This book was received as an ARC from VanitaBooks in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Loved is an understatement with how I feel about this book. The idioms were so brilliantly drawn and executed (my favorite was look what the cat dragged in by the way). I know our community especially the schools and our ESL Tutors will find this book useful, clever, and fascinating to read. I can see the smiles on everyone's face and giggles from all the children. I know this book will be circulated very well.

We will consider adding this title to our JFiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Special thanks to NetGalley for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review

I loved this! I love idioms, and to see art to go along with them (I specifically loved the one for wild goose chase) was really enjoyable. I also like that while the art matched the saying very specifically, it also explained what the idioms mean. so not only is it a fun silly book for kids, but it's kind of educational in a way too when you consider there were a lot of idioms that many people say in day to day life as it is

Litercurious Partial Review for Birds of A feather

CONCLUSION

No doubt, Birds of a Feather will be well received and loved by children and adults. Many years after a child has grown out of this book, they will still hold fond memories of the enjoyment of reading and learning about idioms. I struggle to remember a better tool for demystifying and teaching a child the complexities of language.

Despite being no spring chicken, I was totally taken with Oelschlager’s fabulously fun trek into the world of idioms. Birds of a Feather is the perfect synergy of concept and illustration which combine to excite the eye and engage the mind. Vibrantly colorful, beautifully drawn, and entertaining throughout, this book is a joy to any young child and the perfect edition to their growing library. Reading this book is like having your cake and eating it too; educational and entertaining.

Our team has decided to award Birds of a Feather our highest rating so far this year for a children’s book.

These are some of the most gorgeous illustrations I have ever seen. I say that for a lot of children's books, but seriously, these are just heart-warming. Fun, funny, impactful, eye-catching.

Each idiom is perfectly illustrated and I bet the little ones can have the time of their lives with this book.

When you want to learn the definition of the idiom and read the example provided, you flip the book over and discover the meaning. This gives you a chance to first guess what the meaning is, and have a conversation, instead of immediately discussing the solution. This is fantastic for engaging a child.

I have to say the 'a wild goose chase' is one of my favourite ones, it made me laugh out loud!

At the very end, you can expect a page dedicate to what idioms are and why it's important to learn them in order to understand a language.

Parents, teachers, family members and friends will love this one, as it covers some of the most important and widely used idioms and sets a good base for understanding what idioms are to begin with.

How I wish I had read a linguistically important piece such as Vanita Oelschlager's "Birds of a Feather" when I was first learning to read! Robin Hagen's exquisite illustrations accompany a playful journey through over 15 American English idioms. I love the way Oelschlager and Hagen creatively introduce "outside the box" thinking which is part of a critical foundation to fully understanding, using and having FUN with language. Highly recommended! Thank you to the author, illustrator, and NetGalley for a secure digital review copy. This is my honest review.

Reading to a child from an early age is very important for their development, future academic, and even business success. Research shows that children who are being exposed to reading from an early age develop their cognitive abilities faster, show more interest in the environment, communicate better, learn faster, and this is directly related to their future success. Also, research shows that books greatly contribute to faster and more successful adoption and building of vocabulary in children as well as successful expression.
And yes, it is true that children start the process of language acquisition and learning from birth, but what do we do with more complex language structures? How to bring them closer to children in the most effective way?
The answer to that is hidden in the books like this one, which in a very interesting and witty way opens the world of idioms to children. The beautiful and colorful illustrations will immediately grab the attention of your little ones, while the upside-down explanation greatly forces children to focus and explore the illustration paying closer attention to details, thus providing them with an opportunity to be able to connect the image and the meaning of the words much more easily.
In addition to amazing illustrations and simple explanations, this book offers us the opportunity to encourage our little ones to give their ideas and examples of the use of idioms that are so effectively displayed in this beautiful and sweet picture book. I would have to agree that the portrayal of the police force is a bit offensive, but I would also have to say that children will not perceive it as such.
And to say that the book will be an excellent teaching aid for ESL learners is a simple understatement. The lively illustrations plus the simple, yet effective definitions will be of great value to every child learning English as a second language.
Yes, I am delighted by this engaging and fun storybook, filled with quirky illustrations and commonly used idioms and sayings. I would have to say that it will make an excellent addition to any preschool or family library.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. This children’s book is quite cute! I really enjoyed the illustrations — they brought the storyline right to life.

The book contains clever and funny drawings to teach children about idioms.with upside-down writing in small letters to explain the meaning. This allows the child to re-examine the drawings multiple times. However, it is disappointing that there were only 20 pages. Although there are thousands of idioms, there could have been a few more examples, that the children could use in daily situations like a piece of cake or like riding a bike.

This is an adorable book about idioms. I love the fact that flamingos are featured, as they are my daughter's favorite. The illustrations in this book were lovely.

**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**

A cute idea with nice illustrations. A good starter book for kids to teach them about idioms, but I would have liked a little more. I definitely think the definition page for idioms should be at the front of the book, not the back.

It loses a star for making the "Wild Goose Chase" police officers pigs, as that terminology could be seen as incredibly offensive, especially in today's political environment.

I received an electronic copy from VanitaBooks, LLC through NetGalley.
Oelschlager takes readers through a variety of idioms illustrated as they sound. She provides the real definition and a sample sentence in upside down small print on each page. Readers can offer their own ideas on the meaning before reading the real definitions. Great read aloud. The pictures are brightly colored and show the way each idiom would look at face value. Definition of an idiom included at the end.
