The second in the series, following the initial book - The Burial Society - which I read and encourage you to read first if you are new to this series. Knowing the premise of the first book enhances the enjoyment of the second and in some instances,, The Empty Bed, only makes sense after reading the first., This seemed a stronger storyline, make that four storylines, than the first book and I am really enjoying this specialist organization run by women helping others tell their truths and then protecting them from the repercussions. We really could use Catherine in real life. Actually, she may exist and this is autobiographical. Hope so. It’ should to be a movie, either way. .

I picked this up and couldn't put it down. What a twisty, fun book! Apparently this is a sequel, of which I wasn't aware, but I was able to very quickly discern the purpose of The Burial Society. The book is told by several different narrators, usually in third person (with the exception of Catherine, which is in first person). There are also varying locales, time zones, and even a little timeline jumping... that can sometimes make for a confusing read, but it worked BEAUTIFULLY in this case. I hope there will be future books like this, about The Burial Society. I, for one, cannot WAIT to see where the author takes these amazing, developed characters. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher- Absolutely a 5 star read.

This book left me feeling dazed and confused until I got to the end and discovered that it is the second in a series about a group that goes by the name of The Burial Society. Knowing this helped address a lot of my confusion, but it also compels me to recommend not reading The Empty Bed until after you have read The Burial Society. The Burial Society is apparently a mysterious group that helps people in need to disappear in order to keep them safe. In The Empty Bed there are three storylines: one about a family being protected by Catherine (apparently, head of the Society), a second about the disappearance of a rich man's wife and child being investigated by an FBI agent named Magali, and a third about a woman who goes missing in Hong Kong while on vacation with her husband. The latter storyline is the primary plotline.

The book was well written and interesting, but without knowing more about the Burial Society, it was impossible to become immersed. I'm sure I'd have a different opinion if I had read the two novels in order of publication, but it is what it is.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for providing an electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Y'all just this cover alone made me want to dive into this book!! Seriously it was amazing and Nina Sadowsky did an excellent job at making these characters come to life. The storyline truly was an awesome one! Go ahead and read it!

I really loved this book! I was so confused by the two stories going on, though they came satisfyingly together at the end. Nina is a new author to me. I liked the pace of the story.

3 for neutral. I was really excited for this one, but I tried reading it a few times and just never could get into it. Then I found out it was a series, which I think is the problem. I’ll be updating once I’m able to read the first book, because I know it will help me get into this one, or hope that’s the problem.

Initially, I was not sure if I was going to like this book. The author starts out the book by introducing three separate storylines that do not seem to have any connection, which makes the book feel very disjointed. The main storyline, the disappearance of Eva Lombard, has only a tenuous connection to the other storylines, as some of the characters in the other storylines -- Catherine, Stephanie/Stevie, Jake/John -- help find and rescue her. However, the other storylines, especially involving FBI agent Magali (Maggie) Guzman, are there to set-up a future book. If/when the next book in the series comes out and I read it, I will appreciate this plot development. While there are some books where introducing characters and plotlines for future books works well within the overall storyline of the book, the intermittent switches to other storylines in this book felt disruptive. Also, Eva Lombard, the woman who goes missing and is the main subject of the book, is not a very likable character. However, the storyline involving the disappearance of Eva Lombard and the search to find her was well done. I thought the characters were creative and well-developed. I liked the evolution of Stephanie and Jake as a team. There were some good twists and surprises in the story. Overall, a decent read.

I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.

I have not read the first book in this series and I think if I had I would have enjoyed this one more. I did not fully engage with the characters.Overall though, there was a good storyline and it was interesting.
Many thanks to Ballantine Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I did not read the first book of this series, which could definitely have impacted my enjoyment of this read. I think that Nina Sadowsky was trying to tell several story lines concurrently, which left me feeling confused and also frustrated as I was intent on reading about Peter and Eva. That story line was plot driven and enjoyable to read. I have to admit it was so unbelievable at times though that it also detracted from the plot. The characters were certainly not likable although I did enjoy the young female working for Catherine. Many thanks to Nina Ballantine Books, and NetGalley for affording me the opportunity to read this ARC.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.... I loved this book.

Catherine's has an admirable. mission - she and her team keep people safe for the greater good.

They all have back stories that knit them closely into loyalty, respect and self examination.

