Intro to Mexican Culture for Kids

The Tiny Travelers Treasure Quest series introduces the cultures of different countries to children. This is a particularly vividly colorful book that certainly reflects the colors of Mexico. The book spent a lot of time in Mexico City itself but went further afield to jungle areas and ancient sites. There's also just a page of Mexican foods, although I did not recognize some of them—and I've had a lot of Mexican food having grown up on the west coast of the United States. I think some were a little too stylized, and the angle was a little awkward as well. The book did have some issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage. The very first page had a comma splice. I never like to see these kinds of errors in any children's book because children are sponges who learn from everywhere and everything. We certainly don't want them to learn incorrect grammar and usage from a children's book. I also thought some text did not contrast enough with the background. Most were fine, but a few areas were certainly hard to read. One particular place had black writing on a deeply saturated red background, making the words very hard to read. All in all, though, this is a decent introduction to the culture of Mexico for children.

This delightful book offers a child's-eye view of Mexico, complete with Spanish words, customs, food, dance and sports. The book points out different parts of the country, and offers older children the option to extend their learning by finding a treasure on each page, as well as a did you know? fact. Children can really learn a few tangible facts about Mexico that go beyond typical stereotypes.

Spanish words are peppered throughout a whirlwind tour of Mexico in this “birds-eye,” brief, introduction to Mexican people and culture. Notable landmarks (including El Angel, Teotihuacan, and Yaxchilan) make hurried appearances. In addition, cultural references to wrestling, the Day of the Dead and Mexican food are also included.

I like the idea of this book. The problem, however, rests in the book’s execution. The illustrations lack a unifying core and appear to be done by committee. Notably, while the colors are vivid, the illustrations are cluttered and “read” more like a “find me,” picture puzzle than an introduction to a country and culture. Yes, part of the book’s appeal is the “find me” aspect. In fact, prompts in the book ask you to find things in the picture. For example, one prompt asks you “can you find the jaguar?” [It’s highlighted in a glow, so you can’t miss it.] However, the art sacrifices the learning aspect of the book to make the search work.

Aimed primarily at three to six-year-olds it may hold their attention. The question is, will they learn anything? I’m not sure. The cultural references are fleeting as are the geographic and traditional points of interests. It’s too much and too little at the same time. Simply put, there is no room on my bookshelf.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing a review copy of these books. The views expressed herein are my own.

Tiny Travelers Mexico Treasure Quest is an adorable travel book to introduce little ones to many of the interesting locations and traditions of Mexico. The illustrations are beautiful and make the country come live for the reader. The quests help to make sure children are engaged in the story.

I would recommend this book to children who travel to Mexico with family or as part of an educational unit.

As with the other books in this series, illustrations are quite bright and vibrant, eliciting thoughts of fun and happiness as we make a quick tour around Mexico. Learn about the celebrations and festivals with a quick stop to some ancient ruins and a quick taste of traditional Mexican foods. As always, you have vocabulary words in the country's language along with a pronunciation guide.

It's just a hint of all that Mexico has to offer and does feel a little stereotypical to me. But it still has its place among resources to use when exploring other countries.

Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tiny Travelers Mexico Treasure Quest was a hit with my girls. They seemed to really be engrossed with Mexico (or mexi-mo as they called it) Could see this being an aid in a classroom. Great cover, seemed like it stayed true to the culture and a real winner in our home

Tiny Travelers Mexico Treasure Quest is a bright picture book written for kids to take them on a journey through Mexico. This book would be excellent for our culture unit at school where we highlight different cultures and talk about what makes them unique and special. A great kids book filled with authentic language.

I you want an educational book on travel for younger people then look no further. Vibrant coloured pictures on scenes in Mexico. This books covers the heritage of the country. The food that they eat. The animals. Statues and festivals.
The scenes jump off the pages with wonderful facts. I especially love the Mexican words broken down in such a way that children can say them. For example Xochimilco would be So - chee -MIL - ko.
Highly recommended for younger readers

I received a complimentary review copy of #GoTinyTravelers Mexico from #NetGalley

This book has excellent illustrations that accurately represent the diversity of the country. Each page spread depicts an aspect of the culture and has a couple of sentences describing it, as well as a "quest" to find an item specific to the country, and a "did you know" fact. Many aspects of the country are illustrated: arts and culture, food, historical/museums, leisure, etc. At the very end of the book, there is a spread with a world map so readers can see where the country is relative to others. This is a great book to educate children about other places, inspire interest in new topics, and to build empathy.

This was a bright and colorful book about Mexico that would be a great introduction to the country. The short rhyming sentences made this a quick and enjoyable read, and I even learned a few things!

Tiny Travelers Mexico Treasure Quest by Steven Wolfe Pereira and Susie Jaramillo is the third book out of this series that I have read and I’m excited that there are more coming. This is a fun intro to Mexico. My fiancé is Mexican so this will be a fun way to start our littles on learning about his country. The sights they included are interesting and the illustrations are colorful and fun. The “find me” feature is cute and keeps it interesting for small children.

This would be the first gift to give to a child just before a trip to Mexico. It has so many different elements that can keep children entertained and also have them learning about a different culture. Love the phonetic words used to show how to pronounce the words as well as being able to keep entertained by searching what is hidden on each page. A nice short entertaining book that any aspiring Mexican traveller will enjoy.

Leaves you eager to travel and curious to learn more!!

Note: this review applies to each and every book in this series that I have read - tiny travelers - China, Mexico, Puerto Rico

My Thoughts
First things first: the art is bright, colorful, delightful, eye-catching and the rhyming text is fun to read out loud! You will enjoy reading the words in other languages with the provided phonetics as well as looking for the hidden items and for those that are not.

As you go through the pages, the text and the detailed illustrations work together to teach the young armchair traveler very many things. These include words from the language, an introduction to interesting places in the country, traditions and events, wildlife, people, food, and more. It is truly amazing how much you can learn within the few pages of these board books, while maintaining cultural authenticity and accuracy.

I love that it includes things that most people first think of when they hear the name of the country (like the Great Wall of China or San Juan or the mariachis) and then the other equally wonderful things that make up that nation (like Wuling Mountains or Xochimilco or the Arecibo Planetary Radar). Curious now, aren’t you?:)

The Layout
The first page has the map of the featured country along with a useful fact card containing capital, language, currency, and population statistics. The ‘this-book-belongs-to’ is replaced with a ‘boarding pass’ where the tiny traveler (armchair one, in this case) can write his or her name. I am sure this format makes it exciting for kids – travel through the pages, earn those stamps on your book (and you can get free stickers for each book to stick on relevant pages), and complete your travel.

Each two-page spread has a similar layout with similar symbols across pages for ease of use. Each one includes
-the name of the specific place depicted on the page,
-the what-you-need-to-seek in a ‘stamp’ that you can put the free appropriate sticker on when found,
-a ‘Did you know’ fact box about something on the page,
labels to highlight items depicted (could be food, animals, places, etc) that inform the reader, and of course
-the detailed art work with the rhyming text taking center-stage, or well, spread across the two pages.

The last couple of pages include a checklist to see if the reader found everything and ends with the world map highlighting the featured country.

Conclusion
It is tough to represent a country within the confines of a children’s board book and there will always be lots of things that might be missing but this series does a great job of presenting it perfectly for the intended audience in a fun, interesting, and enriching way!

So, yes, these books are a wonderful addition to any library. So, if you have a child who enjoys learning about new places, or the search-and-find activities, or even if not, these books are going to be well-worth it.

They left me curious to learn more about everything mentioned, eager to travel and explore, and yes, hungry!
