The eighth book in the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series by Laurie Cass is Gone with the Whisker. It is the Fourth of July in Michigan. Minnie and her cat, Eddie, are supposed to be enjoying a summer with Minnie's niece, Katrina. Minnie is having a hard time relating to Katrina. Things go from bad to worse when Katrina stumbles over a body at the town's fireworks. Minnie is determined to find the killer and salvage Katrina's summer. This book can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the setting and Eddie the cat. Katrina's foul attitude put a bit of a damper on the book for me, but it is a nice summer themed read.

The Bookmobile Cat Mystery series was one of my early introductions into the cozy mystery genre. What luck!

The main character Minnie is so relatable. What book lover wouldn't like her? She is a single female librarian who drives the bookmobile, takes her sidekick cat Eddie almost everywhere she goes, is in a fun relationship with her boyfriend Rafe and has interesting family members and friends. Oh yes - she also solves murder mysteries.

And then there is Eddie. He has quite the typical attitude. (Ok, I almost said cattitude but decide against it.) As a cat lover I find the interactions between Minnie and Eddie to be very entertaining.

Sometimes by book #8, a series can start to become a bit staid. Not the case with this one. There is enough change going on in Minnie's life to make each book enjoyable. The murder mystery solving is always a challenge and I have yet to figure out the "who done it" before the end of the story.

Gone With The Whisker: A Bookmobile Cat Mystery

Review by Cynthia Chow

Normally, the Fourth of July is librarian Minnie Hamilton’s favorite time of the year. Not only is it her birthday, but Chilson, Michigan celebrates with parades, fireworks, and of course outdoor barbeques. This year is a little less sunny though, with her Chilson District Library hotly debating how to use their new grant money and Minnie’s teenaged niece in town ostensibly to work for the summer. The moody seventeen-year-old is almost as mercurial as Minnie’s Aunt Frances, who is finding retirement and being a newlywed to be less blissful than expected. Only Bookmobile Cat Eddie is behaving as expected, not only continuing as the traveling library’s star attraction but once again leading his humans to a dead body.

Devastated that her niece had the traumatic experience of finding the corpse of bookmobile patron Rex Stuhler, Minnie is guilted into tracking down the killer in order to give the teen closure. Kate – not Katrina, please – was moody and snappy before they discovered the gunned down pest exterminator, and now she is livid that Minnie seems to be disregarding theories of jealous spouses and hitmen-for-hire. Pluckily determined to be the best aunt possible, Minnie nags the detectives into pursuing her own leads of marijuana farms, property disputes, and broken alibis. It barely gives her time to alleviate her aunt’s worries that the boarding house she gave over to Cousin Clarissa isn’t keeping up the traditions of matchmaking and DIY breakfasts, help boyfriend Rafe Niswander with their home renovations, and undercover the secrets of how to handle temperamental teenagers.

Assistant Director Librarian and Bookmobile Librarian Minerva Joy Hamilton continues to be the delightful and charming lead of this series celebrating joys of library services. The patrons she and Eddie meet on their scheduled runs not only connect them to the Lower Michigan community, they give Minnie the clues she needs to solve the mysteries she somehow keeps falling into. Six years of living in her aunt’s hometown have Minnie adopting the traditional us vs. tourists mentality, complicated by their dependence on visitors for their economy. Minnie and her friends continue to be the draw of this very funny and heartwarming series, with the characters continually to evolve and becoming central to the storylines. Eddie is of course the star here as well, not only accidentally providing clues but perhaps inadvertently coming to the rescue in a hilarious-but-suspenseful conclusion. Books, family, romance, and of course a library cat make this a winning series for mystery readers and fans of these cozy adventures.

Fun cozy mystery set in Northern Michigan with a bookmobile librarian and her cat! What is not to love. I have read another of Minnie's adventures and love that you can read these out of order and enjoy the story line.

There are many good cozy mystery series with cats, but only a few have captured my heart as Eddie has. This fabulous cozy is catnip for fans of cat-and-book-themed mysteries. I love the characters more with each new mystery. The setting of northwest lower Michigan in summer is wonderful, and this mystery is confounding and dangerous! It can be read as a standalone, and even more fun as part of the series.

