Jack Salvo is back in the third installment in his series, The Middle Sister by Jesse Miles. Jack Salvo, a private detective in LA, is hired by a very rich woman to find her middle daughter, Lillie, who has been missing for a week. Lillie’s sisters are willing to help, and Jack follows the clues. Unfortunately, early on in the novel, Lillie is found dead, most likely of a drug overdose, and Jack works to find who is to blame before reporting to Lillie’s mother. The way that Jack works the case makes sense, and it won’t surprise readers when he solves it.

Miles is an excellent writer, and the novel is well organized and easy to follow. There are enough ups and downs to keep any reader enthralled. From the start, it will keep the interest of thriller aficionados, and some of the scenarios will keep them on the edge of their seats. Most readers will like Jack Salvo, and his character is well-developed. The supporting characters are also well-developed and they seem like they could be real people. This novel will be an incentive to read the previous novels, since most will appreciate the fact that these novels are gritty, fast moving, and gripping. Like all good thriller novels, the dénouement is surprising and doesn’t come until the very end.

These novels are recommended for those who want a new, fun series. The Middle Sister is excellent, and will inspire readers to go back and read the previous novels.

The Middle Sister
By Jesse Miles

4 stars

Truthfully, I almost didn’t pick up the title just from the cover. I still cringe when I look at the cover and wonder why the author & publisher went with the chosen cover.

However, once I got past the cover, I found an enthralling murder mystery. A private detective story that hooks the reader from the first word.

With a few twists and turns, and a cast of likely suspects, PI Jack Sal has his work cut out for him digging to the bottom of this mystery.

Jack Salvo teaches philosophy one night a week at a community college, but he pays his bills by working as an L.A. private detective. A wealthy woman hires him to find her wayward daughter Lillie, who has been missing for a week. Salvo figures the girl is probably hiding out with her friends. All he has to do is interview the friends, bust their stories, and deduce the missing brat’s location. Salvo soon learns that her “friends” are somewhat parasitical. When he finds Lillie, she is hosting different kinds of parasites — the little ones that help rid the world of rotting corpses. Salvo is then pulled into a maze of murder, arson, and blackmail. During his high-speed-run down L.A.’s fast lane, he spars with grifters and gangsters, dodges the cops, and digs up a dark, deadly family secret.

A great read, once you get into he storyline.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I enjoyed it very much as it has everything a person could want in a good mystery. including a family secret. I highly recommend this book. I would like to thank Net Galley for a copy of this book for me to read and that I voluntarily reviewed.

Jack Salvo, professor and private investigator. Jack is hired by a mother to help find her missing middle daughter. She has been gone longer than normal and no one has seen her. Jack is on the case. With due diligence and attention to detail he finds more evidence than he expected. Not only that bodies are being found everywhere. Unfortunately one of them is the missing daughter he has been looking for. He know that something is fishy about the deaths and starts connecting the dots.
Written in the style of a true detective novel. Smart, sexy, intriguing.

First book I’ve read by the author, but looking forward to more already. The action was non-stop as Jack Salvo starts digging in his search, the hole gets deeper with constant turns (in the plot.) Very entertaining.
