Beautifully illustrated by Mike Blanc, Porcupette Finds a Family tells the story of a porcupette whose mother doesn't come home one day and finds love with a new family.

I touching tale of the confusion of a young porcupette seemingly abandoned by their mother and unsure whether to trust the unconditional love of another family. Another brilliant book from Vanita Oelschalger.

Porcupine finds a family is a story about a young porcupine with abandonment issues. He's too scared to let anyone close to him out of fear that they won't love him. This book started out like an informative book that quickly changed to a narrative. The root of porcupette's abandonment is really sad, but the story turns around quickly when he learns to let others love him.

Porcupette Finds a Family by Vanita Oelschlager is a sweet children’s book about a baby porcupine who is adopted into a family of bears after his mom goes missing. He creates a bit of trouble with the bears to test if they really want him in their family, and the end result is very sweet.

The text is a little dry and simplistic, but accessible for young kids who might be better able to relate to it. It definitely made it an easy story to follow. The illustrations are very beautiful and calming. Overall, the message about unconditional love in adoption is really sweet and will be helpful for young children in a similar situation.

Thank you Vanita Books and NetGalley for this free copy in return for an honest review. I love this book. The story is so touching and the illustrations are perfect. A small porcupine loses its mother and searches and finds a bear who is also nursing her own two cubs. The bear accepts the porcupine but despite that the porcupine has all these doubts and worries which are finally resolved beautifully. Great for children and adults to understand the loss of parents, children's feelings and the the love and issues with adoption. Great book to read to your little ones!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations in this one were simple, but very cute. I enjoyed the style.

This story touches on some deep topics usually not discussed with kids (even though they should be) and it was clear that the author took a lot of care with how they crafted the narrative and text. I think this is a good book to use with kids who've lost a parent or end up in foster care. It also shows that not all family is blood. Sometimes our chosen family creates a stronger bond and that's just as valid as any other type of family or love. Mother Bear's unconditional love really got to me and I ended up shedding a few tears.

Overall, happy I read this one. Would recommend.

Porcupette Finds A Family was a sad and also informative book about adoption. I adored the illustration and the writing style. The powerful message behind this book can be useful for adopted children who possibly don't perceive themselves worthy of love and also the families adopting these children who are not familiar with the thoughts and reactions of a little child who has been abandoned, it may give them a new perspective on why sometimes adopted children are afraid and how that fear reflects on their behavior. I loved the book and recommend it to all families adopting a child.

{My thoughts}
Porcupette is a cute but sad picture book told in the first person by the porcupette about adoption , insecurity , love and loss written by Vanita Oelschlager and illustrated by Mike Blanc.

I think this is a wonderful book to read to adopted children. Children dealing with abandonment issues,
The story was heartbreaking and emotional, but passed on a powerful message that shows them they can truly be loved and wanted despite the fact they may be different from their new family. And it does have a very happy ending.

The colorful illustrations also really help to bring the story to life.

Porcupette (a baby porcupine) is alone and scared. He is afraid that no one loves him because his mommy went away one day to get some food and never came back. We never hear just what did happen to the mommy porcupine.

😭This had me crying like a baby as I read this to my 5 year old adopted daughter:😭

"I began to think that maybe she left me for something I did wrong. Or maybe she left me because of something she saw that was unlovable about me."

Cold, hungry and terrified, he finally ventures out himself and crawls into a cave with a Mother Bear and her cubs. He wants to have an attachment to the bear family he finds, but is afraid his “bear” mother and “bear” brother and sister will leave him too because there is something wrong with him. This causes him to act out his fears in some very not so nice ways . However, with the understanding and help of Mother Bear, Porcupette finally accepts that he is truly loved and wanted.

As heartbreaking as the story is I think it would be a great book for so many. Parents who adopted to perhaps understand why a child may be lashing out or acting out. Children suffering with abandonment issues, as well as parents , grandparents who care for a child suffering from abandonment issues for whatever reason it may be.
I think every adoption should come with this book. Especially Children who are adopted from Foster care.

Thank you Vanita Oelschlager for writing about such a hard subject in a way that it helps both parents and children.

I want to give a very heartfelt Thank you to Vanita Oelschlager, Vanita Books, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this beautiful heartwarming story to my 5 year old adopted daughter . I truly appreciate it!

This was a cute story about how sometimes life changes unexpectedly and you need to adjust. In the book, porcupette was all alone and found a new family but was afraid to mess it up and because of this fear, he kept trying to ruin his relationship with his new bear family until he realized they loved him and wanted him there. I do wish we found out what happened to his mother. It was a cute book with good illustrations. I read it to my ten month old son.

Really cute book with adorable illustrations! I think the story was great, it's nice to show kids that you can fit in and be loved even if you look a little different. I can really see this being a hit with children in foster homes or who have been adopted. I think it really explains how they feel and that they can still be loved.

Adorable story of loss and acceptance. A poor porcupine baby loses his mother, but eventually finds a home with an unlikely family who accepts him no matter what. Sweet story told through digitally painted illustrations, which I don't normally like, but these were wonderful.

Aw this book has such a sweet message about adoption. The short story was definitely a heart tugger and had the readers attention early on. I plan on reading this to my adoptive son, and think he too will see similarities with Porcupette. Heartwarming children's book.

Porcupette Finds a Family is a lovely story about Porcupette who feels he isn't loved after his mother leaves and he sets off to find another family before challenging them because of his thoughts that he is unlovable. The pictures in the book are gorgeous and so sweet to see Porcupette and the bears become such a lovely family. The story is good but it is a lot of text and does seem to drag on a little, I think it would keep the children's attention more if it was shorter. A lovely read showing family that we have enjoyed.

Delightful! Sweet little porcupette has lost his mother and finds a new one in a family of bears. This story speaks loudly about the emotions a child in foster care would go through. Great story that rugs at your heartstrings.

Fostering and Adoption are subjects very close to my heart. Porcupette Finds a Family by Vanita Oelschlager is a beautifully illustrated book about a baby porcupine (called Porcupette) that lost her mother and searches for a new family. But new families can be scary so she acts out in her fear. Her new bear mother though shows her the love that is needed to bring her back to her new family. This is a great book to share with your biological children to explain the concept of fostering and adopting as well as with foster and adopted children to help them handle the challenges in their own lives.

I was adopted at birth, so adoption is a subject close to my heart. So when I saw this book I was excited to see how the author handled the subject and the feelings that adoptees go through.

The story starts out with Porcupette who is a baby porcupine describing his life and how he grew up with a loving mother. One day Porcupette’s mother goes out to find food for herself and never returns. Porcupette goes on to describe his fear of his mother not returning and his search for her. When he stumbles upon a mother bear and her two cubs, he tries to pretend to be a bear and joins the family. The story continues with Porcupette living with his new bear family and dealing with the loss of his mother and the fear of losing his new bear family. It also deals with Porcupette’s prickly behavior towards his new family, from the fear of loss and abandonment.

I believe the author did a fabulous job of dealing with a subject that is very common today. This would be a wonderful book to read to children who may be in foster care, in a new adopted home or even with the loss of one parent through death or divorce. The illustrations were beautifully done and were a perfect complement to the story. Highly recommend!

Porcupette is a picture book written by Vanita Oelschlager and illustrated by Mike Blanc. Porcupette (a baby porcupine) is “adopted” by a Momma after losing his mother. Momma bear treats Porcupette as she does her own two cubs, but the poor young porcupine is so frightened of being abandoned that he acts out in fear. Great message of unconditional love with beautiful illustrations.
