this really had me on the edge of my seat, I really felt for Jo and the other characters. I look forward to more from the author.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley.

Johnathan is a 21 year college student at White Haven. He's socially awkward.... and is just trying to get by. His whole world changes one night when a night of college rioting turns incredibly dark. It appears the entire campus or even world has gone crazy and turned into angry killers. Those who haven't died fall into a deep sleep during the day and continue the "reign of terror" at night. Having no way to contact his family, he sets off to find out their fate. Will he survive? What happens?!

The ending is a left open, which is my only complaint nabout the book in general.

Review for 'When the sky goes dark' by Oliver C. Seneca
Read and reviewed via NetGalley

STORYLINE

Whether it’s to finish college or muster up the courage to talk to the cute girl in his class, Jonathan Barnes wants nothing more than to make something of himself. To be a man and make it on his own. That is, if his constantly questioning and racing mind lets him.

After a sudden, bloodied brawl on campus that leaves over half of White Haven College dead, Jon finds himself thrust into a world turned completely upside down by violence. The news is overwhelmed with reports of rioting across the country, plane crashes, and countless innocent lives lost. They say it is going global.

With no explanation as to the cause of the nationwide catastrophes and a cryptic phone message from his parents, Jon has no choice but to traverse into the horror to find his loved ones. His family may be dead or worse, turned into rage-filled maniacs that pay no mercy to anyone or anything when night falls.

Nothing is certain except for one thing: Jon wants to be inside when the sky goes dark.

REVIEW

It was hard to decide what star rating to give this book as my star ratings are
🌟 Could not finish
🌟 🌟 Did not like
🌟 🌟 🌟 It was OK
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 I liked it
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 I loved it

I rated this book 3 stars because some parts I liked and some I didn't. I shall explain. I found the book quite an easy and quick read. However, I disliked the main character and found that the other characters were not 'formed' if that makes sense. There was only 2 characters that I actually found likeable. The rest just didn't seem realistic.

I found it quite annoying that at several points in the book the author gives away things. For example 'they should have taken the exit' and 'it won't be the last time he used the gun'. They are not the exact quotes but hopefully you get my meaning.

The storyline itself was quite interesting which is why I chose to review the book but its a shame it wasnt as good as I hoped as it definitely had potential.

As I said previously it was an easy read and it wasn't that bad that I didn't finish it but there was no real suspense for me. The ending was also very disappointing and left alot to be desired.

Overall if you are looking for a easy and quite quick read then by all mesns give it a go, everyone has different views and you may enjoy it, it just wasn't for me. I would also say this is more a book for young adults and teens.

Rated 2.5 but 3 on Amazon and Goodreads.

This is an upgraded 3.5. Oliver Seneca is a young author, who shows some promise in writing suspense type stories. This story follows, Jonathan Barnes, a 21 year old college student at White Haven College in Pennsylvania. Socially awkward, Jonathan is mostly content to stick to his studies and live part time in his fantasies about other female college students who are way out of his league. His world is flipped upside down when one night of college rioting quickly proves to be to be not so innocent. Jonathan wakes to a world turned upside down as the entire population of the world seems to have gone mad with people everywhere flipping into angry, killing machines. Those that aren’t killed fall into a deep sleep during the day, and reawaken at night to continue with their reign of terror. Compelled to find out the fate of his family members, Jonathan vows to return home against all costs. This is a thrill ride that is engaging. The open ended ending does leave something to be desired. Overall, story is worth a read. Thank you to Netgalley for the early copy. This review is posted to Goodreads, and Amazon

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the EARC. Captivating and Intensely gripping. But a slow burn.

I love a good dystopian book. Especially where everything starts off normally, and then weird things start to happen and then the world goes to heck in a handbasket. Good plot, enjoyed this book. I do think it needs some editing. Some things the characters said did not make sense and kind of interrupted the flow of the book. Besides that, great book!

Difficult to finish

I had a difficult time finishing this book. It could have been a good book. I liked the idea behind the storyline. But the book was so awkwardly written. Odd phrasing, negative stereotypes. Sometimes I felt that either a very young person was writing the book or a much older person. Weird contradictions.

I mean, for example, when was the last time you heard a 21 year old say they were glad 'to wet their whistle'? I'm 64 years old and I haven't heard that term in years.

I did like the character portrayals, for the most part. That and the idea behind the storyline are why I'm rating this two stars rather than one and also why I finished the book rather than ditching it after the first few chapters.

I would recommend that the author get a much better editor if he decides to continue writing - someone to draw all the pieces into a cohesive document.

At this point I can't recommend this book.

I received this book from Hellbender Books through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

For receiving this e-book from NetGalley, I offer my honest review of When the Sky Goes Dark by Oliver C. Seneca. #WhenTheSkyGoesDark
College student Jonathan Barnes, a.k.a. Jon or Little Jon, is a regular young adult attending college in Pennsylvania, when out of the blue, violence escalates to deadly proportion. Jon has no idea what is happening, other than he is in danger and needs to find some place safe and find it quickly.
Once Jon is somewhat safe, holed up with other college students, he starts to question what is happening to other classmates and authority. He also knows, he needs to get home and check on his family.
Along the course of Jon’s story, he encounters horrific violent deaths, survives attempted murder, and meets people that help him understand this changing world.
This is a well-paced apocalypse book. The originality of the story was a nice change for this genre. I got the chills when Jon discovered the cause of this outbreak. And of course, like many readers of this book, when you find out and you go to take a drink of water, you have been warned.