Eddie is the popular bookmobile cat, best known for being Minnie’s best feline buddy. Eddie has one word, Mrr, varied primarily by tone and volume. They are almost inseparable, as Eddie is expert at getting into and out of things to get his way. He was on the maiden voyage of the bookmobile after slipping out of the small houseboat Minnie lives on and to the library. He gave her no choice but to take him along. Just once. The next time Minnie was at a certain stop, a tiny girl with leukemia wanted to know where the kitty was and insisted that Minnie bring him along again. Eddie became one of the library’s best kept secrets. Eddie has also been her companion in finding killers.

Minnie has finally discovered that Rafe, now a middle school principal, who she met when visiting Aunt Frances 20 years ago, is the love of her life. They are an adorable couple, and even Eddie tolerates him. When Minnie’s brother and sister-in-law send her 17-year-old niece to stay with her for the summer, Minnie hopes that she and Kate will grow as close as she and her aunt Frances have over the years. She wasn’t prepared for the mumbles and hostility of a teen missing her friends and seeking a summer job in a strange town.

Rafe, Minnie, and Kate went to the fireworks display on the Fourth. Afterwards, as they head back toward the houseboat, they talk about how Kate is starting a new job in the morning. Kate suddenly screamed. She has almost fallen over a dead body next to the lake. Minnie knew the man. Rex was one of her library bookmobile patrons, and he had been shot.

When they talk about the nightmares she is having, Minnie tells her that she has found someone dead in the past (an understatement, having found more than one). Kate is impressed that Minnie helped find out who the killer was and begs Minnie to help find the bad guy so she can sleep again. Determined to help her, Minnie agrees, despite having almost lost her life when “investigating” in the past.

Minnie’s friends and her co-workers at the library are used to her unusual questions; Minnie is a problem solver and will get to the bottom of any challenge. She and her bookmobile assistant, Julia, are saddened by Rex’s senseless murder and try to find a starting place to find the bad guy. Minnie and Rafe’s friend Ash is a deputy, studying to become a detective in the local sheriff’s office. Over the past couple years, he and Hal, an older detective, have learned to listen to what Minnie hears and observes while not encouraging her to get involved.

A few days later, Minnie and Julia are out on the bookmobile when Eddie throws a kitty fit. Minnie opened the door; Eddie dashed out and led them on a chase to where he found the body of Nicole, another bookmobile patron. Initially it was thought she drowned, but the autopsy showed she was murdered. The stakes increased, along with Kate’s nightmares, and an attempt is made on Minnie’s life.

I feel as if I know the delightful characters well, yet I learn more about them in each mystery. Minnie is a young woman with a big heart, intelligence, and the drive to find the truth. She is still willing to learn from Aunt Frances, especially when it comes to improving her relationship with Kate. Eddie is an adorable, opinionated boy who is fiercely loyal to the human who feeds him – as long as he gets to ride on the bookmobile! I also like Aunt Frances, who is adjusting to no longer running the boarding house across the street from her and her husband’s home.

This mystery, at first, seemed to have no easy solution. A bit of investigation opened a couple possibilities for Rex’s killer, but Nicole’s death changed everything. I enjoyed both Minnie’s daily life with Kate and Rafe, as well as the three of them putting ideas together of who the killer was. While I had an idea who was involved, I had no clue how or why. I was quite surprised at the root of the situation and the full resolution! The end includes several surprises and all loose ends are tied up; I highly recommend this best-in-series!

Gone with the Whisker is another excellent installment in Cass's Bookmobile Cat cozy mystery series. This series is still one of my favorites, and this latest installment definitely did not disappoint. Minnie finds herself having a house guest for the summer when her niece, Katrina, comes to stay with her. Things are a little rough as Minnie has to become more of a parent to her niece rather than the fun aunt, but Minnie is sure that she can handle it. She was a teenager once too. Things go wrong though when her niece discovers a body, and Minnie is determined to solve this case to make her niece feel safer.

Cass does a great job at setting up the personal conflict between Minnie and her niece. This family conflict makes this mystery even more important for Minnie to solve. It also shows readers a different side of Minnie as she tries to work through this new type of relationship with her niece. The book's mystery is also well done keeping the reader guessing until the end. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages to see what would happen next. Overall Gone with the Whisker proved to be an entertaining read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Minnie's next adventure.

