Alright this was stunning!!

Thank you so much to the publisher for giving an arc in order for an honest review.

This was amazing. I'm so in love with the art style of this. The impact this book has because of the art style is amazing!! I enjoyed the story, I mean most people know the story since it's about Jesus, however I think it's so well written.

I would 100% recommend this one to someone else interested since it was such a quick read but also a very fun read!

So, disclaimer that I'm starting off this review slightly biased. I'm a huge fan of Dahm's work, ever since I read Rice Boy in basically one sitting when I was in high school. Dahm has such a distinct style. His use of black and white, along with alien inhuman creature designs, is masterful.

I don't claim to fully understand this book, with all it's religious and political implications. Still, the artwork is masterful and it's always interesting to see reinterpretations of Jesus. I highly recommend it for the art alone. (I give it 4 stars because yeah apparently I'm not smart enough to decipher the story, but that's on me, not the book.)

I received a free electronic copy of this book. Thank you author, publisher and netgalley.
The artwork and story work very well together, they convey the sense of dread of the nightmarish situation the story tells very cohesively.

Before I was a pagan, back when I was fascinated with the mythology of the Christian religion, I poured over things like Dante's Inferno, and Pilgram's Progress to understand the way people thought about the stories of the Bible.

And I would say, that this is an interesting take on the life and teachings of Jesus, as well as his decent into hell after his crucifixion. This is a very gentle man, trying to be a teacher, which I've always thought he probably was.

The decent into hell was, shall we say, not what I expected, and I found that part hard to read, because there was so much symbolism.

But all and all, a different take on the mythology that Christianity is built its rock on.

Your milage may vary.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

The Harrowing of Hell presents what happened after Christ's crucifixion and his visit to Hell. I, unfortunately, I couldn't get into this one.

In “The Harrowing of Hell,” Evan Dahm reenvisions Christ’s descent into hell after the Crucifixion. While there are no biblical records of the fabled “descent into hell,” Dahm does an excellent job capturing the thought and feeling behind the myth. The dread of the pit that Dahm captures in his artwork is fantastic. He easily draws his reader into the story as if the reader was walking (or being carried) with Christ toward the throne of Satan.

The additional language added to scenes such as Christ before Pilot, or the conversation between Jesus and the disciples draws away from the Biblical depictions of the events or even waters down the relationship that the disciples had with Jesus. I don’t feel that the representation of the Messiah is necessarily on point. Dahm makes Jesus out to be much meeker than Scripture captures.

Overall, I think this is a great graphic novel that captures the love and grace behinds the sacrifice of Christ and the myth of the harrowing of hell.
