have started with the first book, which I believe is called Midsummer Night’s Mischief. However, I found Autumn Alibi to be a light read, definitely living up to the genre of “cozy mystery”, and it had plenty of plot twists and turns to keep the reader interested.

I liked how Wicca was woven into the storyline, and how the various spells and symbolisms were portrayed. It was definitely handled with care and precision, and I think it will endear Wicca to a lot of readers who maybe know very little if anything about the religion. Romance and humour also feature, but there were a few scenes where I felt the humour was a bit stretched or forced, and I felt myself jolted out of the story.

The characters were well-drawn and the plot is intriguing. The subplot around Keli’s stalker added just the right amount of unsettling atmosphere, and this worked really well with the backdrop of the Autumn Equinox. However, overall I felt that the author was trying to fit too much into the story in too small a timescale and so it was a bit scattered in places. Despite this it is a cozy mystery and is an entertaining read for a quiet evening at home.

I received an e-ARC from the publisher, Kensington Books, through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

After a hectic year, Keli Milanni is ready to welcome in the autumn season. She is hoping that the Mabon, Wiccan Autumnal Equinox, will bring her balance. But when her former colleague is handling a probate case of the recently deceased Elaine Turnbull he calls in Keli for help. This case is anything but the balance for Keli. is looking for. Elaine’s will leaves everything to her granddaughter who has been missing for years. Some of Elaine’s friends insist that Elaine wrote a new will before she passed. With the missing heires and possible missing will Elaine also enlists her boyfriend, Wes, into the investigation. The more they look into things the more questions they find.

I really enjoyed this book. I have read one other book in this series and each book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book. Keli is a likable protagonist, she is smart and personable. Like Keli the rest of the characters are well-developed. The storyline moved at a quick pace, however, there are several twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing. I look forward to catching up on this series and future books.

I voluntarily agreed to read a copy of this book supplied by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

Autumn, Marbon, and Murder
This book is a cross between cozy mystery, new age mysticism, and age-old witchery. It is a good mystery with a great and twisty plot. There are many moving pieces, lots of motives and many suspects. While the ending was surprising, it could have packed a bigger punch. I did enjoy the book. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

4.5 Stars

This is the sixth book in the A Wiccan Wheel Mystery series by Jennifer David Hesse.

I was fascinated from the word go. Keli has a complex relationship between her spirituality and her job as a lawyer. It’s not easy mixing the two since there are so many judgements based on her beliefs. Her idea of religion is different than normal folks. And different isn’t wrong. It’s just… different. With all the LGBTQ acceptance these days, I’m surprised there is not more acceptance of Wicca, mediums, tarot readers and the like.

Keli is contracted to find the missing will of Elaine Turnbull. So she must stay in Elaine’s house and ferret around for facts and clues. Once she finds something juicy, the next day it is gone, taken from her room. Room blessings and spells abound in this book. It is actually all very cool. At least to me. I thought the spells were very well done.

This is pretty much a locked room mystery since most of the residents aren’t out of the house during a good part of it. Since this is my first foray into the Wiccan Wheel mysteries, I wasn’t certain who were main characters and recurring characters and who were not. So, it make the entire search that much more difficult for me. I have to admit I had no idea who the culprit was.

While in the midst of reading this, I realized that Jennifer David Hesse is from very close to my own hometown in Southern Illinois. You don’t see a lot of books set in this area. So, I was particularly pleased about that fact. Can’t wait to read more and do an entire background search into the character by reading all the previous five books. Excited.

If you love cozy, do check this one out. Don’t hesitate. It will be a fun ride for you. It was an awesome ride for me.

