Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

The Brothers of Auschwitz Malka Adleris the first book I have read from this author. This book is based on a true story of hope and heartbreak, this is a story about a family separated by the Holocaust and their harrowing journey back to each other.

Dov and Yitzhak live in a small village in the mountains of Hungary, isolated both from the world and from the horrors of the war. But one day in 1944, everything changes. The Nazis storm the homes of the Jewish villagers and inform them they have one hour. One hour before the train will take them to Auschwitz.

Six decades later, from the safety of their living rooms at home in Israel, the brothers finally break their silence to a friend who will never let their stories be forgotten.

This book was a lovely but emotional read and you will need tissues. I really enjoyed this book

Big Thank you to One More Chapter and NetGalley for the early read.

Wow! I was totally blown away by the raw emotion in this book! What a difficult read it was. So much so, I had to come back to it several times, unlike the poor souls who were the main characters. I read it a while ago and this is one of those books that you don't know how to review due to the content.

The writing was gripping and unfortunately was so good, you could more or less be transported there.

Heart-breaking and moving at the same time.

My goodness this was a hard, highly emotional and utterly breathtaking book to read, I cried so much I probably have permanently puffy eyes and yet the story has settled onto my heart. It's not the easiest of reads just as with any book set in Auschwitz they aren't the easiest to read we all know the horrific history and truth, but these stories need to be heard and need to be read no matter how difficult it is for the reader we must persevere. I did and I am so pleased I did, it's deeply moving and deeply heartbreaking and a story that will stay with me for a long time.

This book is nothing short of gut-wrenching. You are exposed to the true horrors experienced during the holocaust. But you also are given a view of the life the brothers had after the war. You are given a warning at the beginning of the book and you should not take it lightly. What sets this book apart is not only the atrocities experienced at Auschwitz, but how this affected them after the war was over. I don’t believe people realized how much the survivors of the camps continued to be affected. Indeed, every aspect of their livers were touched by their traumatic ordeals. Imagine have to change how you respond to everyday activities … not gulping down your food, not hiding food because you never know whether you’ll have any, washing your hands before meals, learning to say thank you, feeling comfortable going to a doctor or riding on a train or going to a BBQ. And then to be judged by people in Israel who could not understand how they “allowed” themselves to be led like “sheep to the slaughter.” This book will be one that will stay with you long after you’ve read the last word and slowly close it.

Thank you to NetGalley and One More Chapter for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

This is one of the saddest books that I have read
This book is raw and honest but the research that went into this is excellent.
A much highly recommended book

Two stories of the same family and so different that makes you wonder what was the world thinking back then. These two brothers struggled through the worst but came out together and to find four more members of the family afterwards. Dov and Yitzhak came from a large family, that was almost eliminated but lasts from three siblings and three aunts. Their story was difficult to tell but they did so we could learn about the cruel and inhumane things that were done. It inspires hope that even in the darkest of times, all is not lost.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK and One More Chapter. I have read several very moving memoirs about Holocaust survivors over the past few years and this one was both profoundly harrowing and incredibly inspiring. The stories of what happened in the concentration camps still have the capacity to shock and horrify the reader even after having read similar accounts. What this family and so many others endured is almost unthinkable today but thankfully we can read about it through incredible books like this one.

Just wow. The stories that this family has to tell is shocking: from the transportation to the camps, the unbelievable cruelties that they were subject to, the stories of the kindness of strangers, of luck, of their own courage and will to survive. Where this story differs from a lot of books that I've read by survivors is that this also tells the story of afterwards. After the camps, after they are "safe". The physical and psychological scars that these brothers and others have been left with, their ways of dealing with it all (or not). The impact of the Holocaust can be felt echoing down the generations. Heartbreaking yet also uplifting in places. This is a must read for all of those who want to know more about what these poor men endured in the camps and afterwards. Lest we forget.

This was a brutal and raw story with a power I have not experienced before in my reading. I have a lot of respect for The Brothers of Auschwitz but the writing style made it hard for me to read (possibly because it is a translation).

I have read many Holocaust books in my time, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for The Brothers of Auschwitz.

At the beginning of the book we meet Dov and Yitzha , they live in a tiny village in the mountains of Hungary, and thanks to the town being so isolated they believed their Jewish family was safe from the Nazis and they would leave them alone. But that all changed in 1944 when the Nazi’s arrived and their world as they knew it crumbled around them, as they spend 3 days being transported into hell.

But The Brothers of Auschwitz goes beyond anything I have ever read before, as this book takes you beyond the war, where Dov and Yitzha have to relearn all the freedoms that we all take for granted.

The Brothers of Auschwitz is beyond anything I could ever imagine, or would take me on such an devastating roller coaster of truest emotions.

Ms. Adler's book is a must read. It is visceral in it's emotion and will leave you in tears as you read it. Add it to your TBR immediately.

5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended reading.

his book was translated for Israeli Author Malka Adler .
Based on true accounts of teenage brothers Dov and Yitzhak and their experience during the holocaust in WWII. Living in a remote village in the mountains of Hungary the Jewish family thought they were safe from Nazis and they would not be bothered.
What transpires next is only the start of nightmare they could not even begin to imagine.
They have one hour to be ready to leave their home and ride on a train for days to reach Auschwitz .
I have read many books on this subject but this one will really stay with me and not fade from memory.
The descriptions are so painful you can even after all this time you can feel the strong emotions these brothers and their sister went through.
The author is the only one the brothers granted an interview to to talk about their harrowing experience and through this book she makes sure their time there is not forgotten.
It really brings tears to your eyes wondering how people can be so cruel and vicious to another human being.
The book is heartbreakingly raw and harrowing, very well written.
Unflinchingly realistic is how it was written and this tragedy never should have been able to happen.
My heart aches for all who were affected by this.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you.

A tough but worthy read. Dov and Yitzhak are finally telling their stories. Born in Hungary, they found themselves rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. This details the horrors they experienced but also, more importantly, their love for each other. Thanks for the arc.

The powerful story of two brothers taken from their village to Auswitz and the telling of their story in alternate chapters many years later when they are living in Israel. I found it quite difficult to get into at first because of the writing style but one that is worth persevering with and will stay with you a long time afterwards, especial poignant to me as I visited Auswitz last year.

I really enjoyed this book. I love anything to do with WW2 and I've read countless WW2 fictions, books set in/around Auschwitz and other concentration camps. It's something that's so interesting & they are stories that we should keep retelling over and over because they need to be told and the atrocities that happened during World War 2 should not be forgotten.

If I had to describe this book I would say - it kept me breathless!
Holocaust story - the gruesome experience noone should endure.
The book made me shiver all over my body just thinking how incredible unhuman life was during that time.
One of those books that makes you look back and say - these people should be my heroes....

I initially picked up this book a couple of times and just wasn’t ready to read it as knew it would be a really tough read. However, having read it now didn’t realise how tough it would be, due to subject matter. I have read many holocaust stories and each one teaches me more about this horrific period of time and the horrors that was faced. I find it amazing that anyone survived.