Received a copy of Gone with the Whisker through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Laurie Cass immerses Eddie the bookmobile cat and his mistress bookmobile librarian Minnie in two murders: at the same time Minnie's niece is in town for the summer. Whodunit? Good reads and good friends cooperate to provide a superior cozy. Minnie is a true librarian and small town Michigan comes across as authentic. Enjoy.

I have been reading the Bookmobile Cat Mystery series with a huge smile on my face ever since the first book came out in 2013. I'm not sure if it's the library bookmobile theme, the characters, or Eddie the Cat that makes these books some of my favorite cozy mysteries...most likely it's a combination of them all.

Gone With the Whisker is the 8th book in this series. It's summertime in Chilton, MI and Librarian Minnie Hamilton is busy! Not only is it the start of tourist season, but she's also dealing with lots of changes in her life -- her boyfriend's house renovation project, someone else running her aunt's boarding house, and her teenage niece has come to stay with her for the summer. Minnie isn't about to let anything ruin her summer.....not even a dead body. Yep. Another one. Soon Minnie, her niece and the usual cast of characters (even Eddie!) are all on the trail of a killer.....

As usual, this was a fun visit to Chilton! The mystery plot was entertaining....and there are plenty of suspects and sleuthing. I got a bit tired of Kate's constant angst....but by the end of the book, the character had grown on me. Eddie is his usual self. Another entertaining read in this series! The cover art is awesome as usual!

I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series! It took my mind off being cooped up in the house for Easter weekend this year....

**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. Mrrr!**

Loved this book, especially that the series is set in Michigan, since I grew up on Lake Michigan.
The dialogue draws you right in from the start, and although I did receive an ARC from Berkeley and Netgalley, I did buy my own copy for my library. Definitely recommend this warm cozy.

Another fun outing with librarian and bookmobile driver Minerva Hamilton. Minnie lives in the Michigan resort town of Chilson. Minnie is an appealing character - honest and funny. The supporting cast of characters works well, starting with Minnie's Aunt Frances and including Rafe, Minnie's boyfriend and her library co-workers. And of course, Eddie, her endearingly naughty bookmobile cat.

Chilson is full of tourists as the Fourth of July approaches. Minnie's niece Kate is staying with her for the summer and Minnie is unused to the drama and volatility of a teenager's moods. Everyone else raves about Kate but every time Minnie opens her mouth Kate gets offended. Meanwhile Rafe is working double time to complete renovations on the house so Minnie can move in.

Minnie and Kate have the misfortune to discover a dead body and even worse, Minnie recognizes the victim as a bookmobile patron. It doesn't take long before the ever curious Minnie and Kate are working to help the police discover the murderer. Especially when another body turns up.

This is a fun series to follow with characters that you don't mind spending time with. It's fun to have read the entire series and gotten to know everyone's history, but I think this would work fine as a standalone. Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Gone with the Whisker by Laurie Cass is the 8th A Bookmobile Cat Mystery. It can be read as a standalone if you have not read the prior books in the series or skipped a book or two. Gone with the Whisker contains good writing with friendly characters in a charming small town. Minnie Hamilton is happy to have her niece, Katrina—aka Kate—visiting for the summer. She did not count on the teenage attitude nor Kate’s addiction to her phone. Minnie is busy driving her bookmobile providing books and other materials to those who cannot make it to the library in town. After enjoying a day celebrating the Fourth of July and her birthday, Minnie and her family are heading home. Kate suddenly trips and then lets out a screech. She stumbled upon bookmobile patron, Rex Stuhler who dead from a gunshot. Minnie and her sidekick, Eddie begin delving into the case and providing helpful information to Detectives Wolverson and Inwood. When a second bookmobile patron ends up dead, Minnie believes the cases are connected. She needs to prove it and then find the killer so her niece will stop having nightmares. Minnie comes up with several suspects and a variety of theories with the help of her niece, Kate. I thought the mystery suited the town and relates to an ongoing problem in our country. The whodunit can be solved before the tense conclusion (earlier if you are an avid reader of the genre). I loved Eddie’s part in aiding Minnie. It is cute how Minnie talks to Eddie and he responds with his adorable “mrr”. Anyone who has cats can relate. It is a good thing Eddie is around when Minnie needs him. There are enjoyable cozy moments in the story as Minnie spends time with her family and friends. The ending of Gone with the Whisker is special and will leave you smiling. I am curious when Rafe will finish the house and who will end up winning the pool. I believe everyone in town has placed a bet on the finish date. Gone with the Whisker is a lighthearted cozy mystery with a fun feline, bundles of books, fabulous fireworks, tasty treats, a bustling bookmobile, and continuous construction.

