Well, that was just cute. I enjoyed the little poem and the artwork that went along with the story. I feel like it would be a stunning book for anyone to own in person and think the bright colors would entice younger minds who are not quite at reading level.

Funny poems that kids will enjoy coupled with drawings that will remind adults of the newspaper funny pages as a kid. A great read for when spring is almost here!

This book is a wonderful way to introduce students to different poets and to be able to view the different structures that are used to convey their thoughts.

What a great way to introduce children to poetry. I love how this book takes excerpts from classic poems and incorporates them into the story of a girl called Ivy who is living in the grey of winter waiting for spring to come. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and will capture the imagination of any child. A thoroughly delightful book.

4 stars.
At first I was put off from reading this. Im not a poetry person. But I really like this author so I thought id give it a go. Boy was I surprised when I opened it up and started reading. I was instantly captured by the illustrations and the writing style and story from page 1! Its a beautiful book with equally beautiful pictures. Its the story of a little girl and of winter turning into spring and the anticipation of waiting for that change to happen. The little girl describs what she sees around her during winter and each page it slowly gets closer to being spring. Then you see the tiny hint of spring coming through and before you know it, its arrived. Its an adorable book and while it is written in a poetic way, its not heavy with it, which I persoanlly prefer and I think it makes it easier for children to understand awell. Definitely recommend.

Yes, yes, yes! This is such an incredible read! Beautifully illustrated, there wasn't anything about this book I didn't like. The blending of different lines from other writers was done so well and really brought something special to this narrative.
Short, stunning and a must-read.

Poetry is a tremendous vehicle for reading aloud to little ones, and captivating them with the lyrical feel and sound of words long before they can read for themselves. This beautifully illustrated, uniquely written book tells a charming seasonal story via the medium of poetry. It includes the author's cleverly constructed verse, whereby her own words are seamlessly mixed with lines from the work of traditional writers and poets.

It opens with a young girl, Ivy, caught in the depths of winter, pining for warmer days, so she can enjoy playing outside. As the scenes unfold, the narrative gathers pace and darkness gives way to light and bright in the illustrations, thus gently teaching the listening and reading along child about the changes that occur in the natural world between winter and spring.

I read this aloud as you would with a child younger than the designated age group of 5-8 and it didn't seem dissonant to me. Rather, it struck me as a carefully put together poetic journey, with the kind of rhythm and rhyme that was eminently suitable for the topic on the page.

A helpful bibliography highlights precisely which writer/poet's words and work were used and threaded through the narrative. It would make an excellent teaching resource for parents to encourage children keen to discover more of the poets’ work, and an aid in appreciating the chosen poems in their totality. A lovely book to enjoy with my toddler grandson now and for years to come!

I wasn't able to noticed that Vanita Oelschlager is the author of this book; that is why I didn't anticipate that the poem is for kids. Nonetheless, I still liked the poem written by Oelschlager and the cute illustrations done by Kristin Blackwood. The bibliography is where I like best because there are poems written related to spring by some of the famous poets such as the likes of Dickens, E.e. Cummings, Walt Whitman and Robin Browning.

A beautiful illustrated book for younger readers and a great way to introduce poetry to them. Love the added poetry at the end. You get one main one with illustration all the way through then get a few inspirational ones that brought life to the main one from other poets and authors.
All proceeds go to muscular sclerosis.

I loved the semplicity of this book. I think taking pieces of antique poetry and turning them into a "story" is such a brilliant idea! Also Ivy is so adorable and the drawings are stunning

Ivy in Bloom: The Poetry of Spring from Great Poets and Writers from the Past, is an absolute pleasure to experience. Readers will delight in Kristen Blackwood's charming illustrations, both gray and colorful - as they read original verses from Vanita Oelschlager along with excerpts from famous poems in history.

The story blends a narrative about young Ivy, a girl who eagerly awaits the colors and adventures of springtime, with the beautiful language of poets such as Dickinson, Wordsworth, Shelley, Whitman, & Frost. Children and adults alike will be drawn to the nostalgia and dreamlike quality in this celebration of the seasons.

Ivy in Bloom is a joyful experience reminding us that change is inevitable, childhood and the world around us is magical, and poetry comes from both nature and human experience. The final pages of the book include brief biographies of each historical poet, plus the full text of each poem that an excerpt was drawn from. Not only could this story, then, serve as a child's first experience with poetry, but also provides them with a point of reference for who wrote these poems, when and where.

My hope is that when finishing a poetry book like this one, students will also want to find out why writers write poetry, and delve deeper into understanding questions like: What makes a metaphor powerful? How is a rhyme musical? Why is a verse funny or joyful or sad? Even the youngest child can answer questions about how a poem made them feel. In order to understand poetry we must experience it, the younger the better - and Ivy in Bloom would make a wonderful addition to any home or school library.

I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations and the poem itself. Ivy waiting for Spring is a short read but it is a whimsical depiction of how each season makes you feel. Snippets of other poems from famous writers like DIckens, e.e. cummings, Bryant was a unique touch. These other poems are also featured at the end of the book which was a great addition. Overall Ivy in Bloom will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations are gorgeous, and I did like the poetry.

My main problem is that it ends kind of abruptly? I expected it to go around to winter again but maybe there weren't poems that continued around they enjoyed?

Either way - I would recommend this to show to kids, an introduction to poetry. I love poetry, but I don't read enough of it. Highly recommended checking out for kids - boys, girls, all.

What a lovely poetry book this is. This book takes lines from well known poems and puts them together to produce a wonderful poem about spring. I love the cover illustration, so wonderfully bright and vibrant.
Poetry from the likes of Longfellow, Dickinson and Wordsworth ( along with others) are interlinked in this adventure - seen through Ivy's point of view.
A great introduction to children's poetry !
