This is a critical book for all who are nearing Social Security to read. You have a wealth of information here that you cannot find online with Social Security. Gone are the days when we could ask questions at the local office or even reach someone on the phone. These days you have to educate yourself before you arrive and be informed ahead of time to make the most prudent decision for your benefits. I highly recommend this book for all who are retirement age and are as lost as the rest of us as to the process. The author breaks down the pros and cons here of when to apply and how it will impact your future. A critically important read. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. I found this immensely helpful .

Social Security in 30 Minutes, Volume 1: Retirement Benefits is a great resource. For those of us who work, “retirement” has always been the end goal. For some it is farther away than others. However, one thing that is pointed out in the book and that is important to know, is that retirement is a process. You don’t just stop working one day and start receiving Social Security benefits. There is a method to the madness, and it is necessary to have a plan in place to ensure that you are able to take full advantage of not only your Social Security benefits but also any monies that have been set aside by other means for retirement.

This book is a definite eye-opener. It is not the be all, end all and does not provide ALL the necessary information in detail. It does, however, give you resources and guides to assist you in the process. The information includes basics such as how Social Security is funded, how to go about preparing to get benefits and how this may affect family members, as well as what happens if you work and collect benefits. This is a good starting point so that you have an idea of what is coming and how to prepare for it. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to review this book.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Good advice on how to start saving up for retirement and not just relying on your social security to cover your income.

Parts were facts and figures and that was not so interesting to me but if you are a numbers person, you will love it.

I appreciate all contact information and information about using 401K, IRA's towards retirement income.

This book provides a concise and clear explanation of Social Security benefits. It includes information on who is eligible, how benefits are calculated, where the money comes from, when it is best to apply, benefits for spouses and children and more. To make things easy to understand, the author gives case examples in making her points.

Regular readers of my blog know that I spend a lot of time reading mysteries, fiction, children's lit and many things that are not like this book. Nonetheless, I rate this book highly for those who are contemplating applying for Social Security in the U.S.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read in exchange for an honest review.

If you are peering around the corner at an upcoming retirement, the world of Social Security can appear to be confusing and daunting. I had heard enough to know that I didn’t understand enough to make an educated decision on what I should do, and I also knew that making the wrong choices could seriously impact my future benefits. “Social Security in 30 Minutes” turned out to be the perfect book for me to start my research.

WHAT’S GOOD: Author Emily Pogue has crafted a book that is easily understandable. She breaks the book down into sections: the basics (including how the program works), benefits for family members, working and collecting benefits, and where to go for more information so you can get started applying for your benefits. While there were a couple of times I went back and reread a section, the great majority of the book was easy to follow and I attained the basic knowledge within 30-45 minutes. There is also a Glossary at the end, making it easy to check back if you forget a definition or two.

WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD: Actually, when it comes to the basic information the author is sharing, this book is perfect. The “not so good” category would only apply if you personally are well-acquainted with the fundamentals of Social Security and are seeking something more in-depth.

For the majority of us, this book will help dispel the mysterious fog around an important subject and set us on the right path. Highly recommended for those considering retirement in the next few months or years. Five stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles for a complimentary ebook of this title.
