Another great book from Valerie Holmes. Her Yorkshire setting is so beautifully drawn I could see it in my mind's eye as I read, and I love the way she draws her characters from outside 'the ton' - it makes them seem so much more real, somehow.

This is a great adventure/love story that begins with a runaway mill boy and ends... well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Poldark fans should love it.

This was an interesting story and one I had a little bit of difficulty connecting with. It is well written and the chraracters are well developed but there was a connection missing for me.

Laura Pennington was the strong-willed daughter of Obadiah and Gladys Pennington. Obadiah had moved from a fisherman to a businessman with some wealth. They were trying to navigate their way through the elevated levels of society that they now were privy to because of their wealth.

Daniel Trenton owned a textile mill and was the man to whom Obadiah had set his sites on having his daughter marry. I liked the relationship between Daniel and Laura but felt that it could have been better developed. I liked the resolution between Obadiah and Gladys but it made me sad that Obadiah had gained wealth only to lose the respect and love and trust of those that should have mattered most to him.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

This is the story of Laura Pennington and Daniel Tranton.
Laura's father, Obadiah, who would be what is considered a CIT by Ton standards, wants to secure a good match for his only child. He contacts Daniel, a local mill owner, with the offer of Laura's hand in exchange for business perks. Daniel comes to meet with Obadiah to discuss this but become embroiled in the life of young Jeb, a runaway from the mill that is owned by his cousin Roderick. Jeb is being hunted by the malicious man who is in charge of managing the mill. Daniel enlists Laura's assistance in getting Jeb to safety. Although he is aware of who she is, Laura has no idea that she has been offered to him by her father.
Laura reluctantly agrees to help, but the ensuing rescue and subsequent violent attempts against Daniel have both of them trying to keep the other safe.
Laura learns some disturbing things about her father, whom she thinks "hung the moon" that shatter her belief in her father.
You will have to read this story to find out what becomes of Laura and Daniel.
Although a little slow to start, overall this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend.
Thank you Valerie Holmes, Sapere Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

1819, Yorkshire
Laura Pennington is the only daughter of self-made man, Obadiah Pennington and is keen to see his daughter secured in marriage to an eligible suitor. Local mill owner, Daniel Tranton seems to fit the bill. However wilful and headstrong, Laura is reluctant to have her life dictated to her.
Fate throws her into Daniel’s path when they come together to aid a young lad, Jeb, who has been mistreated by his employers.
This is the third book in the series but it could be read on its own. I found it to be another page turning read, as a Yorkshire lass I love reading a book set away from the London ballrooms. The pace was good & held my interest all the way through. The characters had depth but whilst I liked them I didn’t love them. An engaging addition to the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I enjoyed this book, but I think it suffers from an identity crisis. Is it a Regency romance? Or about the mill workers rebellions in the North? Or a spy novel (though I suppose that’s a reach)? And are we even supposed to like these characters? It was hard to tell how the author wanted us to feel about any of them. All that said, I found the writing much improved from the first book.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I liked this story until it reached the ending. I enjoyed the main character and the suitor her father had chosen. Unfortunately, I despised everything that related back to her father. It felt that in the end the story was mainly about her father with the character being a secondary character. The final events took everything too far for my taste and I didn't walk away from the story with any sense of completion. Instead, I felt uncomfortable as I thought back on it and wished to read something more steady. Stories don't have to always end in "Happily ever after" but when they don't, the reader doesn't want to be left feeling that it wasn't right. This story didn't end on a sad note or a happy note.