I love Eddie the Bookmobile Cat! Minnie's niece Katie comes north to spend the summer, taking on three jobs. Rafe, Katie's boyfriend, works on the home he's preparing for them. In the meantime, Minnie lives on the houseboat. After Katie stumbles over the corpse of a bookmobile patron, Minnie promises to help catch the man's murderer. Eddie helps locate a second corpse later. He plays additional roles later. It's a fun read for mystery lovers who are cat lovers. I caught a couple of typos in the advance review copy that I hope an editor corrects in the final version. I received the advance review copy through NetGalley with the expectation of an honest review. (3.5 stars)

Another visit to Chilson to see Minnie, Eddie, and the Bookmobile community. This time, an extended visit from Minnie's niece Katrina (Kate, please!) adds new levels of interpersonal conflict. Between trying to be a good aunt to a recalcitrant young adult plus keep the peace between her own two aunts, Minnie finds time to solve two puzzling murders. A great escape read, which I especially appreciated during these chaotic times!

Minnie's niece, Katrina, is spending the summer with her in Chilson, which is an adjustment for both of them. During the fireworks display, however, Katrina stumbles over a body, which turns out to be one of Minnie's bookmobile patrons. To help Katrina try to put the situation behind her, Minnie decides to conduct her own investigation.

This is book #8 of the Bookmobile Cat series, which I have truly enjoyed, perhaps because it takes me back to the days when the only way I could borrow library books was to ride my bike to the nearest bookmobile stop. I wish bookmobiles were as common today as they were back in the day! The recurring characters are a group of people I would enjoy spending time with, and it has been fun their relationships grow and change over the course of the series. Of course, I love Minnie's interactions and talks with Eddie as well :)

The mystery is a good one, with lots of suspects with logical motives, but as the book continued, I was able to narrow that list down, a person or two at a time. I figured out the motive and the culprit just a few steps ahead of Minnie, and I'm glad that Eddie always finds a way to help Minnie. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Gone With The Whisker is the 8th book in the charming cozy series " Bookmobile Cat Mystery Series". I have read the entire series and always look forward to returning to this delightful series created by cozy author Laurie Cass. The series is pure "catnip" for cat lovers with adorable Eddie as a important part of each book in the series. Thank you to the publisher Berkeley and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinions are my own.

This book can be read as a stand alone for readers new to the series. I do highly recommend the entire series for your reading enjoyment.

In this next in series our savvy protagonist Minnie and her trusty sidekick cat Eddie are enjoying the summer and busy with the bookmobile reaching out to residents that are isolated throughout their city of Chilson, Michigan, Minnie and Eddie are well loved and appreciated by the rural community. The bookmobile is popular and Minnie is well respected in her community for navigating the city council and library board to make her bookmobile available for everyone. Minnie is a favorite protagonist of mine and someone we all want to be friends with.

The town Fourth of July festivities are in full force and Minnie is looking forward to showing her visiting niece Katrina all the fun that her city has to offer including a fireworks's show. The fireworks take a dark turn when her niece finds a dead body who is one of Minnie's regulars on the bookmobile . Minnie has proven to be a skilled investigator on previous murders and she does not hesitate to take on investigating this murder as she feels close to the victim.

Soon clues abound with Minnie on the case and suspects are on her radar that may put her in danger. The author has crafted another well done mystery with plenty of red herrings to keep even the most avid mystery reader guessing to conclusion. The charcters are always a delight. This series is always enjoyable and one I highly recommend. I cannot wait for the next in series and further adventures of our Minnie and Eddie. Review cross posted at publication date.

I love this book! Minnie and Eddie are my 2 favorite characters, they always bring a smile to my face.
As Minnie guides the bookmobile through town, down long, winding dirt roads, she wonders which library patrons will be waiting at the designated stop.
Accompanying Minnie is her cat pal Eddie, who delights readers of all ages.
When two library patrons meet an untimely death, Minnie finds herself wrapped up in another investigation, much to her dismay.
Minnie doesn’t mind looking for clues or asking questions, she just hates coming face to face with a killer.

I really loved this book and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next with Minnie, Rafe, and Eddie.
