D.J. Palmer's "The New Husband" is a chilling thriller that explores the complexities of love, loss, and the deceptions we weave in their wake.
But as Nina allows herself to fall for Simon, a sense of unease creeps in. Her friends voice their concerns about Simon's obsessive behavior, and strange occurrences chip away at the picture-perfect facade. The suspense builds as Nina is forced to confront the possibility that Simon may not be the savior he appears to be.
Palmer crafts a world of shifting realities, where Nina's past trauma and present desires cloud her judgment—the novel delves into the psychological aspects of manipulation and obsession, making for a genuinely unsettling read. The plot is over the top, and how some elements came together is not fully explained. The multiple POVs also seem over the top and unnecessary. Nonetheless, I enjoyed Nina's redemption from clueless and scattered to focused and protective. The gem is Nina's daughter, Maggie. She is relatable and unwavering and a welcomed alternative to Nina.
The New Husband is a decent thriller, although extravagant at times. This book is worth checking out if you enjoy a good dose of suspense with a complex and morally ambiguous protagonist.

Nina’s husband has disappeared and feared to have died. She meets Simon and tries to move on but her daughter does not like Simon. Honestly, the best part of the story for me was Daisy (the family dog). The first half of the book was a little slow for me but once things got going it held my attention through the end. I

I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.

The beginning was pretty slow, and it almost got to the point I DNF, but thank goodness I didn’t!! Wow, when this book got going, it got going! I highly recommend.

Nina Garrity and her two kids, Maggie and Connor have been through it. While fishing Glen, Nina’s husband went missing. It’s been 2 years and she has moved on even though his body was never recovered.
Enter Simon, a middle school history teacher who arrives on the scene returning the family dog when she gets out. Nina and Simon start dating and eventually they move in together. It’s an adjustment for everyone but more so for Maggie. She’s not Simon’s biggest fan and she really misses her dad.
Simon is very controlling. Doesn’t want Nina to work, hang out with her friends and it’s become a problem in their relationship. Nina has begun to see Maggie’s concerns and has some of her own too. Has Nina put her family in danger? What happened to Glen and where is his body? What about Simon, does she really know him?
I really enjoyed this one. The mind blowing plot twist made it hard to put down. Simon’s character was so disturbing. Definitely a must read if you like thrillers!

THE NEW HUSBAND

There’s much to learn in this well-written page-turner, about love, trust, abuse and control, not judging others, and courage. The varying points of view led to a gradual understanding of underlying dangers, suspicions, patterns, warnings, all leading to surprises and twists and edge-of-the-seat suspense.
It’s a sign of a good book when I set aside other pursuits because they just can’t compete, and when lessons remain with me after I finish reading. It was especially impressive to see some of those lessons in the form of a college essay, one which, in real life, would surely earn a place in next year’s class. Yes, it’s that good. One plot point deserves a place in a college ethics class, alongside the one about if it’s okay to steal food if one’s family is starving. I won’t spoil it with details, but I do think it is justified.

This one has a really slow first half and then things pick up at the half-way mark. I struggled with believability on this one though – especially with Nina’s character. As a mother, I would trust my children much more than a new man in my life. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about this one.

This one was twisty and had me wondering at times if I was going to finish but I did finish it. Nina lost her husband, presumably he died, and she is left struggling with paying the bills and raising her children. When she meets a teacher who seems to be going through much of the same they strike up a friendship but he seems to be too good to be true. Her son loves him but her daughter just cannot get on board and her friends even think there is something wrong. Why is she so trusting. Again, twisty thriller.

The first half of the book or so was a little slow, but it definitely picked up. A good, twisty thriller. A solid 3.5 stars

I started this read without reading any reviews from this and not much of the synopsis except for the title that pretty much tells me all I would ever need. The story opens up with someone’s disappearance from a fishing boat, which we learns later is Glen. Mystery of his disappearance starts to ramp up and as the layers are peeled, the story really begins to take a drastic turn.

I enjoyed this thrilling ride of a read. The excitement that built up will keep you turning those pages.

I'm glad I finally decided to read this book. It was so good I finished in two days. The title kind of gives an inkling that things are not right. This would definitely make a good made for tv movie. Once again the author keeps you on your toes and moves the story along at a nice pace. The characters were genuine and I always love a story with animals. The twist of the story was so unexpected sand the ending perfect. This us a suspense thriller that would have you yelling at the tv screen
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book to read and review. Highly recommend.

This book kept me by the edge of my seat (or bed). The blurb was enough to engage me, but when I was reading, it was everything I never expected. Great read!

After her husband disappears, Nina is trying to get her life back together and soon starts up a relationship with Simon, a teacher at her daughter Maggie's school. Nina believes that her husband Glen left their family on his own and is upset with information she finds out after his disappearance. Maggie is not happy about Simon and Nina becoming romantic. In my opinion, Maggie and Daisy, the dog, are the best characters in the book. Connor, Maggie's brother, is trying to move on and embraces having Simon in his life. However, we start seeing that Simon is not a good guy. He is manipulative and distances Nina from her friends and family. D.J. Palmer's books are always a rollercoaster ride for me and I can't put them down.

Mysteries have me reading too late and this book was no exception - I couldn’t put it down because I had to know the ending. Great captivating book - definitely recommend.

I received this book from NetGalley for review.

This book is about finding love after a betrayal but at what cost? Nina whose prior husband left her and her kids by simply disappearing. The proverbial went to the store and didn’t come back. Nina finds love again with Simon, but Simon is too perfect on the outside and things start to unravel.
I didn’t hate this book, but it wasn’t love either. It is not my normal genre of reading, but after falling in love with other mystery and thrillers I wanted to reach further.

This was a typical keep-you-guessing domestic/psychological thriller that I feel is targeted directly for my demographic. I've read so many books like this one, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. The only critique (a minor one) I have is fewer 'cliffhangers' would make the bigger ones more impactful.
