Oof. Dang. I want to say I didn't see that coming, but I definitely saw that coming. But as Willy Wonka said, "The suspense is terrible...I hope it will last."
Some minor editing issues and a small issue with continuity, but a highly suggested domestic suspense. I look forward to more books by this author.
Side note, slight spoiler. I really want to see The Silence of the Lambs again now.

Amazing!!!! This book pulls you in and keeps you guessing. Nina’s husband Glen goes missing and is assumed dead. Nina soon has a new man in her life, Simon. Not everyone gets along with Simon, including Nina’s daughter, Maggie. Maggie is determined to keep Simon from joining the family permanently.
I love how this book gives little hints about what is happening. It slowly unravels the story in the best way. I don’t want to give anything away but this book will keep you guessing and has more than a few amazing twists.

Nina’s world is turned upside down when they find her husband Glen’s boat abandoned with her wonderful golden retriever Daisy on board with blood on her paws and Glen no where to be found.
Flash forward two years, Glen is still missing. Nina is dating Simon, a history teacher in her daughter Maggie’s school, who Maggie isn’t a fan of, but her brother Connor adores. Nina is smitten and Simon seems perfect, until her relationship with her daughter and her friends become affected and more and more strange things start happening.
In the beginning, this book seemed a little slow for me, but then when it picked up, full speed ahead. It was creepy, disturbing, my spidey senses were on high alert, and I felt like I was watching a lifetime movie in my head.
I obviously am biased and LOVED that there was a golden retriever, who was perfect as can be throughout the book.
I loved how strong Maggie was dealing with being bullied at school, losing her friends, and sticking to her gut throughout the book. I also enjoyed watching her evolve into a better person with her mathlete best friend Ben by her side.
I really enjoyed the crazy ride with all the twists and turns of this book. 4 🌟

This book was a wee bit disappointing as well as very predictable. It may be hard for some reader due to the content of the book. It started off slow. And for me it just never picked up much.

I received an ARC through NetGalley.
I found the beginning of this book slow, but I think it serves a purpose. Once it picks up, it is a wild ride that I could not put down.
The subject matter may be difficult for some readers.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Glen Garrity goes missing while on a fishing trip, leaving behind his wife, Nina, and two teen-aged children, Connor and Maggie. His boat is found covered in blood, but his body has never been found. Was it an accident, did he stage his disappearance or was it foul play? Nina soon learns that Glen had been leading a double life and that just because you love someone, it doesn't mean you know them.
17 months later, Nina has somewhat come to terms with her husband’s disappearance and is letting go of the past. She and her children will be moving in with her soon-to-be-fiance, Simon, who will end up being the second man in her life that she loves and doesn’t know. Simon, a teacher at the kids’ high school, hits it off with Connor. Maggie, on the other hand, is sure her father is still alive and will return to the family. Simon’s charms fail to win her over, and Maggie does see the darkness inside Simon. However, their increasingly contentious relationship means she is just the girl crying wolf and no one will believe her until it’s too late.
The book is written from more than one perspective, including Nina and Maggie’s. While the story-line has some surprises and nothing is quite as it seems, I felt the book (a hefty 384 pages) was slow-paced and repetitive. First, we hear Nina’s version as it happens, then we relive it when she tells her therapist, then we relive it yet again as she thinks about it, then we hear it from Maggie’s perspective. In the end, it’s not enough to keep the momentum of the story flowing at a thriller pace. Second, Maggie’s narration seems written for a YA audience. Her perspective is vital to the telling of the story, but a lot of time is spent on Maggie’s teen-age angst as she is bullied in school, which becomes boring. Third, I know it’s a cliche, but this is a Lifetime movie. You will physically yell things at the book: open your eyes, how can you not see that, are you really that stupid, get OUT of the house!!
It’s an entertaining book if you’re looking for distraction.

Note: I received an advanced readers' copy in exchange for my honest review of this book!
I have really been into thrillers recently, and this one was a bit disappointing. I do not want to give much away in this review, but I will say that it was predictable and I guessed the end in the first few chapters. It was still an enjoyable journey, but not too suspenseful.

