This is an intriguing book to read not least because the story is not just about another murder but is an original take on every angle. The story is about a jury in a murder trial persuaded against the odds by one of their number to deliver a not guilty verdict. Ten years later, that juror, now a defence attorney who has been pursued by those who challenged the verdict is back with her former jury colleagues to challenge a programme initiated by one of them to try to demonstrate that the verdict was wrong. One of them is murdered. That leads to a cleverly conceived story encouraging the reader to come to conclusions that might or might not be the truth. The climax is as much a cliffhanger as the rest of the story which has many twists and turns. There was only one error. The reference near the end to the 'English' royal family. There is no such thing! This is a book to keep you reading.

THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!! It took my love of 3 things and put them in a blender and made something awesome: True Crime, Documentaries about true crime, and reading about true crime!

PERFECT one that kept me interested and guessing. I loved it so so much!

It has been a very long time since a book captivated me the way "The Holdout" did. It is a mystery/suspense but in a non-traditional way. It addresses the topics of race relations and the injustices of the justice system in a sensitive but compelling way.

The story follows Maya and the other jurors who were made infamous by pardoning an African American teacher, accused of murdering a young, white, rich student. It is ten years later and this case has changed all of their lives. A podcast begins following the story and brings back the jurors for the ten year anniversary. The unthinkable happens at this reunion and it breaks open all the mysteries laid to rest.

I have recommended this to so many people since reading it. I can't wait to press this into the hands of many, this winter! I will be reading the other works by Graham Moore!

The Holdout by Graham Moore is a complex, all-enveloping, mystery that has a little bit of everything. Yes it is fiction, yes it is mystery, but it also weaves a fascinating, intricate, nail-biting, and addictive storyline throughout from beginning to stunning end.
At first I was not sure where this would go, but as the author continued to weave more plot twists, add in snippets of each juror in their own thoughts in 2009, I realized that each throwback gave me information that added to the overall plot and mystery.
I loved every moment of this book. It was like my forever loved Dateline mixed in with a Christie novel of murder/intrigue/mystery, but way, way better.
Kudos to Mr Moore for this awesome read. I did not see the end coming!

Excellent. 5/5 stars

Im a big fan of Graham Moore's work. I absolutely loved Last Days of Night, and though the Sherlockian was just ok. I would say this probably ranks as my #2 book of his. It was a unique take on a courtroom drama, and i really enjoyed the twists at the end.

The book centres around the trial of a man named Bobby Nock who is accused of killing a young girl who he had an inappropriate relationship with. When the jury finds him not guilty it changes the jurors life forever. At a reunion of the jury members 10 years later one of the jury members, Rick is found dead and another jury member, Maya, is arrested for the murder.

The book goes into details of the original trial of Bobby Nock as well as a detailed history of each jury member. The story also tells of Maya’s own investigation to clear her name.

I was drawn to the book as I said because of the title but in addition I love legal drama stories. Prior to becoming a broker I was in the legal profession and have always been intrigued by the legal system. I use to love watching Court TV and see how lawyers defend their clients. I had the experience of watching many talented lawyers defend there clients using clever defences. This story had some descriptive details of the trial process and detailed the actual testimony and interactions of the lawyers and witnesses during the Bobby Nock trial which I really liked. I thought the storyline of Ricks murder was sort of an afterthought and even though it was a major plot line the author didn’t treat it as such. I also thought the ending was somewhat anticlimactic. Overall I would say it was an enjoyable read but not a must read.

Apparently my opinion is in the minority but I didn’t love this one. Too much going on and it wasn’t believable. I skimmed the last quarter and didn’t even care to figure out who was behind what.

I have been invited to read this novel because I have previously read and reviewed the author's previous book. The link on the page to which I was directed from my email to send the novel to my Kindle doesn't work. Please advise me on how to get this novel.

Thanks,

I just finished The Holdout and I can definitely see this book becoming a movie. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the story flips end over end. What a great ride! I also enjoyed how the writer integrated diversity into the book and the unique he was able to tell an entire story, as well as, Individual stories about each juror. While I thought the book could have been a bit tighter (shorter), overall it was an entertaining and enjoyable read.

“The Holdout”, by Graham Moore, is one of the best books I’ve read this year!! The book centers around Maya Seale, who is the lone holdout in a sensational murder trial Ten years later, the jury reunites, and all hell breaks loose. This is not your typical cookie-cutter courtroom drama, as the book turns in so many directions, and just when you think you know what’s going on, it just explodes in another direction, right up to the final pages. Truly a great read, interesting characters, and a killer ending. Quite a book!
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through @NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Graham Moore has a knack for dialogue and characterization, important when crafting courtroom thrillers. The Holdout features a above average plot with two murder mysteries, one a closed room that isn't locked and the other a timely issue. By constructing this around the personalities of a sequestered jury and the aftermath of a notorious trial, Moore manages to keep many balls in the air, raising ethical issues as approached from many directions. Well done.

This was…fantastic, I gotta say.

I had high hopes for The Holdout by Graham Moore mostly because I love 12 Angry Men, and this felt like some sort of spiritual homage with a modern twist. I was not disappointed.

The characters in this book are relatable, more than anything, and each of them flawed, diverse, and unique. I whole-heartedly enjoyed the use of flashback chapters, one from each character’s POV, which really helped to flesh out the inner world of each character and get to the core of who they are.

The mystery was fun and fresh and I didn’t see the end coming, except for one detail which didn’t end up how I expected, so I consider that a success. It was procedural without being repetitive, which is hard, and it also had a depth of character that felt refreshing for this genre.

I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to recommending it.

I loved this mystery novel. The flashbacks were fascinating and the plot was fast paced. I honestly had no idea who the "killer" would be until the final pages - my theories kept changing and I literally could not put the novel down. As far as crime novels go, this one is amazing!

Note: There is some strong language in this novel.

I received an ARC from NetGalley.

A really great jury duty/ murder that doesn't disappoint. The story goes back and forth through the years, but author makes it flow perfectly. What a gem!

Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free,it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
