I received an ARC of this book from Ylva Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to like this book because of the diverse characters and a superhero story. Sadly, I DNF'd a couple chapters in. The storyline and characters just didn't catch my interest, but that might have been my fault, I didn't realize this was the second book in the series—which would explain a lot of confusion I had with the characters. I'll have to try reading the first book of the series, Shattered in order to determine if I should continue on with the series.

DNF'd literally a chapter in, the descriptions were way too lengthy and felt off. I'm sure this book is great but it could use more editing.

This book was AMAZING!! I did not want it to end. It tells the story of Mai, a meta human. She is not as powerful as Superman, but not as weak as humans. She rebels against those whose care for her is questionable. She is a superhero by night and a professor by day. Her latest assignment by the Meta Justice Board, the Enforcers, threatens to tear apart her world and family. Throw in the steamy professor Xochitl Benedict and this is a super hero, mystery romance.

I look forward to more of Mercy's story and reading more from this author.

I was provided a ebook of this novel for a honest review.

In my opinion, this is a good but not great read.

Pros: The descriptions of Mercy's heroing were vivid and well written, the characters were strong and the relationships interesting. I found myself liking Mai, and learning more about her story.

As a side note, I think the description is a bit TOO lengthy and spoilerish. A much shorter description would have increased the drama in the book itself.

Cons: this is a fairly short work, closer to a novella. The formatting of the ebook also looked wonky, with broken up sentences and even page numbers in the middle of pages. Sadly, the book also telegraphs who the killer is reasonably early.

Basically, I'd read this casually but probably wouldn't add it to my library.

I had previously accidentally read the sequel to this book - A Lover's Mercy - before reading this one and let me tell you, it makes SO much more sense this way! I think I would have easily given the other book four stars as well if only I had been smart enough to read them in the right order! Even though I technically knew the outcome of this story I didn't feel like it diminished the plot in any way. The story is more about Mai's journey as a character than doing much actual 'detective' work to figure out who the murderer is anyway. Definitely a really interesting world with great characters, and who doesn't love lesbian superheroes!
