A bit haavier than the past books, but just as entertaining and marvelous. Bear was an amazingly human character in a story that explores the darkest side of human nature and how traditions can be the base for tyrany. This fantasy series is aiming higher with each book!

Thank you to Lion Forge Magnetic Press for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘The Great Man: The Ogre Gods Book 3’, written by Hubert and illustrated by Bertrand Gatignol, in exchange for an honest review.

From publisher: “A direct continuation of PETIT and HALF-BLOOD, this third book in the series of standalone tales explores another part of the dark, fairy tale world created by author Hubert and illustrator Bertrand Gatignol, this time focusing on those humans who live outside the kingdom amidst the dangerous surrounding wilderness.”

It combines graphic novel panels with interludes of illustrated text around the Tale of the Bear.

I should have paid more attention to this being the third in their ‘Ogre Gods’ series rather than assuming that I could gain a sense of the world depicted and the ongoing storyline. Instead I found myself lost and unable to really connect to the story and characters.

However, the artwork was very good and applaud it for that. Even though in black and white it expressed well the violence of the fight and battle scenes.

So I would say that even if the stories are separate to each other that this is more suited for those who have followed the series to date or who plan to.

I loved the formatting of this book. You don’t have just a regular graphic novel, but a compilation of different parts to add enhancement to your reading. Beautifully done illustrations along with pages that look like the intro to a fairy tale book throughout this story combined with the graphic novel spinning the tale of Bear and Petit.

This series is getting better with each volume. This third story focuses on a rebel general named Bear while pulling the first two books together. Petit is on the run from the chancellor. He has overthrown the giants and is looking to install Petit as a puppet king. Petit is on the run with the rebels. I really liked the character of Bear. I was even tempted to read the prose backstory that frequently interrupts the book. The art is incredibly detailed. The black and white art brings to mind Gerhard's backgrounds in Cerebus.

I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I think this was my favourite novel in the series so far.
Petit’s Story continues as he is being hunted down by the chamberlain after the death of the giants. Petit is saved in an altercation by Bear, a very interesting character on his own and a man not of this realm. We learn more about Bear, his connection to the Chamberlain, the resistance, and the more human aspect of the fallout of the ogre gods not being alive anymore.
I’m looking forward to the next one.

Who is the great man I thought when I read the title ”The Ogre Gods” book 3? Will you discover him? This dark fantasy is about the folk who live outside the kingdom and in the wilderness. Lours is an aging leader of a rebel clan. The Chamberlain from the kingdom and ogre gods who live up high do whatever they please to the traditions and land of the clan. It is when Lours decides to help a wounded giant that he and the rebel clan will have a surprise. The giant may also have a surprise himself. What could that be?

This is a dark fantasy in guise of a fairy tale? The illustrations are perfect for this story. It is not for children under 12 years of age to read. I’m glad I got to read it but would had like to been able to read book one.

Another engaging and compelling read in this series. I am interested in seeing where this story will take us in the end. I also enjoyed the added lore and fantastical creatures to the world building. I'm excited to see what book 4 has in store!
