This book has some great basics when it comes to meditation, but it really is just basics. There are already so many books, CDs, and websites on the topic that it wouldn't be something I added to my library's collection specifically, but it isn't a bad book. If a public library out there doesn't have many basic, beginner-friendly meditation books I would suggest adding this one.

Almost Too Simple

Interestingly, I found this book's introductory section, which was surprisingly lengthy for a book like this, more interesting than the actual mindfulness meditations. In the introductory section, he goes over a variety of topics, like how meditation affects the brain and how you should approach meditation. After this great build-up, I was looking forward to the meditations. But, unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in them as I found them to be too simple. I was truly expecting more. Most of the meditations have the same setup, with very simple instructions following. The book is organized well, starting off with meditations on the mind and then on the body, with other chapters having morning and night meditations; the last two chapters were on 5-minute meditations and meditating anywhere. For a book with anxiety in the title, I didn't really get as much of an anti-anxiety vibe as I was expecting. If you've been a practitioner of meditation for any length of time, this book most likely will not offer you much. If you are new to meditating and want to ease into it very gently, this book might be a good fit.

I liked this book far more than I expected to. Unfortunately, I've recently read other books on mindfulness for people who deal with anxiety and all of those books were disappointing. Some were not detailed enough, while others had far, far too many details and information in them, to the point that they were quite boring to read.

None of those things are the case with this book. The author is a very talented writer who knows how to explain things in a way that is both detailed and interesting. He obviously knows what he's talking about here and has written a book that is not only very informative, but also very enjoyable to read.

This book was a nice surprise to me and I'm very glad I read it. I've learned new things that have already begun to help me and I'm going to continue to practice many of the things I learned in it.

The author is both a meditation instructor and a licensed psychologist, and offers 100 meditation suggestions, many tailored to address not only anxiety, but also to help in finding balance, relieving pain, and encouraging relaxation. It all starts with the breath, or course, but unlike some vague books, this one offers specific step-by-step instructions for meditations of different lengths-- even some to use when waiting in line, stuck in traffic or waiting at a light. Most of the practices are done seated, but both a standing and a walking meditation are offered for those times when sitting isn’t possible. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with advance review copy.