Highly recommended.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

Autumn Alibi: The Wiccan Wheel Series
By Jennifer David Hesse
Kensington
October 2019

Review by Cynthia Chow

October may be the season of Halloween festivities, but it also happens to be when Wiccans celebrate their Mabon “Thanksgiving” to the earth. Now that Keli Milanni has left her conservative Southern Illinois law firm to open her own private practice, she feels more secure as she recites a spell giving thanks to the Goddess of Nature. Still, her intuition is tingling as it warns of something ominous on the forefront, and it once again proves right when she acquires a new client. Knowing that his former coworker has built something of a reputation successfully tracking down clues, heirlooms, and the occasional murderer, Crenshaw Davenport the Third wants to hire Keli as a consultant to help him locate a missing heir. Fifteen years ago a teenaged Lana Turnbull ran away from home, and the estate of the late Elaine Turnbull remains in flux with the absence of her granddaughter and sole heir. Elaine’s former caretaker and companion Ray Amberly asserts that Elaine had completed a holographic will to replace the current one, but neither witnesses nor evidence can be found. The case becomes more complicated when Elaine’s doctor reports that something is sketchy about her medications, with suspicion falling on one of the many staff and extended family members staying within the Edindale mansion.

When her boyfriend Wes Callahan is called away to Chicago for a journalism conference, Keli takes up Crenshaw’s offer to stay in the Turnbull home and assist in searching amidst the many books, artwork, and papers for clues to both Lana’s whereabouts and the possible new will. Advice from her Wiccan friends have Keli attempting to astral project her way closer to Elaine’s presence, but it is ultimately more practical efforts to track down alibis and witnesses that lead her closer to a satisfying conclusion. Disrupting her investigations are the continual pranks by a mysterious Giftster, who not only vandalizes her friends’ cars, he throws a rather hilarious wrench in Keli’s attempts to hire an assistant. Keli’s bestie Farrah Anderson is once again in the midst of breaking hearts and juggling suitors, leaving her more than happy to keep Keli company in what is becoming an increasingly dangerous mansion.

This is an enthralling examination of Wiccan practices that perfectly blends together with a classic locked-room mystery. The gothic tale of a wealthy matron, multiple wills, eccentric servants, shady groundskeeper, and numerous possible heirs will appeal to the fans of complex, Agatha Christie-like novels, but it is is made unique by the incorporation of spellwork and pagan rituals. Farrah delights in sparring with a stuffy and pretentious Crenshaw, and along with Wes and Keli they are a delightful and grin-inducing investigative team. Celebrate the Autumn Equinox with this enjoyable mystery full of romance, witty banter, legal intrigue, and Wiccan spellcasting.

I have been following this series as the protagonist has quite an interesting edge as an alternative lawyer. In this book I really felt Keli came into her own and that we also got to see a little more character development for other reoccurring characters.

Another nice title and I will continue to read this series.

"Autumn Alibi" is the 6th book in the "Wiccan Wheel Mystery" Series by Jennifer David Hesse. I own the first 3 books in the series but haven't got around to reading them, with that said I was able to read this as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed this story protagonist Keli is a likable, intelligent woman who is an attorney and also Wiccan. All of the characters in the book are well developed and interesting.

The story was well paced, and I found I couldn’t put the book down. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. The description of Mabon the Wiccan Autumn Equinix was great and I learnt something new which is always a bonus.

I look forward to reading the next installment in this series

My thoughts
I want to say thanks to Steeped In Books ( a booktuber I watch) for talking about this one , that I went running to Netgalley as well as to the Kensington page there to see if they had it still and as soon as I say it I picked it up , in fact if I remember right its because of her that I picked up one other book they had, and other thing that mad me pick it up was the series title : Wicca Wheel Mystery series as well as the cover ,it just say fall is here. Another thing is even though I haven't read the others in this series but after reading this one I do , I found myself enjoying it a lot , and the characters there was times they had me smiling at what was going on. One thing I loved was how the main character Lana was a lawyer but she practice Wicca as well and that the author showed that Wicca was not only for blessing your surroundings but that it was all so the re blessing of the land and that it could also be used for protection . And the story itself was a well-crafted plot, with several suspects who are all suspicious, a few twists and turns and a finale that allowed all of the threads/clues to come together it was your playing the game Clue where your trying to figure out who doing it and why , which made this book even more fun to read, with that said I want to thank Netgalley for letting me read and review it exchange for my honest opinion.

Autumn Alibi was a fun witchy cosy mystery and a perfect autumn read due to the focus on Mabon (and autumn in general). The characters are well developed, the plot was interesting and the book in general has so many layers that it's actually fun to read.