I'd love to learn more about the three stories covered in this book, I'd like to see how the characters move onto new challenges.

The ending is open to exactly that - more adventures for Catherine's, a strong, determined fiercely loyal woman with an oddly satisfying moral compass.

Riveting. Nina Sadowsky’s The Empty Bed kept me on my toes and made me keep turning the page to find out what happened next. This is the second book in The Burial Society series. I have not actually read the first one but there was no need. The novel holds its own. There was never one moment when I knew what the outcome was going to be and that is what I like about a mystery! I will be going back and reading the first Burial Society. Highly recommend.

Wowza! I could not put this read down! It is told from multiple sides of the story with different people. At first, I found myself wondering how all of these stories were going to intertwine and meet up, but I didn't have to wait for long. Eva feels her marriage and happiness slipping away, as her husband works his way up an investment firm. He tries to reach out by scheduling a surprise anniversary trip to Paris, which actually turns into Hong Kong. All the while, Eva has the feeling of someone following her, but her husband thinks she is paranoid. Eva winds up going missing, and a whole trail of clues come unwinding. Meanwhile, the burial society is keeping a family safe, but gets called in to work the Lombard case as well. Quickly all the connections are made, and the story unfolds. Now I find myself needing to read more about this Burial Society! Such a great mystery to follow along with.

Book #2 in the Burial Society series was just as good as the first! I enjoyed catching back up with Catherine and her work helping domestic violence victims. I read this book in one day as I couldn't put it down. I hope there are many stories with Catherine and the Burial Society. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.

Thank you NetGalley and Random House for the ARC of the empty bed. When I read this book and saw it was about a husband in wife who are in a foreign country and the wife goes missing I had to read it. That is like my worst nightmare to have something like that happen in a foreign country. This was a good book although it is two stories so you do have to make sure you are paying good attention. I really enjoyed this ride.

Thank you to Netgalley and Random House/Ballantine for the ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.

This is the second book in the Burial Society series but it’s not so intertwined with the first that if you start here you’ll be lost. That said, there is SOME background in the first book that I think makes this book more enjoyable.

There are really two different stories in this book but I think that fleshed put a little bit more they both could’ve been their own book. The main plot about a woman missing in Hong Kong was very entertaining and if it had been the only plot I probably would’ve given this book a higher rating. The subplot about a NYC FBI officer working a missing persons case seemed out of place in this book. It didn’t really tie in to the story until the very end and even then it seemed like an after though. That said, I think that whole storyline could’ve been a really good book on its own.

Other than that the writing is pretty basic and the plots are somewhat predictable but for me that made it enjoyable. Not every book needs to be a complex psychological thriller with a million different twists.

Overall, this is a solid 3 star book. Pair it with a rainy Fall day and a cup of coffee and I think you’ll enjoy it.

This novel continues the story of the Burial Squad. In spite of the name the organization helps people that need it to disappear. The reasons may be many but all have the need in common to not be found by their enemies that wish them harm.
The story opens in London where Peter Lombard has moved with his wife Eva in order to begin work with a major British corporation. In his first vacation Peter takes his wife to Hong Kong where she has lived previously for a short time. Upon arrival Eva goes missing with no trace. Desperate to find her Peter's boss is contacted and he in turn contacts an old girlfriend of his - Catherine who is the founder and supervisor of the Burial Squad. Catherine sends two of her operatives to Hong Kong to search for Eva while she goes to Mexico City on another matter. There is also a third situation that requires the Squad's attention. All three matters are looked into and the constant shifting between them does cause more than a little confusion.
The searches are described along with personal data of most of the characters including Catherine which does take away from the plot and spoils what should be an interesting novel. While I enjoyed the concept and the described work of the Squad it did leave me with no real interest in picking up another book in the series.

As I read this book, I was confused from the beginning as to the role of most of the characters and how they played into the title of the book, The Empty Bed. The premise of the book is about a man who travels with his wife to Hong Kong and wakes up to find that she has disappeared. As he struggles to find his wife he finds himself in some unexplainable and dangerous situations. The book jumps from situation to situation and from country to country and all the while I kept hoping to figure out why there were so many different people and stories that seem to be unrelated. In the end, everything comes together but, for this reader, it was a huge disappointment. There was too much character development and not enough plot development which made the book difficult to follow and to enjoy.