Nina Garrity's husband Glen is missing/presumed dead [blood found all over his fishing boat] Simon Fitch, a teacher at Nina's children's school enters her life, offering love and security. Two years later, they move in together.
Nina is vulnerable and naive. Simon is a lying, manipulative, control freak. Get it?!
Isn't it ironic that when Nina returns to work [against Simon's wishes] she's employed as a social worker at the Davis Family Center when her own family has issues?
What can I say about this book? Well written. A page turner until about 60% in and then I said: "Whoa." I'd pretty much had enough. It had, for me, become absurd--and tiresome. There were hints dropped throughout that made me certain of a few trajectories; I was correct. It became somewhat predictable. I lost interest though I did want to see how it turned out.
Spoiler alert: how did Glen get phone reception in an underground cell? {maybe I'm in error though]
What rang true: depiction of teenage angst--Maggie, her new found friend Ben, and her previous friend Laura--all accurate portrayals.
At the end--ridiculous. Too neat and tidy. And another spoiler alert: really? A book deal. $200k to track down Simon's former wife, help Detective Wheeler's widow, and for the Garritys to live on? I think not. It doesn't go that far.
The Epilogue. Groan.
So: I think it's time for me to take a break from psychological thrillers. This was an ok read, but ultimately, not so much.

Nina Garrity's husband, Glen, is missing and presumed to be dead. After Glen's disappearance, Nina discovers some disturbing information about her husband. His betrayals make Nina feel as though she never really knew her husband. Luckily, Nina has Simon Fitch in her life. He's charming, attentive, loving, and seems to know what Nina needs before she even realizes she needs it. Nina's son, Connor, adores Simon. Simon shows Connor the attention that Glen never could find the time for. Nina's daughter, Maggie, sees something else in Simon. She resents his presence in their lives and feels as though there's something about Simon that isn't quite right. Not long after Simon and Nina move in together, some weird things start to happen. Nina is frustrated with Maggie for not accepting Simon, but does Maggie have good reason to believe he's not all he seems to be?
I found this a little slow in the beginning, but I never wanted to stop reading. The second half of the book was a wild ride. Once the author revealed what was going on, I had an inkling of what would ultimately happen in the end, but I didn't know how it would happen. I was lucky to win a previous giveaway for Saving Meghan and had really enjoyed that, too. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!

The new husband. Is a pretty predictable thriller. A pretty good read though. For everyone who is getting remarried or going back on the dating scene. You just never know who you might be getting

Ohhhhh, this is creepy as hell.
I don’t want to give away the story.......woman loses husband and finds what she thinks is a perfect new guy even as she is not sure what happened to her husband......that is just the very baseline for this incredible story., reaches creepy in a way I would not have thought of and sincerely hope we never see in real life......great story.
Definitely need to read.

While somewhat predictable this story still kept and held my attention. Even though I thought I knew what was coming next, I still kept holding out for a good twist...which unfortunately never came. The characters were unlikeable and gullible although it did show the gradual controlling and abusive behavior as well as the length abusers will go to which it is always good to shed light on. Looking forward to more by this author

This was a quick, interesting and enjoyable thriller. I found myself flying through the book, wanting to find out what happened next. At the same time, this book seemed very familiar to me like I've read something similar or seen a similar movie. I couldn't put my finger on what it reminded me of but it was all very familiar, which made it fairly predictable. Despite being predictable, I really enjoyed it.
This is a story of Nina, a mom of two teenagers, whose husband went missing a few years prior. She has started in a new relationship with a guy named Simon, who also happens to be a well-liked teacher and the teenagers' school. This story is told from several point of views and I really liked that approach to this story-telling. I thought author did a great job developing the teenage daughter, Maggie. Maggie's chapters were my favorite to read. I did get slightly annoyed with Nina because certain things kept being presented to her and she would just ignore them.
Overall, this was a fairly predictable, while still very enjoyable thriller and would definitely recommend for someone looking for a mystery fix.
*I received this book from Netgally and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Excellent! I love when you read a book and it's like you're watching this suspenseful movie. You're so engrossed, you can picture all the characters, time just flies by and you are just immersed in the story. I kept wanting to get back to the story. Nicely done.

