I was not familiar with Celia Sanchez Manduley before I read this book. I really enjoyed reading this biography. The author was given access to her private papers and interviewed many who knew her. This is a comprehensive look at one of the few woman in the Castro government. The book is well written and easy to read. There are also lots of photographs. Enjoy

I was unable to access this title due to its format. Because of this I am giving the book five stars as it would be unfair to give it anything less

This book was given to me through Netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

Learning about the Cuban Revolution has always intrigued me. When I learned about this book, I knew I had to read it, especially since it has a feminist approach to tell the story of a revolutionary icon. This book is one I wished I had encountered during my undergraduate years of college! It is educational and the methods used by the author to tell Manduley’s story could have been helpful to use in research papers.

This book was written to portray a feminist story, or feminist biography, of a Cuban Revolutionary woman, Celia Sanchez Manduley. Often times, when learning about the Cuban Revolution, we only hear about Che Guevara or Fidel Castro. It is rare to see a prominent portrayal of a female revolutionary in the Cuban Revolution. Sippal has done extensive research to show a different side of Manduley’s narrative and not just that of the master narrative that many scholars focus on. She also uses illustrations to back up her storyline, which made it a more interesting read.

The book is short, but contains important information that I have not read before, such as the “New Woman” idea. I enjoyed the learning experience it gave me. I do recommend it to others who want to learn about Manduley and even on just the Cuban Revolution. There’s a lot to learn still from just Manduley’s narrative alone. I can't wait to buy my own copy to annotate the heck out of it!
