Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year come in incredibly useful in my classroom. I struggle with a large population of kids that have never been made to read, have learned that comprehension is optional and Shakespeare is worthless. We had a wonderful reading through Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year as well as working on projects discussing words that Shakespeare made up and the special way Shakespeare had to insult people.

Wish I could give this 6 stars! The author has an eye for interesting details and a wry sense of humor, bringing fresh insights into a well-worn topic. The almanac-style format provides a manageable way to get into reading or re-reading the Bard's works. It would work well for a classroom, tying in Shakespeare excerpts to other events, such as the Oscar-themed entry in February, followed by one for Ash Wednesday. I learned details such as that the poet's paternal grandfather was a tenant farmer on land owned by his maternal grandfather in a town called Snitterfield, and these Warwickshire country roots may have informed Shakespeare's discussions of flora and fauna. Other stories, such as that of Shakespeare's son Hamnet, are more familiar but are helpfully paired here with pertinent excerpts from his writing. A fascinating book to have on hand and give as a gift.

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

SHAKESPEARE FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR is edited by Allie Esiri and contains an excerpt from a play or sonnet for each day of the year. Each entry has a short note often offering context or explanation of the Shakespearean lines that follow. It is commendable to reserve time for a moment of reflection each day, but I think this collection will have the greatest appeal to those who already enjoy Shakespeare and can liberally quote from his works.

Thiis is cute! A nice meditative book for the Shakespeare enthusiast, but also a good resource for actors looking for more unusual short monologues. The accompanying glosses on each passage aren’t particularly deep or revelatory, but they don’t need to be.

My son loves Shakespeare and we are excited to incorporate this into our Shakespeare studies this year!

I received an electronic ARC from Penguin Group through NetGalley.
I've already put this book in my Barnes and Noble cart.
Esiri has compiled a year's worth of readings from Shakespeare's canon. Along with the reading, she provides further informative text about the writing and the significance for each day. At the end of the book, she provides a synopsis of each of Shakespeare's works along with citations for when each is quoted in the book as well as an historical timeline.
It's delightful to see how she chose to connect each reading with a particular day. This will make a special gift for teachers and readers who treasure the classics.

This book has lots of potential in a classroom. It's a great way to explore how Shakespeare's work is deeply embedded in Western culture.

An approachable way to get reacquainted with Shakespeare. A delight to pick up every day and discover a new passage, or remember an old one. The format made it easy to read and “portable,” perfect for a commute.

This is a nice coffee-table or gift book for a Shakespeare fan. I agree with other reviews: this would make a nice desk calendar rather than a book. It does give a brief but interesting blurb for context before each quote. And the quotes were longer than I expected, a nice surprise. All in all, I think it is a lovely gift book to look out for when browsing for an English major.

I'd really like to see this condensed into one of those daily calendars! The selections are paired with the date, season, or time of year to make every entry timely and applicable. It is great fun and would be a perfect addition to a library, personal library, or little free library.

Allie Esiri's "Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year" offers its readers the opportunity to spend a little quality time with Shakespeare every day. Upon receiving it for review, I was concerned about how well this would work. I'm the kind of scholar who finds it annoying when people take quotations from his plays out of context and end up misunderstanding them, so I was curious to see how or if Esiri avoided this.

I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the introductions, and felt that they give enough information to be interesting but not overwhelming, and maybe prod a couple readers into doing some Wikipedia searches, which seems like a good thing to me. It seems evident to me that Esiri knows her Shakespeare well, and her introductions set enough of a scene so that unfamiliar readers can understand the plot.

Since I am trying to review it in the spirit of the book, since May 1st (it's now the 15th) I have been reading a passage a day and find that it gives me something to look forward to. Some of the passages are from plays I don't often read and it's nice to be reminded. I especially liked the history of May dancing and the related passages from Shakespeare's comedies included in early May, since it's a holiday not widely celebrated as it was in Shakespeare's time. My only critique was that there were a couple passages that seemed like odd portions to include in the text. It wasn't that I couldn't follow, but perhaps that some of the humor is lost outside the play's context.

While it's a clear choice for someone who already enjoys the poet's work, I think this book has a lot to offer those less familiar and/or less interested. I can definitely see using this in a literature class as a daily class activity, relating the seasons, holidays, history, Shakespeare's biography and other tidbits to the day. I don't often teach Shakespeare's plays, and part of the reason is that an entire play can seem intimidating to students struggling with Shakespeare's language. However, with the interesting introductions that Esiri includes, I think it would be less scary for students to take a look at a portion of Shakespeare's play, and be able to notice detail and enjoy it. I also like that there's a little bit of history in terms of literary criticism, such as Coleridge's opinions of Shakespeare, and also I think I recall a mention of one of the Booths, which was interesting.

Both a good gift, as well as a good addition to a literature classroom intent on teaching Shakespeare.

Shakespeare's works are one of my favorite units to teach every year. Students struggle with the language, as well as the idea that something that is hundreds of years old can't possibly matter today. So, my goal is to make Shakespeare relevant. This book will help with that goal, and will provide another means for students to access material and make a connection.

Thank you Net Galley for the free ARC. Enjoyed this daily quote Shakespeare Book.It reminded me of how often we allude to the bard in our daily language. Great coffee table book.

A devotional for the classical theater nerd in your life. Esiri has selected a Shakespearean speech or excerpt of dialogue for every day of the year, and introduces each with a brief paragraph of context. I was hoping for shorter quotes and longer descriptions/meditations on that theme, because the long passages are not super approachable for those of us who aren't 16th-century scholars. But this will definitely entertain your favorite Shakespeare lover for at least a full year--expect to see it on some 2020 Christmas lists.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

I've always loved books like this, with a surprise for every day. And Shakespeare is my favorite author, so I was really excited to see this one!

I'm still enjoying it (it's only February!), but this is as fun as I imagined. I love having a new (or old) quote to think about every day. There's a great variety and it's done really well.

I think this is a really good collection of Shakespeare excerpts. A lot of important scenes are included, as well as some more obscure scenes from the less Hollywood plays (looking at you, Timon of Athens). The author did a pretty good job of trying to match up scenes to relevant dates, and provided some good background information. Naturally, there is not a Shakespeare quote/scene that perfectly aligns with every day of the year, but there was an attempt to find a good, corresponding phrase.
I would recommend this for anyone who has a passing interest in Shakespeare but doesn't want to commit to reading an entire play. This could potentially introduce a new reader to a play they haven't heard of though, which is always exciting!

Would be a great read for Shakespeare lovers and even a great book to gift. I however, do not read much Shakespeare, but am familiar with the more popular works. This book is interesting in that it breaks down the days with different themes from his works. I would definitely advise any lover of plays or Shakespeare to check it out.