With a character who would give Joe from You a run for his money, DJ Palmer has written a harrowing tale of obsessive love taken to the extreme. When Nina’s first husband goes mysteriously missing, she is filled with a sense of betrayal as his secrets continue rising to the surface during the investigation into his disappearance. While continuing to grapple with his absence and the truth of what happened to him, high school teacher Simon swoops in like a heroic gentleman from a Regency era novel.
Simon, who until now has been a fringe acquaintance at best, slithers into Nina and her children’s lives with perfect timing. Nina takes their (too many) coincidental meetings and likes in stride. The near constant symmetry of their personalities and preferences give Nina tinge of uncertainty and doubt that she actively ignores, which at times can be frustrating to the reader. Only thirteen-year-old Maggie seems aware that all is not as it appears. Simon is revered not only in her household, but within their community, and she is the sole person who sees past his carefully crafted façade.
Without giving away much of this psychological thriller, I felt most drawn to Maggie, the friend Ben she makes during the novel, and the dog, Daisy. Nina often aggravated me with the many times she blew off her daughter’s concerns and her impossible desire to have at least the appearance of a happy home life with interloper Simon. As a mother myself to a daughter of similar age, I was often left incredulous and slightly appalled by their interactions. However, without Nina’s staggering doubt, the story would have ended much sooner and the plot would not have moved forward to its exciting and nerve-wracking end.
As others have noted, this is a story that has done before, but Palmer succeeds in coming up with some truly unique ideas and takes it to a whole new level. Unlike other reviewers, I never felt any suspension of belief since the actions always remained true to the characters. The first bit of the book does drag on, but it’s also a necessity to set the scene and shows an accurate portrayal of how an abusive partner gradually and subtly intensifies during the relationship. Taking these pros and cons into consideration, I’m giving this one 3.5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the complimentary advance copy. This had no impact on my review.

Very much like a story one might see on a 'Dateline' mystery. Read if you like a little mystery that you know what's happening. Very easy to tell where all things were heading, it just takes awhile to get there and see everyone's viewpoint along the way. Predictable. You'd think she would have figured it out way long before nearly two years had passed. It might have been nice to put the person's name at the chapter headings when the voice is changed. Not sure the title is correct, as they were never married. Thought provoking for women who have met new men with a hazy past
I received this book as a complimentary copy for an unbiased review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC.

The New Husband was a really FUN read. Prepare to suspend reality and DIVE IN!
This book immediately grabbed my attention and kept me turning the pages till the very end. It was pretty far fetched but it still kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. I was clenching my teeth and my heart was racing as I turned the pages which is one of the things I look for in a thriller.
I loved how different this book was from D.J. Palmer’s first novel, Saving Meghan, which was a medical thriller. Great work, 4.25 stars and an author to watch out for!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced eARC of The New Husband.

Talk about twists and turns! While Simon’s “true colors” became evident to me long before the book revealed them, I loved the way the author weaves the story from different viewpoints and really liked Maggie’s essay at the end. I do wish we had some closure where Allison was concerned, but other than that, this book was fantastic and I’ve already passed the name of the book and author on to a few coworkers that love to read!

A mysterious empty boat, --- but is that blood?
A move with an upset teenager
A new relationship
New beginnings can be scary!!
Wait - a discovery!
Choices made, poor choices- choices for survival - choices for family
choices create change.

OOO-MMM-GGGEEE! Oh gosh! Lord ham Mercy! Is this book ever full of so many twists, turns, deceit, manipulation and a whole lot of cray! Nina's life is turned upside down when her husband, Glen goes missing and a good samaritan named Simon brings back the family dog Daisy, who was on the husband's trip. Simon casually stays around and immerses himself into Nina's life along with this of her two children, Connor (who likes him) and Maggie (who does not). Nina feels her life is getting back on track with Simon and Nina even finds a job, against Simon's better judgment; but Maggie is out to prove Simon shouldn't be a part of their lives and she has several reasons why, all going back to her dad Glen. Is Glen really dead? Who should Nina trust? These are just a few of the questions in this action-paced suspense thriller. Plus it has "OMG" moments and "Holy moly, did that just happen" also.
This was finally, in my opinion, a worthy 5 star review thriller/suspense book. I have read some mediocre thrillers this year and this was a pleasant change. It wasn't predictable. The characterization was great and so was the story. You will go through the whole span of emotions with this one, I sure did!.
Thanks to DJ Palmer, the publisher and NetGally for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I definitely want to read more by DJ Palmer if her books are as good as this was. I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did!
