I was sucked into this book from the very beginning. I was invested in the mystery and I just couldn’t put it down. I loved that people weren’t forthcoming with the questions Aubrey had about her family.

The tone the author set was so deep and real. It reminded me of a dark country lane , when you’re driving in the dead of night with only your headlights for company. I spent the entire book feeling very uneasy, like something bad was about to happen at any moment, of not trusting anything the characters were saying and picking apart everything that seemed odd or creepy.

Although most of the book is told in the present day I loved the visits back to the past. It gave me clearer insight into who these people were and what had happened in Desolate Ridge.

Overall, a great creepy mystery perfect for Autumn and the build up to Halloween.

I loved every minute of this book! Normally I do not find myself interested in supernatural stories but once I read the description for this book, I found it intriguing and was so glad to be approved to read the ARC. This was a fast pace supernatural-mystery with so many twists, turns and mystery that your head will spin! (In a good way!) I was pulled in right from the start and couldn't out this book down. Told through the POVs if Aubrey and the women if Desolate Ridge from each generation since 1819, you truly receive such a sense of the background and of the present day. I found Aubrey to be extremely likable and a very strong character. Hank was also a character you just couldn't help but love, always standing by Aubrey no matter what. This was beautifully written with such detail that you felt that you were expierencing everything that Aburey was. At first I was unsure how I felt about about the ending but once I thought about about it (it only took me 2 minutes), I realized that it did really make perfect sense and was quite beautiful. Creepy and unpredictable, this book was extremely enjoyable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I enjoyed the premise of this story and loved the chapters of history and Aubrey's ancestry. I enjoyed flipping back and forth between the past, the present, and the connections that Aubrey experienced. I do enjoy novels that start with family trees!

This would have been a higher rating if there had been a little more character development with Aubrey. Her childhood was referenced as hard due to being abandoned and being raised in the foster care system, but to what extent, I'm not sure - her story started when she inherited Desolate Ridge. I would have liked to care more about her as a person as things were happening to her and she changed.

I would recommend this book to those looking for a quick, haunted read. It would pair well with Fall and some pumpkin beer! :) Some of the events at the end I did not see coming which solidified this as a 3 for me.
