Touting itself as a historical fiction laced with magic, I’m intrigued. I feel like we rarely get historical fiction about the witch trials, which is a shame, because what happened to women during that time period should not be swept under the rug or ignored. The patriarchy was built on the backs of women burning alive while tied to stakes, so... yeah. Crazy how much it’s ignored.

This simply wasn't for me and it's a shame because I badly wanted it to be.
It's slow, a slog almost and the plot isn't particularly engaging. The writing is beautiful but it's just not engaging.

Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC.

I was not able to complete this book. It just could not hold my attention. Found it very boring. While I liked the magical aspects of it, as I do particularly like witchy things, there was just something about this book that did not work for me.

Witches and magic are things that I love to read about! I was so excited to get this book, and I wasn't let down at all! It was beautifully written with an exciting story. I think it was a little wordy for my taste, but it was still a solid story that I would recommend to anyone that loves books about witches!

I was provided an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Two magical families that have century long power struggle. One young witch, Annis who is torn between love & loyalty,. This book is everything you’d expect in a witchy novel + a heroine centred story. Its got everything romance, magic, mayhem and action. The determination of the three women needs to be highlighted. Some parts moved slow for me but I’m glad this book got me out of the reading slump!
4/5
Thank you Netgalley, Redhook books and Louisa Morgan for the ARC. This review is my own and is not influenced in anyway!

I gave feedback on this title quite some time ago. It suddenly reappeared on my shelf after the addition of audiobooks. I contacted Netgalley a week ago and have heard nothing back so am getting these off my shelf this way.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader copy of Louisa Morgan’s “ The Age of Witches”. This book while normally out of my comfort zone with its historical bent, was an easy to read pleasure. It had a clear magic system, and spoke on issues regarding women and power without shoving it down your throat. That plus the setting of the Salem witch trials made this read highly enjoyable and a book I would recommend!

What an epic story!!!!!! What can I say about this story? The characters are amazing! Dynamic. Realistic. And relatable. The plot was absolutely amazing! My attention was held the entire time. Twists. Turns. Suspense. I love the entire story!!!! I was sad when I finished.

The Age of Witches is a book I put down shortly after reading 20%, not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because I wasn't completely invested in the story. However, I already could see it had promise but I tend to put down books easily and get back to it later on. As soon as I started reading it again, the romance aspect of this book was introduced and I was hooked! I loved the story and the romance kept me interested. Overall, I'm so glad I finished it. My only regret is to be late since I read an ARC and The Age of Witches was published three months ago.

In this book, we follow four perspectives : Harriet, Annis, James and Frances.

Harriet is an herbalist and a witch who helps people (rich and poor) with her remedies and magic. She lost her husband during the War. Even if she has to be discreet with her powers, she still manages to do good around her.

Annis is related to Harriet even though she doesn't know it at the beginning of the book. She's a seventeen year old girl who wants to breed her horse to start a new bloodline. Unfortunately, being a female breeder isn't something that is being done at the time. Men would react badly and would be shocked that a woman would know how reproduction happens... Annis seem to shock people without even trying and James was no exception. At first, he was a bit old-fashioned and "prude" as his mother liked to call him once, and he and Annis didn't start on the best of terms.

Frances is Annis' stepmother and also a witch. She decides to use her magic not to do good but for her own selfish reasons to obtain more power. After she bewitched Annis' father, she decides that it's time for Annis to get a husband and a title. Turns out, James and his mother have financial problems after the death of James' father and a wedding would give them just the solution... Frances will not stop until this marriage is done, even if it means controlling James and Annis against their will...

Aaaand, that's all I'm going to say. I feel like I've already said a lot but honestly, if you're looking for a story about witches and with a romance inside it, then this book might be for you.

I was so excited to check this one out but sadly it just wasn't for me at all. I found that the characters were very cliche and the story was pretty lack luster. It was the same old same old but with witches and for this reader it just didn't work out. I lost interest a lot of the time and finally just decided to put it down.

This is the 2nd book about witches by this author I've read. It is set in New York City during the 1890's where women didn't have a lot of rights. Harriett Bishop must stop another witch who is channeling dangerous power. Frances has used her power to escape poverty and in an effort to secure her future is casting a love spell for her stepdaughter Annis. Harriett must help Annis find her own power and resist the powerful allure of Frances' magic. I think I would have enjoyed this story a little more if it had been set in modern day, I'm not a big fan of historical fiction. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Lousia Morgan is a wonderful new voice in the book world. I think so far I have liked this one the most. It continues with the Bishop line and how the descendants are different. Some work i. the light some work in the dark. I loved the herbalism included in this one. Harriet Bishop is a healer and herbalist. But not all members of the family are inclined to think of others. The strife between the family members keeps this story going. You wont be disappointed.!!

I wish I didn't have to write this but I did not finish this one.

I tried. I really did. I so enjoyed Louisa Morgan's other books but this one just fell flat for me.

I am definitely a mood reader so I don't know if I just wasn't in the right mood for this one?

I will try to go back and read this one at a later date.

*THANK YOU to Redhook Books and Netgalley for graciously providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review*

It's my first book from Louisa Morgan and i can say i was pleasantly surprised.
Very enthralling story of witches ,practicing various types of magic - some wisely, others for their own benefit. The book takes place in 1890 and give us the main character Annis - a witch with a forte as herbalist and a main belief for helping people.
Unknowingly she is mixed up in the middle of a secret war in witch ideologies - that of her great aunt Harriet Bishop and her belief that their powers should be used ethically and those of her stepmother Frances Allington and her preference to black magic.
Absolutely love the detail of her storytelling and the historical component, although the theme "bad magic" versus "good magic" sound like a cliche the end result is fresh and will definitely read the author's other books.

DNF at 30%

This was boring to me. Lots of meandering description and I'm not invested enough to continue. It's a shame because I really liked the premise.

While the writing is beautiful, The Age of Witches didn't "speak" to me. I didn't connect to any of the characters, so stopped reading about three chapters in. I'll give it a three star because while it's not for me, it's not poorly written or anything.

A variation on the Cinderella theme, this time with horses and herbal witchcraft and Gilded Age America and England. We meet two strong women, Harriet and Annis, distantly related and separated by a few decades; Harriet has made her way as a single woman, occasionally treating medical problems that might be too delicate to take to your doctor, and Annis, a young woman who cares only for her horses. And then there's the Evil Stepmother, Frances, wanting Annis to follow in the footprints of Jennie Churchill, or Cora, Lady Grantham of Downton Abbey. The historical part was far more interesting than the witchcraft part, which required pages of explanation in some parts and got glosses over in others.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for my free copy, unfortunately this book isn't for me. While it had very intriguing concept that includes history of generation of witches, it didn't keep my interest for long because of the pace.It is painfully slow for my liking which made it hard to connect with the characters or keep me moving forward with the plot, it had great potential to become a satisfying standalone if it isn't very slow paced.
I would give it 2.5 stars

Thank you to the publisher and author for providing me with a digital ARC of this title via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I love a good witchy book and this title did not disappoint. I enjoyed the characters and how their stories wove together. I thought this was well written and enjoyable to read. I liked that magic had a good and a dark side and watching how the use of both affected the witch and those influenced by the magic. I would happily read more by this author and was grateful for the opportunity to read this title.
