This was a wonderful story for anybody who likes dogs, the relationship that builds between the trainer and animal.

The fun and the heartache.

A really good mix of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

A quick easy read

Set in the future, the story has a sci-fi texture. The character is challenged by relationships and studies as well as dealing with a stardrake. What she wasn't prepared for was saying good-bye at the end of her year with the stardrake. Will she have the ability to raise any service animal, knowing deep down she can't keep it? Scott King incorporates technical science into the story without hindering the reader with technical jargon. He captures the University experience of a head strong, intelligent and independent young girl who meets her match in the stardrake she is fostering. I really hope that there's more books to follow. Highly recommend.

Sweet and light, but ultimately shallow and forgettable for me. I love narratives about the human connection with animals, but I just couldn't get engaged in this one beyond the occasional "aww, cute." If you need a light palette-cleanser, this book might tickle your fancy, but it was a miss for me.

I hated Barnabus in the beginning and didn't know how its responsibility was given to a young person.

I liked the science fiction parts of the story aka The talking about the space ships and the different materials .
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of that to keep me reading.

"Marly" in space

We don't know how old a PhD student is in this culture but Kayla acts like a teen. The book is juvenile and not fun to read. It's "Marly" in space.

Written by Scott King, this novel follows Kayla as she embarks to take care of a stardrake, a dragon like creature that is used in many different services.

If you enjoy novels about raising animals and the kind of trouble they can get into as well as just service animals in general, this is a good novel for you.

Personally, I just couldn't get into the story. I found it difficult to read.

Kayla and Barnabus were amazing characters. I love reading books that feature a cooperative relationship between humans and other creatures.

This is going on my keeper-shelf beside my much loved Beast Master series by Andre Norton and the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce.

The Stardrake effect is a wonderful story of learning, friendship and healing.
It's a story of assisstance animals, set in a fantasy world with a stardrake stealing hearts without effort.

I loved this book and what inspired the author to write it. His deeply personal approach and the love that went into this has my deepest respect.
As someone who has studied the works and accomplishments in the field of assistance animals, and most of all that of dogs, I can relate to the author and love how he has written his story.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this lovely eARC.
